My grandpa served in the south Pacific during the second world war, from 1942-1944. He passed almost 11 years ago, but in the early 2000's we did an interview with him on a Video Camera(one of those mid 90's shoulder mounted VHS monsters) If your interested in posting it, ill ask my dad and uncles if they're okay with sending the video to you for use in this series. As long as there is no editing and its played in its entirety, I'm sure theyll be fine with me sending it(I have it in a digital format)

He strikes me as a gentle soul, with a strong sense of duty. I get the feeling he hopes he never killed anyone with his machine gun, but soberly accepts the fact that he most likely did. He did what he was sent over there to do, saw it through and managed to retain his humanity.

I'd be a frickin' basket case returning home from War, but not just any war, World War MF'ing TWO, what a scary war to have had to fight. The reason I am able to live a comfortable life as an electrician and not get drafted into a war is because of he, and all of the men of his generation, who were mostly just kids at the time (17-22). Wild, man. I ALWAYS thank veterans for their service, even if I have to go way out if my way. Every singke American should be that way too, shame on people who just walk past vets without saying anything

These guys never say they were heroes. They say "I did what I'd been set over there to do." They seldom go into detail about their own actions, but often tell of the deeds they watched their buddies do. Always humble. I think it's the quieter, more soft spoken ones who've done the most bravest things. I myself believe that they know God watched what they were doing and they don't want retribution brought down on their heads because they bragged about killing. But that's just my opinion. Thank you guys living and passed. You are my heroes.

He was in the Color Guard every 4th of July and also attended every military funeral in the county. He was also the Commander of our post once. Like I said, our Veterans are my heroes. Perhaps you have misunderstood what I was saying? Younger men may be outspoken in their youth, but mellow in their old age. And I imagine going thru combat in WWII would be a very sobering experience. But like I said, that's just my opinion.

For a lot of Americans, it *was* going back to fight alongside family. Lots of English settlers here, Scots-Irish and Irish, as well as French. Of course there were also Italians, Germans, and Japanese-Americans who signed up to fight against family too. I've always admired the wartime British for their grim determination and fearlessness, the stereotypical "stiff upper lip" that they always seem to wear in the face of insurmountable odds. Churchill addressed the UK to say that even if the country fell, the British people would fight on until the bitterest of ends. When Roosevelt addressed the US, he could not fathom a defeat - it was always clear that the Americans would win, because that's just what Americans did. One side brought courage, the other brought raw grit.

The plane disintegrated and he saw two parachutes open (likely from the blast) but they were immediately consumed by the flames. 10 men died near instantly. He had trained with them, lived with them for months and he was very close to them all as friends. It was a memory forever imbedded in his mind. He never spoke of it until later in his life. He left us a couple years ago at over 101 years of age...independent until the end.

My grandfather was on the intrepid. He never talked about the war. After his death we found a box in hi closet that had every single thing he kept from the war. His shellback card, navy drivers license, 2 bronze stars, dd-214, western union receipts, commendation letters, etc. He did talk about "sailing the intrepid (his ship) over 2000 miles". This was confirmed by the secretary of the navy at the last intrepid anniversary I attended. They made a sail to steer the ship after having the rudder damaged beyond use. That was the most he ever told us. I often wonder what he went through that he didn't feel comfortable talking about it. Miss him I do.

@@retardedsandwich101 So sad to see, all this civil disruption by BLM, CRT in schools, polarization on almost every topic. But is it better there...?

@@Winchester1973 the cities are living hell IMO. In rural areas our infrastructure is garbage, but I feel it's almost a utopia. For example there is almost no violent crime at all and people are generally decent to one another. Houses are also dirt cheap, in the midwest you can find land for less than 1k/acre and there are endless job opportunities
