In this video, see a vintage 1945 U.S. Army Signal Corps EE-8 field phone disassembled and given some basic maintenance. Maintenance includes lubrication of the hand crank generator and polishing of contacts for the microphone element (transmitter) and the earpiece element (receiver).
This field phone and its variants saw service for over 40 years through WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. Using phone-to-phone wired connections, it could communicate up to 17 miles on two D batteries. For more information, look up technical manual TM-11-333.

So, having bought two sets off Ebay, I followed all the advice from James and I am amazed: they both work! One is dated October 11th 1944, the other is earlier: May 9th 1942. Remarkable design and build quality, they still work after 75 and 77 years old......Many thanks for the advice James.

Awesome. A friend just brought us one for use in our kid's (totally awesome) treehouse. Now I just need to dig up another one. Thanks!

Thank you so much. I had bought one of these that had been sitting in storage for decades and didn't work. Crank would not move at all, and it would not transmit sound. Using this vid helped me get it as good as new

Just got a pair in excellent condition. I lucked out. One does not look like it was used. The cord and wires look nearly new. Thanks for the vid.

You only need 2 wires to talk on the LB (local battery) setting on the two big terminals, what you called left and middle, L1 and L2. The small terminal to the right is marked Bat for external power, when set to CB, (common battery). You do not need 3 wires, only 2. I was a USMC field wireman, 2511.

Hi James, I just got two EE-8’s and want to connect and test them, any recommendations for commercial grade wiring that I can get or does it have to be military grade? Thanks for assistance

Military WD-1 two strand wire is probably the best for regular EE8 setups. It is post WW2 if that's important to know. If you just want to play around with them, go down to Home Depot and get 100 feet of telephone wire. For connecting and two EE-8's each with their own batteries, you only need two wires. Have fun!

Hi, I have two Russian TA-57 field phones. One works perfect but the other is difficult to crank the magneto ringer and becomes extremely difficult (nearly impossible) when it’s wired to the other TA-57 or my Ericsson. But it will put out 90+ volts. So it seems to isolate the problem to the one phone. Can there be a short in the magneto and is it easy to rebuild? TIA.

I know that this video is fairly old, but is there a way to find out a year on when one of these were made? (besides having the year in the mouthpiece)

The dynamo on my EE-8-A turns easily enough but feels "blocky", if that makes sense. I've lubed the gears and shafts. Sort of seems to encounter some resistance while turning that isn't consistent. Is that normal?

that's kinda normal if I get your drift

I just bought one but the words are arranged differently than the one you have would that be a later version I think the one I have is because the phone line is coiled and is it the same way to maintain the internals even if it is different.

What else could I look at if I tried cleaning the contacts and I'm still not getting anything.

To clean the handset contacts use a pencil eraser, not so abrasive.

Will these only connect with another field phone? Will it connect with HAM radios as well?
@tapehead3832

Don't know. I do know that you can use it like a speaker if you hook speaker wire to it like it was a speaker and play something through it

What do these transmit on?
@WW2JeepandRifle
@WW2JeepandRifle 8 месяцев назад
The EE-8 field phone transmits over wire with no modulation. Straight signal from phone to phone over wire with minor amount of amplification.
