Every now and then, it's fun to come back and revisit V1's rant about Becky's debut and think about how things went so incredibly well for her despite that horrific introduction to WWE.
46:13. Jay giving out about Sable reminds me of what Cornette once said: “I dont know what anyone got from putting a live mic infront of her but it should have been 3-5 years.”
Good, I'm not alone. Jackie was more attractive than most around that time I thought. She was also usually a better wrestler too, though that bar was admittedly low for that era.
Jacqueline was so under appreciated and a versatile performer. She was doing embarrassing angles down in memphis so I can see why she didn't care to bare it all.
This was the first OSW ep i ever saw, stumbled upon it and was hooked by the JBL impressions, skipped forward randomly just to land on Boy Stable chat... a winner was me.
WE'RE BACK! It's a special Brucie Bonus episode from the Attitude Era! Check out our super-cool new website @ OSWreview.com :D SPECIAL THANKS: Stephanie O'Donnell CrownofDonegal.com Chris ReloadLastSave.com Fizz portfizzio.blogspot.ie/ Daddy Doyle (lol) DaddyDoyle.com!
I realize I have no personal investment or involvement in Becky's current stardom. But it's so nice looking back at this episode and hearing V1 talking about an old friend who deserves better, and knowing that she finally got there.
So Sable basically said she didn't care about pro wrestling and it was only a stepping stone for her to do other things? Wow, her and Brock do belong together!
@meelf huntah woosh! It's a joke that works on different levels. First joke is that he is so bad at getting women that he tried something sketchy and "gets allegations". Next, it's a nod to VKM and his history of "allegations".
Watching this almost 5 years after it was posted...it's not only hilarious seeing the birth of the "boys stable" discussion, but also the sheer juxtaposition of Becky Lynch during her debut to where she is now...it's amazing.
Mike best sign I saw. Was some time after this show. After Y2J debuts, there was a sign that said something like “Chris Jericho is a fern gussy” no idea what it means. It was someone near the entrance ramp on the right hand side
At a local show, D’Lo made his entrance and I put up my ‘D’Lo stole my bike’ sign He climbed the corner, pointed at me, and said ‘yea! And I ain’t giving it back neither!’ But to be on topic: the best sign I saw was 1 of 2 1) X-PAC...easy in the steroids 2) I don’t even like Times New Roman (in regards to Roman reigns)
@@kingblue2646 I marked out so hard when he showed up for AEW's Casino Battle Royal. My Boy!! He's been resurrected! He's Zombie Boy! If they were really on the ball they'd have had him dress in black and called him Tobias Boon.
Becky Lynch went from Irish Stereotype Parody to the Female Stone Cold - talk about Luck o'the Irish (obviously not talking about Shamrock from Marvel Luck o'the Irish here)
The only gimmick that stuck really was The Undertaker. The Rock was Maivia, Stone Cold was the Ringmaster, HHH was well...Hunter H Helmsley, and the list goes on. Glad she stuck around to be The Man
@@anonymousperson4414 Becky Lynch isn't a piece of shit. She & the other 4 Horsewomen (both iterations: Becky herself, Charlotte & the Boss 'n Hug Connection AND those transferred from MMA, namely "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey, Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke & Shafir) are the most marketable talents on the 2 main rosters (barring NXT) & that, in itself, speaks volumes.
