At WWE Unforgiven 2008, a new concept known as the Championship Scramble was introduced to fans. Five superstars compete in a title match, with two wrestlers in the ring at the beginning of the contest. Every five minutes a new superstar enters, and altogether the match has a twenty minute limit. During the match, earning a pinfall or submission makes you the current champion, but you have to remain champion till the end of the contest in order to win the gold.
On the show, there were three different Championship Scrambles featured (one for each brand). For SmackDown, Triple H was scheduled to defend the WWE Championship against four of SmackDown's greatest talents at the time; Brian Kendrick, Jeff Hardy, MVP, and Shelton Benjamin. In a match where he had an 80% chance of losing the belt, Triple H had his back to the wall, and it would take everything he had in the tank in order to try and emerge victorious.
