Hmm. I got the answer right this time, but I am a little confused; is cutting the 8m less efficient than cutting the 35p shape? The 35p accepts 4 tiles, but that pair of 9p and the 788m shape accept 12 tiles; 8 from the 78m ryanmen and 4 from that 99p 88m shanpon. So wouldn't cutting the 8m be as efficient as cutting the 35p? Or am I missing something?

It’s true that 5p and 8m discard both yield the same number of acceptance. But if the 5p weren’t dora, the better efficiency play would be to drop the kanchan. Think about what happens when we draw 2m after cutting 8m. We would definitely want to drop the kanchan then, to make it a ryanmen-ryanmen 1-shanten. But if we had kept the 8m and instead cut 5p from this hand earlier, we’d have an 1-shanten hand with both ryanmen and an additional four tiles of acceptance from the shanpon. It’s called a “perfect 1-shanten”.

Right now the efficiency is the same, both wait on 28 tiles to iishanten, with 5 block you can have perfect iishanten, so you have better iishanten wait, with 6 block you have less better iishanten, only ryanmen-ryanmen, but more value on average since you can still wait on 4p
