The Free French pilots of the "Normandie" group in USSR had chosen this aircraft from among those presented to them. They dismissed the Hurricanes and the P39s. This plane was remarkable in every way, one of the best fighters of the 2nd world war.
@leneanderthalien
@leneanderthalien 3 года назад
The Normandie Niemen squadron, did fly on Yak 1, most on Yak3 and at end Yak 9.They choose the Yaks to honour the Soviet union, and the mecanics from the squadron was all russians, and all togeter was a fantastic team = this was never forgott from the Russians, up today...But the Normandie Niemen pilots may known that the Yaks are relative comparable to the most modern french fighters because they engine is very similar: the klimov 105 is a evolution from the Hispano Suiza Y12 (USSR did buy the licence before ww2), inclusive the 20mm integrated canon (similar to the Hispano HS404),and the global design from the yaks is relative close to the last 1940 french fighter like the Dewoitine D551 (4 built but to late to be engaged) and Arsenal VG33 (only a hand full engaged). Some of the pilots from the Normandie Niemen was distinguished as "hero from the soviet union" who was the highest soviet order...

I don't think that it is underrated rather unknown, I just think not many people know of it's existence and really the war on the Eastern front period. Those who know about it recognize it as one of the best fighters in the world at that time.
@martijn9568

MEs61 Primitive may equal good. And the German fighters were more sophisticated then the p51 and spitfire in my opinion. The German fighters could automatically regulate propeller pitch settings, depending on speed and power setting.
@martijn9568
@martijn9568 6 лет назад
@MEs61 You seem to forget what the Yak 1, 3 and 9 were designed for; for the air superiority role on the eastern front. In that case, the yaks were better then the Messerschmitts. The longrange aspect wasn't really used on the eastern front. As for the P-51. Yes, it was good in what it was designed for, but that role wasn't ground attack. If we look at the Korean War you will know that the losrates for the ground pounding P-51's were very high, partly in how it was designed. Therefore I wouldn't call the P-51 a good multi role fighter, aka fighterbomber.

The Yak-3 is so light and docile in control that it seems as if it is not a fighter with 1500 hp. under the hood, but aerobatic Extra! It seems to me that he was the lightest fighter in the world created in the second half of WWII Unfortunately, not a single original aircraft has survived to this day, however, Novosibirsk replicas with Alissons under the hood are good too (but the modern engine, surprisingly, is weaker than those that were put on the original aircraft, at least for later modifications with the VK-107 engine and two 12.7 mm machine guns that complemented the 20 mm ShVAK canon)!

1/3 the cost, easier to maintain, easier to repair, much easier to fly and land for low time pilots. Better at protecting ground attack aircraft and low level combined arms action. On the other hand, no radios or poor radios, bad fuel capacity, sometimes bad quality of resins and glues. Overall, best cost effective use of material and design.
@leneanderthalien
@leneanderthalien 3 года назад
The Yak 3 is a all metal built (glue and resin problems was on german prototypes like Horten) and is a light interceptor similar to a Spitfire , Dewoitine D520, bf109, not a long range fighter...germans use many short range fighters or very short range like Me 262 or extremly short range like me 163...

I downloaded this plane on MS Flight Sim. I really get annoyed by that bar that's blocking the top part of the instrument panel. And what the hell is that brown part in the middle? A cork pillow in case your head goes flying forward? At high speed and low altitude the plane shakes a lot. Is this normal for these kinds of fighters? Otherwise fun plane. Be interesting in knowing how realistic the sim is and compare it to other WW2 fighters.

2105kg of empty mass (2650kg take-off mass) with a 1320hp engine (if we talk about original VK-105PF2 ), this plane had only 2kg/hp ratio and great aerodynamic profile, giving it great acceleration. On par with that Yakovlev fighters were always made with a focus on an average soviet fighter pilot, being responsive and easy to control.
@leneanderthalien
@leneanderthalien 3 года назад
@@MDzmitry Yes all true, but looks like the Yaks was inspired from the 1940 french fighters who had similar qualities, and a similar engine (VK105's are evolutions from the Hispano Suiza Y12).In 1946 did the french aircraft builder Dewoitine modify for comparative tests a D520 with a RR Merlin same model as use on Spitfire mk1 (1940): the result was that the D520 was +20km/h faster as the Spitire with same engine, and agilty was similar (confirmed from the german ace Adolf Galland who find the D520 very pleasant to fly...)

@@lostinthesauce6409 that's a misunderstanding, 3km is the altitude where M-105PF2 has a gear switch, meaning a decrease in performance, but overall Yak-3 can perform quite nicely up to 5km, overall being able to get up to around 11km. But again, up to 3km Yak-3 performed the best, up to 5km it kept up with enemy fighters but with less of an advantage and above it became less and less powerful.
