I did not like that meeting, they are two worlds that cannot be reconciled. It seemed like Maalouf was challenging Marsalis. What I saw looked like a kind of combat.
So happy these two great trumpetists have found each other for that concert. I love them both and the Finnish Verneri Pohjola. Miles Davis, Chet Barker are also my favourites.

The other trumpet player opposite of the great wynton is playing some kind of improvisations in oriental styles, look at the way he s bending those notes . I notice his horn has 4 valves!
ça ressemblait à ces fanfares que l'on peut écouter chaque année à GUCA; rien à voir avec du jazz sauf quand WM jouait,ce qu'il a trop peu fait ce soir là!
J'ai eu la chance d'assister à ce concert d'antologie... Au début Wilton un peu effacer bien sûr Ibrahim (étant plus extraverti et aussi plus facile car il s'exprimait en Français) j'ai eu l'impression que pour Wilton il devait ressentir qu'il se faisait voler la vedette... Puis il y a eu les échanges de musiciens les bassistes ont échangé leur l'instrument, basse électrique avec la contrebasse puis la battle des batteurs car pour Wilton son orchestre est pur jazz New Orleans et pour Ibrahim plus "moderne" donc un choc de culture musicale, la New Orleans avec les sonorités orientales. L'harmonie était au rdv, ils se répondaient, jouaient au sens du jeux, c'était magique. Puis Ibrahim a expliqué sa première rencontre... Sa joie d'avoir lors de la semaine initié Wilton à sa Trompette quart de ton... Jusqu'au moment ou il lui en a offert une. Là le concert qui pourtant était déjà énorme deux poids lourds ensemble vous pouvez l'imaginer, mais là tout a changé, ils se sont libérés et c'est devenu extraordinaire. C'était le concert à ne pas rater. A l'affiche il y avait également Lucienne Renaudin en première partie. Que demander de plus quand on est un trompettiste amateur. Ibrahim si tu lis ce commentaire, pense à diffuser le DVD ou le CD de cette soirée je suis persuadé qu'il fera un tabac 😜. Merci encore pour ce fabuleux concert.
he is sure not familiar with this orientalic kind of music. but i think it's a question of preparation when you know you do a gig with maalouf und his music...
Wynton sounds great..I dig the way he works to listen and create space for everybody, plays the appropriate sound from his genre that matches the 'eastern' vibe, and every time he enters plays from a different approach of that genre. Not just the eastern modes, not just trumpet tricks,not just groove nor just to impress. Wynton passed those places in his ego a long time ago. He's making music not playing trumpet. Knowing his playing kind of well, I'd say he was playing from respect for the music and the bandstand more than being timid or out of his element..his gaze and demeanor appeared more like willingness to play WITH and communicate from the instrument.
@@NotesofNate , excellent reply. You truly understand his way of making music. Playing music, not trumpet. And I'm a bit surprised that some people found him "feeling uncomfortable" here.
I think Wynton don't care about playing this concert. For him this is no jazz and he knows he's was fooled on this encounter so he don't play. And Ibrahim clearly make his sound level louder than Wynton's to pass over. I found this scene highly disrespectful...

en tout cas tu a l'air d'en connaitre un rayon en musique , mais en terme de rayon fais du vélo ce sera mieux pour toi tu seras plus à l'aise au fait on peut te voir quand sur une scène avec un instrument pour nous expliquer comment donner des leçons
perdigat pour cela il aurait fallut que vous veniez voir quelques concerts de Nico Morelli, de Fred Couderq, de Brian Carter et j'en passe. Mais sait on jamais, peut-être m'avez vous déjà nourrit :-) allez bisous
On s’en fout de qui a gagné. ..... L’éternelle chamaillerie de qui a la plus longue ...du 4 eme piston, des quarts de tons, de la virtuosité, de telle ou telle influence ... on s’en balek. Juste deux musicos qui font un bœuf amélioré pour s’éclater. Le reste .... marketing, star system ... bof ..... on connaît ....
Don't be fooled..Wynton always gives the home slice homage.. Not unlike Jeff Beck, he never upstages the hometown heroes...Shit, Wynton could a pulled out that half Arturo Sandoval/half Freddie Hubbard shit... But the man's about how jazz can maintain it's unequalled commentary on the human condition...he left that heroe ball a long time ago
COMENTARIO PARA TROMPETISTAS.... esto fué una emboscada a Winton... hasta el baterista le hacia caras. está muy beneficiado ibrahim en el video con su equipo de gente y filmación , el ensamble musical es de ibrahim al 100% donde en tono burlesco sin sordina domina la micro tonalidad claramente mientras a winton solo le dijeron que tocara con la sordina haciendo esos supuestos movimientos microtonales del medio oriente que todos sabemos que el único que lo domina es ibrahim, si winton hubiera tocado nota limpia con su cosecha lo despedaza, enn fin no fué justo y lo expusieron donde todos deberíamos respetar a winton como lo mas cabrón del mundo pero admiramos a los nuevos talentos como Ibrahim por su puesto...
A Kumbaya moment for the festival organizers, but the truth is “pop” trumpet is not jazz trumpet. Need to do some homework, there’s a legacy of Armstrong, Eldridge, Gillespie, Miles, Brownie, Dorham, Hubbard, Cherry, Shaw. etc. Takes more than playing over a Phrygian mode groove to demonstrate jazz artistry.
STFU you clearly know nothing beyond age-old Bebop. Ibrahim can play bebop/modern jazz and Arabic music at a high level while you can only be a mediocre bebop player who tries to be "hip" the same tired old tunes and harmonic concepts. Each one of those guys would most likely have respect for Ibrahim if they were still alive.
This kind of jazz-purist elitism is really obnoxious and off-putting to most people. Just because Ibrahim doesn’t constrict himself to playing exactly in the style of past Western jazz legends, doesn’t mean he isn’t “demonstrating jazz artistry.” Jazz shouldn’t just be about living in the past
Alphonse Daudet ce concert n'est pas une composition des deux trompettistes mais un hommage à un musicien, donc peut-être faudrait-il faire le reproche à cet autre musicien ?
