I wouldn't be surprised if there are many other tanks left undiscovered out there. considering the number of tanks passed through those regions in the war and the swamps and bogs to preserve them

I’ve seen this tank with my own eyes. This museum also has a Ju-87 Stuka that was recovered from the Mediterranean, among a fantastic collection of civilian and military land vehicles and aircraft. Very much worth a visit.

Been there several times as a kid, never long enough. Could not read German and had no idea about tank types, but I knew all the stories from the books. They probably acquired a lot since my last visit 30 years ago. And yes, it is in Germany, not in Ukraine Edit: typo

During the Cherkassy pocket battles Wiking Panzer crewmen raced in to plug a gap in the lines with their Panthers and Tigers on trains...being forced to drive directly off the train cars in Kowel and literally firing and maneuvering directly from the train cars. Cherkassy was also Belgian SS Officer and Rexist leader Leon Degrelles claim to fame where he won his Knights Cross and Close Combat Clasp in Silver.

Staging at railhead was always and issue for German units arriving in the area in Russia. Soviet switch yards and or rail sidings areas averaged about 28+ miles apart due to terrain and geography. The Reichsbahn lines had a much shorter about 15 mile switch yard intervals. German Planners did not realize Soviet rail yards/sidings were so far apart either to monetary issues of Soviet rail or just did not need stop points closer to the European norm. The Germans either had to disembark from the train early or ride the train up to the front in perilous proximity to the front action.

@@badbotchdown9845 I read an article about it a few years ago. I think it dealt with Ukrainian rail and grain points of embarkation during the Soviet farmer purges in the 1930s. Will have to look for it again.

@Uncle Sam Yes, they already knew the gauge size as German/ Soviet rail trade was quite common up to June 21st 1941. June 22nd was also coincided with the last Soviet export train that morning crossing over the border at Poland. That Soviet train literally passed within view of German tanks and equipment staging for attack in mere hours. Germany kept that last Soviet train by the way. Future tense AH had envisioned a much much wider size rail width for his future Reichsbahn/Russo super trains that would trek past the Urals in a great Germanic superstate.

This reminds me. There was a RU-vidr called deep digger Dan, he would metal detect. Once while doing some in a Berlin park, he found a decent sized gun barrel sticking about a half a foot out of the ground. It was in a forested area and easy to miss. He didn't dig it up. The gun barrel looked too small for a tank. My guess is that is was a anti aircraft gun that was buried and forgotten

I visited the sister museum in Speyer last Friday (about a 20 minute drive from Sinsheim). There you can visit one of the few remaining original Buran Space Shuttle and the only surviving BF109G4 (afaik). Can't wait to visit the Panther Tank as well. Thanks for the reminder, Mr. Felton!

Well, technically it's not a Buran, that's a model that was used for atmospheric tests. On the plus side, it's the only one that got off the ground except for Buran's single space flight. Damn shame it was destroyed.

Just kidding, I looked at the map and just guestimated. @Justin Wellington: Well yes, it's the orbiter prototype with 4 jet engines strapped on for the atmospheric test flights. I was spellbound reading about the exploits of the Wiking Division’s commander, Karl Nicolussi-Leck, when two Panthers encountered over 70 Soviet tanks, including KVs, T-34s and Stalins. The Germans knocked out about half of the Soviets and then withdrew in good order. Amazing stuff.

You are conflating two stories, the story of the battle of Kovel , which is the german victory in the defense of Kovel, and the story of evacuation of Kovel , which is due to the bigger picture being a German loss - the general retreat from Ukraine. Nicolussi-Leck being part of the effort to evacuate from Kovel. Its part of the Poleskoe offensive.while the russians believed it weak and hence confidently drove in. The germans were in their defensive position, as Kovel was good for defense. The russians surrounded Kovel, but their tanks were wiped out , as they could not attack in a safe way. No matter, the russians regrouped and tried again.. to be wiped out again. So the siege started, fortified Kovel vs russian with no tanks. Then the germans moved 9 divisions into the area, and Karl leads 19 tanks to create a path to evacuate Kovel. Karl and 5 tanks survive to reach Kovel, also showing how the area was good for the defenders.. Karl attacking into russian held territory. loses 14 tanks... But no there was not 70 soviet tanks for karl to wipe out, they had already been wiped out !!! Karl did not lead 19 tanks against 70 soviet tanks ??? Its not possible and not his mission, he did target a soviet strong hold, he targetted a german strong hold, and raced there to make use of the situation that just five tanks was enough to break the germans out of Kovel.