@@TherealRNOwwfpooh don't worry bout that dude. He just angry. Another attitude era mark that thinks nothing will ever be as good as that ever. But if you actually watch all of that era from start to finish you realize most of it was shit and people remember if nostalgia glasses on. If it wasn't for Austin, Rock, Foley, HBK at the start, that era had nothing but shit wrestlers and Jerry Springer gimmicks mixed with Howard Stern. Edgy shit for the sake of it. The matches were all shit. I can't think of one all time great match during the attitude era. Wrestling was the after thought and it was all about stupid storylines. Even Taker was garbage. Ministry Taker was awful. It's what trailer park kids would think was dark and edgy. Today's wrestlings blows it away by far. If the company allowed the guys and girls to make their own characters it would be so much better. Alot of the people their can make great characters cause they did it in other places including NXT but Vince ruins them. You think Vince wrote all Stone Colds or Rock's lines? No they did it themselves and created the characters we remember them for forever. They need to be allowed to do that again. They are wasting all that talent. From top to bottom, the roster has never been better in terms of pure talent and in ring skill then it is today. So it's sad to see it wasted. I can't watch WWE. I just keep up on it through RU-vid. I won't give them money or ratings until shit is fixed. I just watch NJPW. Only company I would pay to see cause they actually know how to tell stories properly and it's the best wrestling in the world. Anyone who thinks it's not is just in denial. Very rarely are you disappointed with matches in NJPW. Hopefully my favorite wrestler for the last ten years Ibushi, finally wins the title. He deserves it. Look for him and Okada to put on a classic during wrestle kingdom. NXT has the next best wrestling but only issue is I'm always worried when guys or girls get popular cause Vince will take them and ruin them.
Watching this back in 2022, its amazing how many bits all came from this one episode. Maybe one of my favorite episodes, though the "Damn it D-Lo" towed the line! Huge thanks for this approaching a decade later!
I can say with 100% confidence that they gave the heads out at this event. My source - ME! I was at this show and was in the front 6 rows (you can see me in the crowd at one point). Love OSW btw guys. I've been watching it non-stop!
LoL, that's me at 9.16 talking about Shane McMahon. The event was in 99' at the M.E.N arena in Manchester, No Mercy, if I can remember rightly half the roster stayed back in the U.S doing house showz and I was well pissed at not seeing the rock. We snuck into the Midland Hotel and had met all the wrestlers, it was pandemonium but I did have a great photo with Stone Cold, J.R, Gangrel and a few others. Amazing time to be a wrestling fan.
@Adam L if you could link any of those podcasts, I'd be eternally grateful! A bit of backstory to my 15 minutes, we were all congregating at the entrance to the MEN arena and the bloke from the QVC shopping channel was conducting the interviews with fans. By a stroke of luck I was stood in the right place at the right time and this QVC bloke grabbed me and asked me who I was looking forward to seeing and who I thought would win the main event....I thought everybody was going to say stone cold so I lied to the QVC guy and declared my love for Shane McMahon, just to be different...problem was the QVC guy had to do a 3 second countdown before I spoke, but I kept on interrupting him on 1 because I was excited and nervous. After 4 attempts the QVC guy said "right, if you don't get it right this time, I'm moving onto the next person"....luckily I got it right on my final attempt but I came across like a right dickhead because of the pressure and nerves.. An hour or so later me and my mates were in the arena and all of a sudden I popped up on the Titantron and my life there and then, became complete lol. Nearly as cringy as the Bulldog kid from Wembley 92'!
Edit. Another bit of trivia. The lad with the specs on that pops out from behind the goth chick with the massive tits at 9:12, That's The Whisk Guy from Come Dine With me
I have watched about 40 of their reviews, and I think your the first female who is actually watching old school wrestling and not only that but had a great comment. Nice!
Thanks for another great review brahs! Happy Days are always here when you do these reviews as I am recovering in the hospital at the moment and watching and listening to you guys is helping out very much
*plays 2nd **_Happy Days_** theme & inserts the OSW guys into the record backdrop in place of the sitcom's cast* So OSW is Deuce & Domino (the 1950's greaser gimmick used by the Smackdown tandem in the mid '00s)?
@DejaVoodooDoll She's not a tweener at all. She's clearly booked as a heel, just because a bunch of nerds in the crowd cheers for her doesn't make her a tweener.
@@MidwestMachete Actually, it does. WWE can't book credible faces to save their lives (see Bayley on main roster) & most heels get over because WWE can book baddies better than good guys anymore, it seems.
