Senri's my favorite drummer on the planet right now. Absolutely world class skills AND unfailingly musical at the same time. Versatile, too... The bassist is Armand Sabal-Lecco, from Cameroon...and he's incredible, isn't he?

Senri has toured the world multiple times, and top musicians line up to play with her. You can see why. The best part is her total joy when playing.

Senri Kawaguchi is the No.1 female technical drummer in the world that I know.

She is my favourite as well, but an other one to check out if you haven't already is Kanade Sato. But I guess seeing your name, you are probably more familiar with a lot of great female drummers in Japan than I am. Senri is one of the people that got me more into jazz and had me discover a lot of other talent because of all the collaborations (I can call out Juna Serita for that as well with all her colaborations).

Senri is already a legend. A prodigy virtuoso. Here's a concept: Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee grab Senri, and start RUSH back up again. Because THIS performance has Neil Peart written all over it! Could you just imagine Senri in RUSH? 🤯

Hi from France: Senri, known under the pseudonym tekazuhime (手数姫), ("Princess of Many Strokes"), was barely 20 years old when this concert was recorded. The musicians (Philippe Saisse [k] and Armand Sabal-Lecco [b]) are known in the French jazz fusion scene, but also in New York during the 80s and 90s...

Recorded at Motion Blue, Yokohama, with ongoing collaborators Philippe Saisse and Armand Sabal-Lecco. This won the 2017 Jazz Japan Award for best live performance. I hear echoes of the great fusion groups of the 70’s and 80’s. I find Sabal-Lecco’s bass leads are reminiscent of Stanley Clarke.

Senri Kawaguchi. She has an ensemble composed of the top young female jazz musicians in Japan (check out tenor Miku Yonezawa, CLAPPS Abyss). They have been playing together for just over a year. Each musician also fronts their own group. Kawaguchi is the house drummer for the Blue Note Tokyo All Star Jazz Orchestra, which is led by Eric Miyashiro - Miho Terachi also plays with BNTASJO. But, here they are, live, The Jazz Avengers: Maybe I Know: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q0bo1_2tkt4.html Here are Kawaguchi and Yonezawa, at CLAPPS, performing Abyss: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p93pzxr_JRE.html The keyboardist on Wupatki, is Philippe Saisse: he was the house keyboarist for Nite Music, a television show in 1988-89 hosted by David Sanborn. The bassist: Armand Sabal-Lecco, played with the Brecker Brothers, Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Stanley Clark, Manu Dibango, Sting, Ray Charles. I live in Japan and have seen Kawauchi perform numerous times. She plays with various ensembles. However, I saw the Jazz Avengers recently and they burned the house down. Fantastic.

The keyboard player is Philippe Saisse from France and the bassist is Armand Sabal-Lecco from Cameroon. I don't know them well enough to give you a lot more info unfortunately. The 3 of them played on Senri's solo album "Cider Hard & Sweet" and it includes this track. Philippe Saisse actually wrote a bunch of the music on that album, but this track was written by Jun Abe, who has worked a lot with Senri over the years on her albums. Generally she uses Japanese jazz musicians, but I think it worked really well on this album, it's actually my favourite from her solo albums. Also, this whole set/concert is amazing.

The trio toured off the "Cider" album and the "Triangle" album is a recording of the Sept. 5 (2017) stop of that tour-that's why the songs of the two albums are the same. I saw them on Sept. 8.

Aloha, Been a fan of Senri for a while got a chance to meet her last month while I spent a week in Kobe. Just for us English speaking fans. Her name is spelled Senri but in Japanese they don't pronounce the "r" like we do. They pronounce it as a "d". Her name is pronounced as Sendi not Senri. Just giving her the respect that she deserves! Aloha!

Senri is special, although I do like it when she goes more towards rock music. Whenever she is on the stage, she owns it, regardless of who she is sharing the stage with. Check her out in some of her other bands. One is a group called The Jazz Avengers performing a Jazz/Funk fusion called Hunter, which is simply amazing. Then check her out performing with another legend, RIE aka Suzuka doing a Jeff Beck Cover called Blue WInd, or an original song called Breaking the Limit.

I've been following Senri Kawaguchi for more than a decade and consider her to be one of the best drummers in the world. In fact, I found Band-Maid through Senri. My list goes something like this: Senri the best all-round drummer - she stands out in any format or music. (Akane the best hard rock drummer); Band-Maid is the best Hard Rock band; The Warning the best original, trio rock band; Hiromi Uehara the best jazz fusion pianist; Yuja Wang the best classical pianist; and Tatiana Smailyuk from Jinjer the best Metal vocalist -- amazingly, all women! Here's a 1-minute, drum-thunder by Senri Kawaguchi: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uZMdWEQ5IG8.html&lc= Quaratuned Music Fest: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jO8VlSqw7do.html Triangle Live: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nrHJoY6RzR0.html There are many newer Senri videos we can also choose from. Thanks Joel, for covering her on your great show!

That reminds me that I wanted to check out Hiromi Uehara. I am getting more info jazz mainly because of Senri and the people she plays with and I also discovered her before I discovered the rock scene and most of the metal scene in Japan, but I never really dove deeper into the scene than Senri Kawaguchi and Kanade Sato until pretty recently. I started checking out streamed shows during the pandemic and also checked out shows by Senri and Juna Serita and the people they played with and by just getting solo albums by almost all the members of the Jazz Avengers. I am generally not the biggest piano fan necessarily, but recently Juna Serita played with a jazz pianist I enjoyed a lot (I believe her name was Anna Matsuoka) and I know that I had seen Hiromi Uehara's name floating around a lot before as well. Any recommendations on where to start for her?

The trio albums Hiromi has done with Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips, such as "Move", are very good, but my favorite album is "Duet", with Chick Corea-twin concert pianos, inspired by Corea's performances with Herbie Hancock. "Duet" was recorded over three days at Blue Note in Tokyo in Sept. 2007. I saw them at Budokan the following April. It was sublime. Corea was very popular among Japanese musicians of various genres-Kanami of Band-Maid wrote a nice tribute to him at his passing.

Just loved, loved, loved this performance. Armand's bass was fantastic and Senri's drumming was just superlative. She would have only been 20 here and not even really full time as she was still studing at Waseda University.

Don't know about "part time group". Certainly the band members have other projects, but they've released an album and toured Japan off it, just as, say, Band-Maid, Nemophila, and Lovebites have. Saw a couple of those shows. They just finished a club gig and are lined up for a jazz fest. A sub-unit of the band has a gig upcoming, which I'll see. Guess it depends on how one distinguishes "part time" from "full time". Anyhow great band.
