WXIX Commercials produced circa 1970-73

I hope you guys enjoy these classics. I have been carrying them around for almost 40 years. There's a story behind each commercial. These represent the creative work of David Schackmann, Denny Christine, Denny Grayson, John Lyons, & Paul Saas as creative directors. The trade-outs are pretty obvious. Paul Nugent is probably responsible for those. There's a lot of Bill Ramsey in there. My favorite is my "dancing sofa beds" spot in which Ramsey did the choreography and Tom Von Hoene did the editing. (Von- Hoene- A-Tech.) The production managers were Tom Silberman, Denny Grayson and Bob Wolpert.. I think Wolpert shot the Glen Este film. The work of Bob Stothfang, Ty Clear, Rene' White, Rhonda Kramer and Larry Glazer is all in there. (Rhonda is the model and spokesperson in case you don't recognize her).
Also, check out the take on John Lyons when Cathy leaves the set in the "Passport to Pleasure" spot. And, of course, the dulcet tones of the greatest announcer and audio producer ever, Greg Eversull. They called him "Mario." I never knew why. Please comment freely on what you remember about these times. It was a "gas."

Mike Snyder I remember when WVUD switched their programming. We just got back from vacation and I turned on the radio in my bedroom. I yelled at my brother for “changing the station” and touching my stereo. Lol. I couldn’t for the life of me find “100 Rock” on the dial. And like that it was gone forever.

"Mario" is from Mario Andretti, Greg Eversull was a bit of a sports car buff. He had, at one time or another, a Triumph Spitfire, 2 Austin-Healey Sprites (Bugeye) that he restored, either a Triumph GT6 or MGB-GT (I can't remember which!) and maybe one or two that I forget! He got me interested in sports cars when he started dating my sister, whom he later married. He was also known as "Mr. Music" because of Romper Room.

Man, it's like '70s commercials were just stuck in that special spot between the standard '50s/'60s commercial formula (i.e. take like a minute and a half to explain what it's about) and the current formula (kitschy, gimmicky, effectively mindless). I honestly think it's a perfect balance. Also, I love this city. Been here for nearly a year now. So far, better than the Central Georgia region by a long shot. Just tried to look up that band, The Story, and didn't find any helpful info, just another band from the '90s with the same name. Shame they didn't seem to make it, I think they sounded kinda good.

Around 1976, when a was a teen, I bought a Sansui receiver along with a Pioneer turntable and speakers from the Swallen's in Whitehall. I wonder if that first commercial influenced my decision? Truly though the staff was very knowledgeable about what they sold. Always bought LP's there because of the selection and price. Still have the shrinkwrap on a few with the Swallens price.

When I was growing up ('60's) UHF broadcasting was pretty much limited to college stations...one of the early lures for cable TV was to get independent local channels like WXIX or WUAB (Channel 43/Cleveland, which carried the Indians' games) without having to get a separate UHF antenna--which often didn't get good reception anyhow...

The "new" Glen Este Speedway? My research concludes that they closed down in 1972. Did they try a relaunch elsewhere in another place in Union Township and failed? Or did they reconfigure the track before closing?

WXIX really didn't get into news programming until the late '80s. Before then, they would have a sort of 5 minute nightly news recap, where their house announcer would read the headlines with some sort of still graphic on screen. And of course there would be their buried-in-the-early-morning public affairs programming.