This is literally the best ch on RU-vid. My great grandfather was apart of the Germany army during WW2, he was high ranking. When my great grandparents came to the United States after the war, they changed our last name from muller to miller. We still have so much of his stuff and diaries. I love WW2 history. Keep the good work up Mark.

I saw that Panther at the German museum. I was stationed at Spangdahlem AFB, which enabled me to visit many Battle of the Bulge, and other war sites. That museum is quite incredible. A Must-See for any military vehicle enthusiast.

also visit the Tank Museum in Saumur, France. Huge collection of all types of tanks including Panthers, Jadgpanther and Tiger 2. They even have WW2 German horse drawn cart.

Panther may have been the most balanced model literally due to it's name. Albert Speer recounted it was given the name of an agile animal in order to counter Adolph's typical demands to overburden it with excessive armor and up-gunning.

Panther was an innovative design but in typical german fashion, it was over engineered and difficult to produce quickly. It still astounds me that were not all speaking german today. The depth of their plans for the future and the advanced technology they developed could have overpowered the allies if deployed by a sane leader. Everything they manufactured from the Jerry can, to the mg 42, and panther was vastly superior to western weaponry at the time.

You mean like that T-34 they pulled from some swamp? It is hilarious that it was better preserved, and for a far longer time, than modern armour is in the Russian army. I have heard rumors that up to 4 out of every 5 tanks the Russian army had in storage is found to be "unusable" now when they are pulling them out of storage. But that T-34 was in a swamp for more than half a century, and all you had to do was clean out the mud, add some oil to the engine, and diesel to the fueltank, and it is ready to go!

@@Kexxey123 Good question! Even considering the Panther was a good tank in its day, its day was 75 years ago so I'd think it wouldn't last too long. Then again, it's not just the tank it's how well the crews are trained in how to use it. From what I've seen those poor Russian tankers seem to be pretty deficient in training. Not their fault, it's the higher-ups that are to blame. I'm reminded of the 1967 war when Israeli Shermans came up against Syrian Panzer IV's. On the surface it should have been an even match but the Israelis slaughtered those Syrians. The difference? The Israelis knew how to use those Shermans, Syrian training on the Panzer IV's was practically non-existant. What it amounts to is it doesn't matter how brave you are or how motivated you are if you're not trained on how to use your gear and tactics for the same you might as well stay home for all the good you're going to do.

RayVal53: Yes the Emu War was a terrible campaign: so much so that it has been deliberately left out of the history books!! Those who participated in it were traumatised for life from experiencing one of histories worst massacres of all time!! ....and yet despite all that bloodshed and loss of life, the aggressors finally admitted defeat and withdew, thereby giving final victory to the Emus - who never fired a shot in their defence!! This being a remarkable fact of victory in the history of warfare!! 🤣👍

The German Wiking Division was a very well trained unit. Though it fought valiantly it could not stop the Russians' assault. This exhumed tank is a piece of history on the ferocity of the battle taken between two forces. Kudos Mark, you have done it again!

Wiking division was mostly various rabble from Scandinavian countries, that mate they doom at Korsun pocket (2/3 of soldiers destroyed there). Overall, considering the equipment they had not much combat value, but they were good at terrorizing local population.

@@Sam-lj9vj Not every member of the Red Army was Russian in terms of ethnicity or contemporary nationality. There were many Ukrainians, Kazakhs, Turkmen, Azeris, and Belarusians who served in the Red Army. Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Belarus are not part of the Russian Federation, and their people are about as Russian as your average Austrian can be considered a German.

I've seen this one up close. Immense damage. Lots of great artifacts at that museum. They have a complete Panther on a plinth and if you drop a Euro in a little machine you can make the tracks move and elevate the gun a little. Kids love it. I LOVE IT TOO!

I was astounded when in 2014 I watched a battle rage next to a monument to a WWII tank battle in Ukraine. I could not conceive that there was a war however limited being fought in Europe... very disheartening.... 8 years later that frozen conflict has reignited...

I was watching Battleline on operation Barbarossa. The narrator said that even the Germans were amazed at the number of Russians lost. The Russians used their own troops at gun point to march through mine fields. They threw Russian troops away like we through out trash. Sad…….

