My 7 year old and I look very your videos. He is on the autism spectrum and recently told me.he wants to fix old metal things. So we found an old rusty pipe wrench in our garage and we have started to slowly restore it. So far a good vinegar soak and some scrubbing with a wire brush. Hoping to work with him on it more this week. It's been great finding an interest he has through watching your channel and has given us another way to connect with him. ❤

@mrblack5145
@mrblack5145 16 дней назад
The metal isn't turning white; it's turning the color of bare metal. It appears brighter because you see the contrast between the freshly sandblasted portions and the raw, rust pitted portions. Also, the deformations and crevices in the metal allow the grit to scour tiny scratches all over but it's not smooth enough to achieve a mirror polish so what you're left with is metal that's clean enough to reflect light evenly but not smooth enough to reflect it perfectly, if that makes sense. It happens with any metal item that's sandblasted. Of course, the media that is used also makes a difference.
@ivanmit3366
@ivanmit3366 16 дней назад
So does that mean that the sandblasting reveals true color of the metal? Does it change color pretty soon after with oxidation?
@mrblack5145
@mrblack5145 16 дней назад
@ivanmit3366 oxidation varies upon the composition of the metal and the environment its in, but yes- that's why you see content creators applying oil to freshly blasted parts, to act as a moisture and oxygen barrier. The oil can easily be removed to apply the desired final finish.
@edwardsdarkmistress
@edwardsdarkmistress 16 дней назад
I have additional question: with the holes in the knife, doesn’t mean the metal is compromised and could easily break?
@mrblack5145
@mrblack5145 16 дней назад
@edwardsdarkmistress in a sense, yes; I'll admit I've not yet finished the video- because life happens- but unless he's hardened the metal or done something else to affect its structure, then it's obviously in a more brittle condition than when it was originally issued. That being said, it's very likely that this knife won't see anything remotely serious enough to stress the blade.
@MagistraNocte
@MagistraNocte 13 дней назад
I also guess that all the microscopic crevices and pits left from the rusting helps scattering light in a way that makes it white (it's not uncommon for porous materials to look bright/white)

Typically, sand or grit blasting to remove oxides or coatings with abrasive media results in a very thin layer of metal removed, leaving behind a "rough" surface texture that consists of microscopic peaks and valleys. I believe the visual appearance of "white metal" is actually very fine (micro) particulate from the abrasive that is embedded in the valleys on the surface of the metal. If that helps
