And when the German garrison finally surrendered, pretty much the only buildings left standing in the town were the U-boat pens. The French would try demolishing them after the war, and failed. So they're still standing to this day. The port itself was a wreck and unusable, taking months to clear. After that bloody experience, they decided it was a waste of time trying to capture those ports so they just left them penned up and moved on.

You can do the pacific front, the italian front, sino - japanese war and then you may go back in time or in the future. Back in time, may be everything before ww2 for example ww1, while in the future you may do something like the korean war, or any of the proxy - wars in the cold war. I hole you can use some of these ideas for your next videos.

@Dave_Sisson 3 года назад
But which Pacific front? The fight against the Japanese was so fragmented, I suspect you mean either the Chinese front or the huge British and Indian campaign on the Burmese front. But there were so many others, especially the Americans and Australians fighting their own separate campaigns on islands rather than the Asian mainland.
@punchdreadnought8101
@punchdreadnought8101 3 года назад
@@Dave_Sisson i think the Second Sino-Japanese war is kinda similar to Vietnam War, in which Chinese used combined tactics of guerilla warfare with communist soldiers, and conventional warfare with kuomintang army and there were few major battles. The South East Asian and Pacific theatre would be more interesting as the Brits and Americans were the main destroyer of Imperial Japan, similar to how Soviet Union was the main protagonist of European theatre.

Tbh if i was Hitler, i would have surrendered after France was liberated. The entire war post summer 1944 was an inevitable German defeat, and could have ended without millions dying for another 6 months.

Hitler didn't care, he even said it at the end in the bunker. 'The German people have proved weak and deserved to be wiped out', that was his Darwinian world view that only the strong race survived, that is why he initiated the "Nero Decree". As far as he was concerned, there was no future for Germany after he was gone, because they have proved weak and deserved to perish as nature intended. Why not fight the war to the end and gamble on things like the Ardennes, it didn't matter to him if he lost in May 1945 or August 1945, he was dead either way and he may as well go down fighting as long as the German people were willing to die for him and his regime.

@@akuheikeiserllen3078 Yeah, it was a fortress garrison to deny the port. Became pointless once the Allies got Antwerp, plus they cleared a few other ports on the coast. At that point they just maintained the siege until the end of the war rather than waste the lives storming the town.

@@kellyshistory306 a) dont think the allied stopped bombing and shelling these pockets for a day. people talk about Dresden, while Hamburg was worse and the Ruhr-pocket was hell on earth. people talk about Dresden, because the right wing neonazis in easterngermany like to point at their Dresden, while Hamburg was even under NS-rule a SPD-city and the Ruhr was traditional left, often even communistic area. even today neonazis wont point at the biggest destruction and suffering of german civilians for political reasons, even after 80 years later. Dresden was in contrast a clever and reasonable bombing raid from a tactical perspective. b) the civilians in these tows had to suffer from constant shelling and air-raids, evacuated in special bunkers, in some cases for days and the nazis/soldiers used explicit the last hours for big crimes against prisoners, forced workers and foreign civilians, even sometimes straight up pillaged their own population. partly, because the discipline lacked after the imminent doom. partly, because some people tried to escape at the cost of others, explicit the officers. in many cases officers send german soldiers to despreat last defends and than just used these "defenses" to break out and flee from the enemy for a "later defense"

And, ironically, those same trapped German troops on Dunkirk also launched the last German offensive of the war, operation Blücher, a tiny minor victory in April 1945.
