The Matilda II tank was one of the few tanks that saw action from the beginning of WW2 to its end.

The Stuart is also a early war tank that saw action from the start. ;).

Stuart was 41, not really in service 39-45 though... Panzer III and IV are classics that come to mind. But Souma, and CharB1 bis with the French, German and Free French(including Soumas in Tunisia) and then French army. (Recaptured Soumas and Char B 1 Bis Used in the siege of La Rochelle, and in sieges elsewhere till the end of the war) are unexpected ones that come to mind.

& in Afrika Korps service too until recaptured by rightful original owners.

Probably because the Matilda took all war to get from the rear areas to the front!

Close to the ideal tank for jungle fighting; small but heavily armoured it could drive through dense foliage. The only drawback is the track width, which could not be altered owing to the side skirts. It did not need to be any faster, because it would have been difficult for infantry to keep up in that type of terrain. Even the lack of a HE round is not an issue, as an AP shell would not be set off by jungle vegetation. The Japanese had no infantry gun that was effective against it, so it's main problem was mines or a lucky heavy artillery shell. No wonder it served till war end in the Pacific theatre.

The Australians fitted them with QF 3in howitzers for bunker busting. Worked a treat.

That's great footage; I've never seen any of it, before. Hard to believe that the 2-pdr was actually a viable anti-tank round in the early phase of the War.

0:52-0:58 is an M24 light tank

Yeah, would be in new Guinea undergoing jungle trials. The chaffee was found unsuitable, as the automatic gearbox was not suited to slow work. It kept wanting to change up a gear and would have worn excessively.

Next to the M24 is a Matilda to be pulled out.

One of the best British tank designs of WW2. Tank design was not a high point of the British WW2 effort. Best British tanks in order of their overall combat power versus the enemy at the time of their main service: Comet, Sherman FIrefly, Matilda, Churchill, Valentine, Cromwell, Crusader

I would argue the Churchill was much more effective than the Matilda, which pains me to admit lol.

The matilda is a nightmare for infantry pill boxes and bunkers😮😅....this was 1 of britians genius designs😊 ...i call it a bull dog❤ cause thats what it is. Thick Sloped armor and a fast firing 2 pounder. So it would slowly creep up too you in plain sight with infantry behind and flanking😅....as Ms Matilda gets closer...and closer...ur german infantry and panzergrenaders are running out of options😅 u see large mortar rounds barely affecting its pace😮...now its 50 yards away 😮😮😮😮😅 and you cant just get out of the trench and run....because the matilda also has a co ax machine gun😅 yes a good enough tank can smash a matilda but the matilda wasnt for tank combat i think its a break through tank designed for taking out defenses.

Great footage - thanks for cleaning up available footage and sharing! The Australian War Memorial site has some great film, including of competitive armoured vehicle trials in the jungle where the Matilda II performed better than most other AFVs. M24 Chaffee that include comparison to the performance of the Matilda II: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JVO7WLkGfHc.html