Steve Austin said on his podcast (there's a RU-vid audio clip somewhere) that the manhole was pretty deep (I believe he estimated 13 ft) and all they did was throw a few foam pads at the bottom, and that he fell a decent distance, and he took the bump like a champ. From what I can tell, they held on to him as long as possible and let go when only his feet were exposed.
yo i been watchin all these lately. im so glad i found yall. this brings back so many memories because i met a couple these guys before WWF from MCW here in maryland. im from baltimore my grandfather used to take me to events all the time as a kid. Axl Rotten, headbangers, so many dudes. some of the stuff you say i didnt kno. i like what im learnin from these too and fun to watch. good job guys 👍 OSFNW
for those wondering what J.O.B stood for, its "just over broke" but also an obvious nod to being jobbers. official members were al snow, blue meanie, Bob holly, scorpio, and Gillberg!
I got curious about why Snow and Blackman were called "Head Cheese." I couldn't remember why so I looked a bit to jog my memory. So it goes like this. Snow and Blackman got randomly teamed up like a lot of tag teams during the Attitude era and they were successful. Once they one they got a shot at the tag titles. Now that they were going to be a team Snow came to Blackman with a cape and suggested that they be called "Head Count" since Blackman had the personality of a deadman. Blackman's face showed he didn't like it so Snow came to him with a few different gimmicks. One of them was a wheel of cheese and he suggested "Head Cheese." Well again Blackman didn't like it but during their match the fans got behind them by chanting "Head Cheese." So that's the one that got over so that's the team name now. I know this a whole lot for a silly name on a video from a while ago but for the Blackman fans that are out there here's an explanation.
GOD!!! I really get chills with the Undertaker entrance at around 1:33:00 . Vince's commentary is actually *amazing* during that. He understands the character of the Undertaker so well. I love that entrance and any time we get heel commentary from Mr. McMahon.
Undoubtedly The Undertaker's best theme and entrance. As OOC alluded to, it is worth a topic on its own. Actually, the themes of the Attitude Era were a HUGE part of its success in my opinion. The Rock, Undertaker, Kane, Austin, HHH, DX, N.O.D., Mankind, Vince, heck even Test had awesome themes. Great memories!
When I visited New York we went to WWF New York and were watching the titantron videos because we couldn’t really see them anywhere (this was before RU-vid) and an employee of the store kicked us out of the store! They said we had to buy something! We were just watching it quietly!
I was not expecting this...eitherway, amazing work as always lads always showing much love to you all and all the time and effort you put into these each and every upload :)
Coming back to this show right after going through the WCW Warrior arc, I tripped out SO hard at V1 hitting the NWO theme at 53:15 almost exactly like he does in the current Warrior arc xD
Hilarious how the landscape of wrestling has changed compared to back in 2014. Another thing I might add is people still give X-Pac a lot of shit but looking back he was a pretty solid and entertaining worker. The thing that hurt him though was no matter the gimmick change or if he was heel or face he always had the same mannerisms much like Dolph Ziggler today.
As an American, I can tell you that we definitely DON'T eat most of those racist gimmicks up nearly as much as Vince's booking makes it seem. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it's just cringe-worthy. Especially ones as embarrassing as Becky Lynch's.
@JackgarPrime: Becky actually came up with the Irish jig dancer gimmick on her own, you know that, right? Luckily for her, she stopped the gimmick & became essentially the Merida of the Smackdown women's roster in terms of persona, except that Kevin Dunn hates her accent & refuses to let her succeed.
No she didn't come up with it herself. She was given it and intentionally sandbagged it by making it as ridiculous as possible. Gotta love wanna be smarks who have no idea what they are talking about.
If WWE ever struggles to push a character, they should go back and watch HHH during this match. This is Dec. 1998. By the time Wrestlemania 2000 comes along in a year and 4 months HHH will be a be a brand new wrestler. His look, his ring gear, his hair, his music, pretty much everything about him changed until they found something that worked. So WWE. If you don't know how to get someone over. Think HHH in 1999. Oh man. How do we get Kofi over as a singles star? Do what you did with HHH in 1999. Wow Shelton Benjamin's back and we need to put him in the main event. But he just isn't that good on the mic. Think HHH in 1999. Rinse and repeat.
The one thing I would love to see more of from OSW is the lip sync/voice over like Jay's "I hope you're happy" and (my favorite moment of all the reviews) "I got you a title shot!". I lose my shit any time it happens.
