Today we are exploring a short tunnelled section of the fuel pipeline that was used to get the fuel from the main underground storage tanks on Portsdown Hill, 6 miles to the port.
As of February 2019 the whole site including the storage tanks are sealed and locked!

There are government fuel pipelines that start at Fawley oil refinery and go under Southampton water, then Southampton itself and on to Pompey. One pipeline goes up to London. If you look at the admiralty chart for the Solent you'll see them clearly marked. Hamble oil terminal also has a pipeline system

The tunnel is a lot newer than the pipeline. It was constructed when the M27 was built in the 70's/'80s.

How do you go about storing all these videos? My canon hfg25 creates huge video files. Then you need backups of course! The above video camera is incredible filming in low light conditions. And image stabilization is extremely good.

For anyone wondering what on earth IKS Exploration are doing using ropes, the answer is simple: there were no safety weeds growing at this site, unlike the Fortress Of Mimoyeques, in France. Nice one, gents.

It never fails to amaze me how much stuff is buried beneath our feet and what lengths the governments of the day went to to build such massive structures for the war effort. Great video as always guys !
@ChipGuy

Those pipelines are usually just buried into the ground like everything else. These tunnels are constructed when the weight load above the pipelines exceeds their limits. So the concrete tunnel takes all the load and reliefs the pipelines.

From the stretch in the rope when you're coming up it looks like you are using"Dynamic" rope, which stretches and is used as a safety rope when climbing, you should be using "Static" rope for abseiling!

Wow amazing, how did they get the pipes down there and join them together? Maybe they built the tunnel around the pipes?most of the country's airports are joined together like this they pump fuel around the country according to the demand.long-term it must save millions of pounds a year in transport costs from Milford haven to Southampton for example.
@brianartillery
@brianartillery 5 лет назад
Most pipelines are buried using a method called 'Cut & Cover'. A deep trench is dug, the pipes are laid in it, then the soil is replaced on top. This is the same, but concrete tunnel sections were assembled and laid down before the soil was replaced. The access points were built at the same time. Once the tunnels were stable, then the pipes were laid.
@IKS-Exploration
@IKS-Exploration 5 лет назад
I reckon the pipes had the Tunnel built over them.

For such short drops you might be better investing in a collapsible wire ladder similar to used in fire escapes it would be so much easier and safer.

There isn't a lot of it to see, but there is supposed to be one of the intermediate boost pumping stations still remaining. The other booster stations have been demolished. The boosters were approximately one mile apart. It would be interesting to find the remaining one, and there's probably the only other place to see pipes again, other than in the pump room at the depot itself.

I was wondering why Ian didn't just use the horseshoes on the other side to climb up and cinch up the rope to him and swing across. More than I could have done in my current condition, so kudos to you. I wish you would have gone up the ladder to check to see if you were actually inside the plant area or just another ventilation area, at the end of the tunnel. Shame all the light fixtures have been removed.

WW2 a pipe line called Pluto was laid from the UK on the sea bed to the french coast after D Day.
@whitesapphire5865
@whitesapphire5865 Год назад
Indeed there was Pipeline Under The Ocean ( even though it was only the English Channel). PLUTO was removed after the war, and was never connected to the furnace fuel oil depots. FFO was only usable in ships boilers, or other places where steam power was in use, but these pipes were installed purely for the purpose of moving fuel oil to and from the depot.

Are you sure they are not gas mains? I know there are 3 intermediate pressure mains that go from the ridout by the golf course, across portsdown hill, down under pompey, across the solent to feed the isle of wight.
@whitesapphire5865
@whitesapphire5865 Год назад
It's well enough documented, if you know where to look. The pipes to the oil depot were "dived" under the motorway when it was built, about 45 years ago. There are two sixteen inch pipes for the FFO, and originally, one eight inch pipe for diesel, and this what you'll find in this tunnel, only that the diesel pipe was replaced by two smaller diameter pipes for the short stretch under the motorway.
@chrissymon1001
@chrissymon1001 5 лет назад
Is this part of the fuel distribution pipeline that runs throughout a lot of the uk, to Milford Haven and the like? I believe a map of it can be purchased for £50
@whitesapphire5865
@whitesapphire5865 Год назад
No. It was built to serve the FFO storage/precipitation tanks in the RFA fuel depot. The design specifications called for two sixteen inch pipes for the FFO and one eight inch for diesel fuel. This section was modified to accommodate the motorway when it was built over the pipeline about 45 years ago. The depot was in service from the start of the second world war, until about 1993, when the last remaining Leander class RN frigates were decommissioned. The Royal Yacht "Britannia" was one of the last ships to be fueled by these pipes.
