Imma defend Khali a bit here, when he wrestled in Japan and México he was actually pretty agile and could offer decent matches. He was never a Kurt angle, but he was closer in performance to peak Big Show. By the time he made it to WWE he already lost a lot of mobility due to knee injuries, he even told that to WWE befofe being signed. So yeah, although he was bad in WWE it was for a good reason.

same here. those programms took off years from his career. he even said it in interviews like mentioned in the video. dude has had so many fking injuries throughout his career that when you start reading the list of em youll be surprised. pretty much shows why he looks so fking old at 55 while sting who didnt take as many bumps/injuries as taker still can move around pretty well at 65. if taker had a proper career without as many injuries/bumbs as he did, he prolly would still be giving main event matches at wrestlemanias. it feels so bad just thinking about it.😔

The sad thing is most of these guys could have been great if they'd been left to develop in the undercard for a while, but they were virtually all pushed too far, too soon and not given that time to develop into the roles Vince wanted for them. Then there's veterans like Khali who came as proven talents, but since Vince refuses upon pain of death to ever admit that any competing brand ever exists, he books himself into a corner with accomplished vets and can't build that into their characters. If he'd done that, he'd have been able to play off Khali's accomplishments in Mexico and Japan and presented him as a veteran who's a bit banged up and looking to reinvent himself to still capitalize on his size and strength, while working around his knee injuries. They could even have used that to book him more sparingly as he's "taking breaks to rest his knees" every now and then. Or even have an opponent target his knees as a way to book him a credible loss here and there.

The big problem Taker had in that respect was that a) he was a big guy so being bigger than him created a 'wow' factor in theory and he was also a big draw, so feuding with him automatically gave a rub; b) he was a very good worker in his own right, so was trusted more than most of the other big men of the time to work with these very green talents. You'll see the same thing in latter days happen with Kane (e.g. Snitsky and Boogeyman) and Big Show. It's a poisoned chalice, it's a positive that you're seen as that trustworthy and dependable by the office, but a negative that you're gonna have some of these terrible matches as you've got to work with guys that aren't ready for the spot.

I’m gonna have to defend Khali here just a little. He couldn’t wrestle once he was signed by WWE. I saw some videos of the great Khali in his earlier in his wrestling days that man actually had a very diverse set of moves and incredible mobility He could even jump over the top rope. The problem was he was suffering from a condition, which eventually took affect by the time he had signed by WWE making his in ring performances look sloppy. 10. Obviously. She couldn’t wrestle, so why did WWE bring her back in 2021? 9. Khali did have some sort of success. 8. Still, why did he wear that ridiculous costume? (I think we all know he had the worst match with Undertaker.) 7. The only thing that worked for him was the spookiness….and that was pretty much it. 6. Nathan Jones was not ready for the main roster. 5. His wrestling was not great. 4. His wrestling was not great either. 3. He was pushed way too soon and was simply not ready. However, he did get over once he paired up with Santino Marella. 2. He was way too stiff and reckless with others. 1. Can agree with the thoughts. Although his wrestling wasn’t great, he had the character and aura to help tell stories. (Minus his run in 1996.)

As much as I love Kevin Nash, that was another guy who was extremely limited...and he himself would be the first to tell you that. Even his days as Oz and then Diesel, Vince McMahon saw his size, and combined with the fact he was also handsome, Vince began pushing him to the top of the card with guts like Bret Hart who had literally hundreds of more matches under his belt. Vince made this mistake many, times throughout the 80's and 90's....trying to find the next Hulk Hogan; who as we all know when it comes to versatility in the ring, was extremely limited. Charisma, and ability to connect with an audience can really cover up many limitations though....at least back then.😊

Controversial pick, but original run Mark Henry. Because a lot of these guys had pretty short runs (Jones, Heidenreich) or were already physically broken down by the time they competed (Gonzalez, whose knees were shot from basketball), they never got the chance to improve. Mark Henry's original run when he was signed from weightlifting and thrown on TV with almost no training, he was absolutely terrible, and the office clearly knew it, trying to give him angles and portrayals so bad that it would make him quit, with the comedy foil stuff that drove a lot of people here out of town. However, Henry took his punishment, licked his wounds, learned the business and improved to the point of going on some very respected and even beloved runs, the Hall of Pain run and the retirement bait and switch being very highly thought of now. He's a rare example of somebody who was overpushed when way too green for it, sent all the way to the bottom, and then got genuinely good in the ring and worked his way to the top. Likewise, though less successfully, Chris Masters was another guy who was given a push because of his look, was way too green for it, sucked in the ring and got driven out of the company. He went away, worked really hard and actually became pretty decent in the ring before returning, unfortunately the reactions just weren't there because he hadn't done anything particularly memorable first time around. Of course there are others who have had great runs overseas - just check out Matt Bloom's stuff in Japan as Giant Bernard, he was great out there. Then they brought him back as Lord Tensai and it was a disaster.

That's it, Jones was carryable - but it had to be somebody really great to carry him. With some of these names, the main issue is the same old story with WWE under Vince - see promising star, push him too far too soon, ruin his career, see new shiny future star, push him too far too soon, ruin his career, rinse and repeat. Sometimes they'd get lucky and someone would be a natural and it would work, sometimes they'd get it right and save the push until the wrestler was truly ready for it, and that's how stars like Steve Austin, The Rock, Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, and John Cena were born. IMO if they'd held off on the big programs with guys like the Boogeyman, Great Khali, or Vladamir Koslov and let them simmer in the undercard and mid cards longer and let the fans either warm up to them or not, so we could see a more natural rise up the card, they'd have gone over much better for the role they were intended to be pushed for, and if they weren't main event material, they'd still be effective mid card acts to help other potential stars get over. If they did make it, they'd have had much more seasoning in the low and mid card roles and had time to develop their in ring skills enough to at least be credible in the upper card and main event space. IMO a good example of how to push a monster babyface is Goldberg. He had the charisma from day 1 to be the strong silent type, and Bishoff pushed him as that. Keeping his matches short so his inexperience wouldn't show too much, and when it did vs Regal, they were able to script around it by relaying that into a series with Jerry Flynn and make mat wresting his one small weakness where a wrestler can make the matches a bit more competitive, giving them an out to get Goldberg a few more competitive matches to give him a chance to develop his selling and chain wrestling skills, while the story of him being weaker at that then when he can use his fortitude to take blows and dish out his explosive offence to justify any awkwardness in the ring. Honestly, following through with that and booking a submission wrestler to be the one to finally break the streak would have been the smart way to go when that time came. But the main thing is, they gave him time in the undercard, doing squash matches to build him up sufficiently first. Once they did push Goldberg into the main event scene, he'd already become lightning in a bottle. Primed for success and the fans were more behind him then nearly anyone since the golden era of Hulkamania.

did you watch any of the past wrestlemania matches from the 24/7 live stream before wrestlemania on wwe's channel? it included some very old wrestlemania matches including the warrior and hogan, macho man and ted dibiase and man... i understand people seeing these old guys as pioneers of the business but when compared to todays athleticism and inring performance, EVERYONE was more show than anything else. macho man vs ted dibiase was one of the most boring matches i've ever seen tbh compared to todays matches. literally just scoop slam, scoop slam, sleeper hold, clothesline, elbow, scoop slam, sleeper hold. felt like i was in a sleeper hold myself, because i almost fell asleep watching that match. so yeah, hogan was also mostly a showman. roiding up the crowd, his no sell power up and again, the old school moveset of just punches, scoop slam or suplex and his leg drop (one of the worst finishers ever, but he thought that himself). the only one from that era you could argue was really good imo was ricky steamboat.
