I review & discuss Emily Brontë's classic book "Wuthering Heights", first published in 1847. As mentioned in the video, I struggled at first with this piece but once I got used to the devices of storytelling, it became a poignant experience that will certainly stay with me. What did you think of the book?
Initially published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, the plot concerns two families of the landed gentry living on the West Yorkshire moors, the Earnshaws and the Lintons, and their turbulent relationships with Earnshaw's adopted son, Heathcliff.

Wuthering Heights wonderfully portrays the darkest and deepest desperations of human nature primarily through immense obsession and unhealthy attachments.

My favorite book ever. In my opinion, the film with Ralph Fiennes as Heathcliff is the best version. I love when you say that in a way Wuthering Heights is the only book that Emily Brontë needed to write. I’ve thought that often in the many times I’ve read this book. There’s a reason I always come back to it (I’m reading it again now). It’s simply a masterpiece. Great review & analysis!

Yes yes. I understand that feeling between Heathcliff and Kathy. Unhealthy but often unavoidable

I recently read it and hated it. Why? Two main reasons. (1) Characterization inconsistency:There are characters in this novel who behave gently, kindly, and selflessly and times, and then somehow easily do an about-face and behave condescendingly and ruthlessly, like they're possessed by evil spirits. That felt unrealistic to me, and shocking beyond comprehension. I ended up not wanting to care about any of them. (2) Convoluted plot: I couldn't keep up with the storyline shifts and transitions, and the generational shift in the middle of the novel that rendered the main characters in the first half inconsequential, in order to focus on the younger characters? Crazy. I felt like I was reading two novels. Actually, two melodramatic, hyperbolic soap operas. The only reasonably consistent character is Nelly Dean; but even she had moments of inconsistency that seemed out of character. Honestly, I reached the point where I wasn't rooting for anyone, and it made no difference to me who ended up dying in the end.

I think Timothy Dalton was the best heathcliff and then Ralph Feines. By a hair they were both good!

There’s a 2-part BBC production of Wuthering Heights from 1978 that is extremely faithful to the book (including the second generation). You can watch it in full, in two parts, on RU-vid.

Just started reading it. I have to read each chapter twice to understand the story, first read it with audiobook, and then read the second time without the audio. So far it doesn’t bother me to read it twice in a row because the writing is convincing. I thought I don’t get it the first time because I’m not native in English. Hearing even you had a difficult time made me feel I can continue reading! Thank you!

Just finished reading and it was a powerful, unforgettable story. Definitely re-readable. I found myself tearing when Cathy and Hareton forgiving each other towards the end. And how beautiful is that to give books and education importance in seeing love and humanity! Thank you for your videos!

Great review. Many thanks 😀 I like the spoilers as it will be a long time before (if ever) I get around to it. Now I head over to Gareth to get his probably more cynical and darker take on the piece. Have a good weekend!

you have catherine and (her daughter) catherine, you have Linton (as a firstname), but his mothers and uncles last name is also linton. You have Hareton Earnshaw and his father and his grandfather who are all sometimes refered to as mr Earnshaw. That didn't make it any easier for me to read. In my copy (the penguin classics) there was a little family tree that was quite helpful though. I literally just finished it last night and it was absolutely amazing. For me it was a little hard to read (I'm not a native english speaker), but still I managed to get the most out of it and just wow... great review as always!

Glad you enjoyed the book, Gianni. My edition didn't have a family tree which meant I had to keep google open whilst reading for the first few hours, lol. It is a literary beast!

I've already started reading this novel and am loving every piece of it, I feel so immersed in the story and just can't put it down ever since I started it honestly speaking. Thanks a lot for confirming to me about how difficult it is to digest it at the beginning coz I felt the same as well, and I felt like repeating some chapters and reading their summaries.Nevertheless, I'm still enjoying it and having higher expectations that it's going to be one of my best classics ❤

I found you here of nowhere 😅 and I must say that your video really impressed me... I agree with you, Wuthering Heights is truly a masterpiece and a love storie at the same time. Yes is a obsessive love storie, but still is a love storie, regardless is toxic. I think that the book is a masterpiece because the darkness and complexity of the characters transforms it in a masterpiece. The book is not about the plot, but about the mental state of ourselves and the consequences of our actions. Everything in our life happens because exist a action and a reaction after that, I'm not talking about destiny, but the power of our choices and our desires. Heathcliff is a great and interesting character and yes he doesn't make the better decisions and he doesn't treat the other people very well, but personaly, I have sorry for him and for his destiny. I think that Heatcliff is not a bad man, it is a lost man, with no hope. I adore Catherine too, but I prefer the daugther over the mother, simply because she decides not became like Heathcliff, and I think that she has a dark side too (the way she talk with the son of Heathcliff shows it). Well, I can stay here and write more reasons why I love Wuthering Heights, but the text will be huge 😅. By the way, english is not my native language, so if you saw any error in my text, you know the reason. 😅

Great review, looking forward to more stuff. If you want to read confusing novels, Pynchon’s Crying Lot Of 49 and his Gravity’s Rainbow are difficult, also all his novels with exception of Inherent Vice are difficult like Mason & Dixon

When I heard your quote of a 3.8 Goodreads rating for WH, I did a double take worthy of double Cathys or even George Foreman naming ALL of his kids "George". So, I looked up another literature masterpiece, 50 Shades of Grey, and noted that one is packing a Goodreads 3.7, not that I'm at all comparing the two books. People rate books based upon all kinds of well-reasoned or poor explanations, but it all comes down to whether the book speaks to the reader, and whether the reader is capable of understanding the intent(s) of the author. Some books attempt to explain the mystery and pain of existence. Other books are just trying to turn a cheap gimmick into a quick buck. Discussing the motives of readers in all their splendor and varieties will quickly take us into the weeds, so never mind with that. WH is a quite dense, difficult book. I've never been able to get through it. Its many-layered message is simply too dark and depressing for me. Fifty Shades? I'd be ashamed to even admit that I'd ever picked it off the shelf in a bookstore, let alone purchase it. But I understand if you tie it up and blindfold it, you might even rate it a 4.2, if you allow for an inflation factor. You won't even have to bend the cover......much.

In regards to Nelly and the unreliable narrator, she does seem genuine but there are a few times she mentions how she disliked Catherine (the elder) and I wonder how much this dislike tinged her account of Catherine. She also drives the plot infant cases. Fir example she doesn't warn Catherine that Heathcliff is listening to her speech until he runs off

I enjoyed the process of reading it once I came to terms with it. But it is strenuous to begin with - the date it was written combined with the narrative being somewhat confusing at times. Hope you like the second half better!
