Wyandotte Michigan Downtown

I went to downtown Wyandotte before a big snowstorm came through and shot some footage of the downtown area. I've always had the idea to do a series of documentaries about my hometown, Taylor, and the cities that surround it that make up the area called downriver. So, I went downtown to one of the cities in the downriver area and shot the river and the main strip for use in a later film. I decided to make a short film documenting that day downtown from the footage that I shot. Some of this footage may very well reappear in some other form in the future. There are some nice shots of the Detroit River partially frozen, which was another reason I took my camera down there. It's rare to see the river this way. Even in the winter.

I lived there as a child and each Saturday my dad would drop my brothers and I downtown at the theater and then we’d go to Woolworths after to the soda fountain. I’m 65 and in California now. Thanks for sparking these memories ❤

Jeff, have you done one on Southgate? My Hungarian nana lived on Netherwood until she passed in 1968, just a block off of Dix and I went to kindergarten at a very small school that was once around the corner on Burns. There was also a fountain/cafe at Dix that we would get to go to for ice cream. SUCH MEMORIES!!! ❤️

@@CK-831 Not sure I lived in San Francisco for a little bit but I doubt we’d know of each other that way. I have some relatives around here. Perhaps that how you know?

@@CK-831 I have not done anything on Southgate but I’m sure I will one day. Maybe I’ll hit all the downriver cities. For now I’m going to focus on doing a series/feature documentary on Taylor. I’m not sure yet but who knows maybe I’ll drop by Southgate one day and do a quick thing like this Wyandotte video. I’m pretty sure that ice cream stand still exists!

Wow, I just commented upon your video about Taylor, now I see this video about Wyandotte. Actually my entire family is rooted here. My grandparents, who immigrated to the States from Germany in the 1920s, moved to Wyandotte and started their new life there; my grandpa established Gouth Heeting and Sheet Metal, my mom and my two uncles were born in Wyandotte and grew up there, went to Roosevelt Highschool before studying at Wayne State University in Detroit, where my mom met my dad. My uncle to whom I referred in my comment on your Taylor video wrote some wonderful books about Wyandotte's history. A model of the totem pole which stands in the town center is here on my window sill in Germany and reminds me of my uncle George. We took him out dining at Portofino's restaurant near the waterfront when I visited my family last year. My parents moved to Germany shortly before my birth. Through my mother who always stayed an American citizen, I have dual citizenship, both German and American. I'm always wondering what my life could have been like if my parents had stayed in the US and in the Detroit metro area like the huge part of my family did. The house in 20th street where my family used to live is the address under which I register to vote as an absentee voter in US elections. Last year I saw every corner of Wyandotte you showed here in this video. It's so nice to see it all again! I love your video style: No comments, everything so still, just characteristic sights and views, creating a feeling of the town's personality. Thanks a lot!

Congratulations, Jeff! Best video of our dear Wyandotte that I have seen! Love the way you take it slow and give us time to digest what we see. I never saw the sea gulls ride the ice down the river before. You covered things so well. Living here, I knew all the locations. If I had friends or relatives out of the area watch it, I would love to have some captions identifying places. Again, congratulations! Look forward to seeing more from you!

Thank you very much! I've been kicking around the idea of doing little documentaries about the cities downriver. Maybe one day there will be more! Thanks again!