Jeff Jarrett is the Nickleback of professional wrestling: Not overtly bad, usually competent but completely unremarkable. Great wrestler my ass. If you can't manage to have a good feud with Kurt Angle, then the problem is you... or the booker. Point is, Jarrett is NOT great. Never was, never will be.
Then there's the whole case with nepotism being the only reason he ever made it in the industry, with his father being one of the most respected promoters in the history of wrestling but a lot of younger wrestlers tend to get by utilizing their family lineage, so it wouldn't be fair to only call out JJ... although that doesn't excuse him from booking himself as the world champion several times in his own company. Say would you want about HHH, at least he's charismatic and keeps his character consistent. Does that answer your inquiry on why people don't like Jarrett? I can give a lot more reasons if you have the time.
That doesn't take away from the fact that the overall talent of the man behind the angle can be summarized with the timeless expression... "meh" Putting aside my personal opinion towards the angles you mentioned (fantastic... pfft), even the most dense of men can strike gold if given the enough times and resources.
Ah! The Vince-a-roonie! I saw that in person and until that after the show DVD came out, I thought it was lost to time and the memories of the people in the Key Arena in Seattle. That was the first time I've seen it since it happened in August 2002.
Just a suggestion, but I think any future Attitude Era reviews would be better off concentrating on Raw episodes. They would give a lot more material to work with than the PPVs.
During the HHH vs Jeff Jarrett match.. I thought HHH was Edge. Jeeze, you can really see the growth in muscle mass when you see him now in more recent matches. It's like he "magically" spiked up 40-50 pounds.
agreed, she's attractive, although I wasn't a fan of her look in this match, I get the loose fitting shirt, but her hair looked awful here. The straight long black hair she had months before and the braids she wore while in PMS was a much better look for her.
Her face always looked tired/haggard and old looking without the makeup, like she's lived a really hard life. Plus her tattoos were always nasty looking
@@sainttrunks1982 exactly, IMO her time in memphis wasn't kind to her, you could tell how she rapidly aged during her 6+ year stint there from her debut to right before she left for wcw.
This episode is how I discovered & became a fan of Becky Lynch. I watched this 9 years ago & saw this & felt bad for her then a few months later I watched my first NXT PPV NXT Unstoppable in 2015 & Becky came out with the steampunk gimmick & bright orange hair & tore the house down with Sasha & I remembered this rant & it made me feel happy for her to overcome that debut & i've been a fan of her ever since & almost 10 years later she's become 1 of the biggest female wrestlers of all time. It's insane how far she's come even back to her Rebecca Knox days no wonder she has a book coming out this year.
So glad you loved Gangrel's theme. I used to love it too. Actually, the themes of the Attitude era you mentioned were all ones I thought were great too. Even Edge's first theme in the WWF wasn't that bad either. Speaking of themes, Do you remember Taka Michinoku's? it's one of my favs ever. WWE:Taka Michinoku Theme "Yamato Suite 4" WWE won't shell out for the license anymore in a lot of their DVDs. I think Taka brought the them over from Japan with him. Written and performed by someone famous apparently.
At 1:32:40 . SO glad you lads love this Taker entrance. For me, this is the best era for him, and by far and away his best music. Seriously, the Funeral March has literally nothing on this!!
Awesome review guys! I remember Channel 4 putting their PPV's at 1.40am after the Rumble fiasco. They heavily edited Backlash (blurred X-Pac's head after he was busted open and freezing the screen as Trish Stratus was being put through the table by Bubba Ray) showing the Big Show at the Rumble 2001 for a split second before it went to an ad break and showing an episode of Heat DURING King Of The Ring 2001 (Their last event was Vengeance 2001 btw). I cant wait for your next episodes.
So i just came back watching this video cuz I love what yall do but i have one beef. To qualify your spot, make weight and make the Olympic games is an accomplishment in of its own right, no matter how you finished
While he was injured, and did not do well during his Olympic run, Mark Henry was one of the most decorated lifters of all time and many in the sport consider him the best ever.
Steve Blackman did have a secondary submission finisher. It was a Guillotine Choke/Triangle Hold/Hell's Gate submission. His main finish was a Bicycle Kick/Martial Arts Kick/Running Pump Kick, though.