Another little gem of military history presented by Mr. Felton. I enjoy the dramatic intro music as well as Mr. Felton' s excellent pronounciation that makes the comment very easy to comprehend also for non-English audience (in sharp contrast to the blurred stammering of e.g. "Dark Docs").

July 26, 2022 - The WWII Panther Tank is one of my all time favorite tanks. I think that it probably could have held its own against tanks that were made ten years after WWII. Great lines and a powerful gun, plus other details I'm probably not aware of. I put together a really nice plastic model of a Panther from a kit back in the mid 1950's along with a lot of other military models. Interesting how many people are familiar with the Tiger tanks, but I doubt many know about, or have heard about the Panther.

@@AKguru762 I think legendary in the sense of design and crunch time of AH demanding a new heavier tank. It was worthy to a point that is was not a complete dismal utter failure, abandoned worthy. That chin mantlet shot trap doomed a lot of drivers underneath it. The lack of planetary gears or spline gears in the transfer case was horrific underperforming situation. As it was for the mid to late war era, the StuGs were the backbone of the Panzerwaffe.

Twenty years ago I was doing business in Hungary and heard of two light weight tanks. They were skuttled into lake Balaton by the retreating Germans because of a lack of fuel. The Germans did not want the tanks to fall into the hands of the advancing Russians. This was reported to my by an old man who had lived in the area during the war. As far as he knew the tanks had never been salvaged .

Rivera Harper I have had adult Hungarians make fun of my American accent to my face. Business partners lie,cheat and steal, officials that expect bribes. My experience was very few people showed any business ethics. Many years ago I decided to no longer do business in Magyar orszag.

@@gaborkorthy8355 my father is from transylvania he went in hungary long ago and happened the same with the language they were refusing to sell in a store cause of the language guessing some people are how they are what im guessing is that they see hungarians from outside as traitors or less than them i dont know , i had family from hungarian side that went to US when world war two started and hungarian grand grand father had to fight for romania cause family is from bottom side of transylvania and was shot two times ... anyway im planing on going to hungary when im older but im half romanian too soo i will have it rough but we need to overcome things and looking at how is America and europe hungary is the best place right now to live ,long text damn have a good day sir !

Many panthers were used tk destroy Germany. Many nations fought throughout Europe before during and after WW1 WW11 until today!!!

I’ve seen this tank in person. Note in the final clip there is a slide that comes out of the ceiling. That exits one of the planes that is mounted on the roof of the building. Thanks for posting the Mark as I had no idea of the origin of this tank!

3:16 It's interesting how I think this cracking and shattering damage might be indicative of the dubious quality of late-war German armour. While full ammunition cook-offs can obviously be colossal, that kind of complete shattering of armour plates isn't normal Extensive edit for clarification lol: Any tank would obviously be devastated from it's ammunition detonating. I'm making observations about the nature of the damage. Pressure finds weak points. In a ww2 tank, a couple of those obvious weak points are the hatches and the turret ring (turret is primarily held down by it's own weight). Once one area fails, it relieves pressure from other areas. After that you might expect the connections between plates to fail. excessively

Even though you arent to wrong about the dubious quality, a full blown cook off could have done that for sure! Explosions in nearly completly closed quartes with few room for venting can be terrible.

From what I understand, well made armour plate typically tears and bends when exposed to extreme stresses like shell impacts and huge explosions.

If you look more closely at pictures of tanks that have experienced ammunition detonations, you see plates tear and bend, often separating from the vehicle at connections between plates like welds

Mark, This episode is fantastic. I own many German Tiger tank track pieces that came from the Cherkassy pocket battle. My Tiger tank was destroyed by an anti gun in Kurson. I literally get the chills evertime I handle my Tiger track items....a very haunting feeling, for a life long WW2 student of history like myself. The book "combat history of the Schwere Panzer Abteilung 503" covers this battle from the German soldier's perspective. Thank you for posting.

I wouldnt be suprised if many shell craters throughout ukraine have relics and even forgotten soldier remains in them, thats a good reminder as to the men, what the last major war fought there caused

You're more likely to see operational ww2 vehicles in Syria. I remember the rebels in southern Syria had a Stug/Stuh around 2015, there was footage of it in combat as well but the glorious censors of the RU-vid Soviet have wiped pretty much all of the Syria stuff off. I mean there was some -extremely- graphic stuff but a lot of future historically valuable footage as well. Couple of operational t34s saw action as well.
