Sad that this battle is so unknown. We are told about Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Wake Island, GuadalCanal. But I really don't remember hearing about Peleliu until reading With the Old Breed and later the TV series The Pacific. This was truly a turning point(among many) in the Pacific Theater as it was really the first battle that the Japanese drastically changed their tactics, which they would enhance and build upon for Iwo Jima where American casualties exceeded that of the Japanese for the first and only time. And it is widely believed this battle wasn't necessary and could have been skipped. Such loss. Semper Fi Marines past and present!

The air field was what they where worried about. Get it even semi up and running even enough to use as suicide runs can do a lot of damage from behind American lines. That was the big threat

Faint sounds of soldiers emit from the long lost aircraft and land vehicles of the nations. Remembering all the pain they went through. The depression and guilt they suffered. Sounds of gunshots, artillery barrages, planes diving down, and carpet bombs. All being heard by infantry. And finally. Your old man. Sits down at the front porch. Rocking back and forth on his rocking chair. The words of my grandfather. Lt. Major Lewis Millet 47th Infantry Regiment The Wolfhounds.

Awesome 👍 About 1,600 American troops died during and after the landings, but of nearly 11,000, only about 100 Japanese survived the invasion force of over 18,000 Marines on Peleliu. Eventually, the Marines were forced to build barricades after giving up trying to flush them all out of the defensive caves and tunnels they'd honeycombed the surrounding area with, instead just sealing them in and allowing them to die by the thousands. The Japanese government has spent the last three quarters of a Century trying to find and repatriate as many as possible in an ongoing process. These wreckages and remains are especially poignant because they still lie exactly where the equipment was knocked out of the battle after a couple months of fighting a campaign that was originally thought to last less than a week prior to making landfall. A person could spend MONTHS there, searching around. The battlefield guide is named Des Matsuro, he's a local and is tasked with the small team of tour guides informing the thousands of visitors to the island every year. Definitely the person to look up beforehand, unless trudging around unguided is more your style. To this day the Japanese government returns periodically in their continuing effort to find more human remains for repatriation, reuniting them with their families, and posterity overall. Amazing footage, mate. 👍 I envy you the opportunity. Japan searches for WWII soldiers' remains on Peleliu www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/11/japan-searches-wwii-soldiers-remains-peleliu-191127123311859.html

Always great respect for the Marines who are the greatest amphibious assault warriors ever, but it has to be remembered that the Marines were withdrawn from this island after five weeks of fighting with heavy losses and it’s commander kicked back to the U.S. to take a non-combat assignment. The final three months were fought by the US Army’s 81st Infantry Division who had to go cave by cave until the Japanese were finally defeated in the mountains on the north of the island. My father fought there with the 81st Infantry (The Wildcats). In fact his battalion commander was the highest ranking officer killed in the invasion when he was shot by a sniper while at my dad’s company command post. There is a great memorial to the men on the 81st on the eastern side of the island.

There aren't a whole lot of people there now - it's mostly one small town with a couple of hotels. There were some campgrounds as well but it doesn't seem to get a lot of tourists - maybe just people staying for a night or two to dive. There are only a couple of shops and no restaurants or bars - if I go back, which I've been considering in order to make some much more detailed and high quality videos, I'll chat to the locals some more. One thing I'm curious about is the massive amount of abandoned (modern) cars lying around the place.

You can see how cleanly pierced it is on the back and sides 😐 don't even want to imagine what they would have had to deal with. Even the LVT after it has been piereced at least twice at the back from what was shown. That's what I wanted to do when I was there in 2006 working on the highway. Unfortunately I never found the time so thanks for this video! When the highway was being built Daewoo had to have a demolition crew because there were so many live shells, stockpiled all over the islands. They had a room that they called the museum with all kinds of shells, bullets and bombs you name it they had it. They looked almost new! There were stockpiles of them from WW2 that they had to decommission (maybe not the right word). One of the biggest battles in WW2 and my father inlaw was there. He was on what he called a tin can (some kind of battleship). He said that they shelled the islands for two days and that it looked like the islands were literally jumping out of the water! I was told several times how much the Palauan people like Americans. I was treated like royalty. The reason for that is that we liberated them from Japanese occupation. The Japanese were very cruel to them. They saw how difficult it was to take the islands back and how many Americans died in the process. I love Palau and especially the Palauans. They weren't very nice to Japanese tourists though. I saw it firsthand. It looks like Palau has come a long ways just since 2006. Too bad.

DC, he was probably on a destroyer. They were usually referred to as "tin cans".

Quite a few years ago, I was in Papua New Guinea. The stuff you can find is just insane. You could literally start a museum with what is still out there, but, its a wild country. The rascals are into meth big time and malaria is rampant. Both underwater and on ground detecting will yield lots.

Do you remember which part of the country you saw the war relics in? I'm considering a trip there at some point (though only after getting some local contacts - I know PNG is no joke when it comes to crime etc)

@@PaulKempVideo Mate, the whole east coast area. I was in Madang then out onto a few islands, but, find a decent guide or family who know where. There's been drama with people taking souvenirs as human remains are still in some wrecks. I dived onto a downed Zero and human remains could easily be seen. That was in 1997.

My grandpa landed there at 17. 1st Division. I wish he would of told me at 13 but he wouldn’t. He saved some stuff I got 20 years later. It’s horrific. Grandpa lost his best friend and killed so many. To come back home after that 😢Men where seriously tough mentally then.

Funny thing is Marine Corps would look at these vehicles and still say they are combat ready with some cleaning from simple green and a power washer, good to go.

Amazing that any of this metal hardware is even still standing considering it's close proximity to salt water.

Believe it or not. My most intense experience on Peleliu was on that lagoon beaches in the southeast. Beautiful. But i saw that piece of scrapmetal near the beach and wondered what it is. A native there told me its an warplane engineblock. Everything was washed away. The engineblock was just undestructable by the waves. The pilot was told to have survived. Rescued by natives. Greetings from Bavaria.

That wrecked aircraft at the beginning is definitely a Mitsubishi A6M Zero. I was wondering if he was going to find a wrecked USMC Corsair.
