I still listen. It is still a huge part of life for me. As other X albums. Never ending stories . We grow and we relate. This can be painful. But that is life and I was blessed with Grandparents who loved us kids. Music was a big deal. My Granma,... maternal grandmother. Painted and sang and wrote things Pops was a Native American Korean war Veteran. But FUNNY! And very wise and very special! He looked after us all. My actual father was an amazing musician. His father too . I got hung up on X at about 17. And Kerouac and y own way of being. But still hanging on to my Grandparents ' way. I am blessed. I am thankful. For them. And always for X. I still write. I still play things. God is Good all the time, baby! X forever LOVE YOU ALL. 🙏🌹
I'm still amazed at how many people I speak to who profess to "know a lot about music" and have musical taste who have never heard of or listened to X. This band is one of the most important and seminal bands to ever come out of LA. Their creative and spiritual connection to the Doors. among other bands is part of what makes them so special and unique. Their compelling mixture of punk, country, roots and classic rock makes them stand out from the crowd. Saw them at the Whiskey in '84, saw them in Ventura in 2013, will see them again and again and will always be hypnotized by their unique artistry.
Never heard of em...Nah, just kidding. Saw them in 1986 for the first time when I was 16. Not a good show, but the amazing 1987 Universal Ampitheater show (w/ an incredible fIREHOSE and Jerry Lee Lewis opening for them) was a legendary concert. Stunning sound. Exene was very pregnant. Tony Gilkyson was scorching on guitar.
He admitted in an interview that his schtick, which was to play difficult guitar pieces while standing like a statue and making it look easy, was done to mock other guitarists of that era who gyrated around the stage
greatest band to come out of LA’s punk & music scene. their sound is timeless. Exene is a GODDESS. Billy’s guitar sound is one of a kind (and that angelic smile? swoon!) John Doe - no one cooler. and DJ killed it.
Alphabetland was the first new CD I bought when I moved to Portland in 2020. So thenkful I got this as it reminded me just how much and for how long I have loved X. They still kick so much ass and I am looking forward to seeing them next month!
Pivotal album by one of the best LA bands ever. Lucky enough to see them a few times, back in the day, then at Coachella (I believe that was a reunion gig?), then at a John Doe show at Pappy & Harriet's a couple years back. They crafted a sound that many bands took as inspiration later. Oddly under appreciated.
Calling the album "Los Angeles" was perfect, since it perfectly encapsulated life in LA at the time. "You're Phone's Off the Hook..." described LA style social interaction perfectly, "Nausea" was the definitive morning-after-a-party experience, and "Sex And Dying in High Society" told you all you need to know about being rich and famous. I can't think of another record album that summed up life in a city so well
Billy Zoom... Oh, Billy, you legend, you should be in caricatures. When I first got into X, you reminded me of Artie from Scottish kids group The Singing Kettle. Watching this video, in the clip of you at 1:34, you remind me of Rob Halford. You play so greatly, and I love how you smile when you play. Please come to the UK to play!
Already had the White Girl single,..so The day this came out,.I was 13,.I biked 8 miles got the Vinyl,.on the way home hit a pothole and ate shit,.bloody n bruised.the album survived without a scratch.☠️🖤X
The very first concert I ever attended was X. I couldn’t believe my parents let me go. I was 13. I stood in front of the speaker bouncing up and down and the smile never left my face. It was awesome and one of my happiest memories.
How time flies. Saw them on the LA 25th Anniversary tour with Rollins Band opening and it was wonderful. My wife, a huge fan who had seen them in a small club in Houston in the early'80s, introduced me to their music. When I asked her to compare the two performances, she said, "They can play their instruments a lot better now," lol. 25 years of gigging will do that. Now 43 years ... boy I hope I can see them again.
Happy 40th, John, Exene, DJ and Billy!!! So *hard* to pick ONE favorite off this seminal album... but if I'm pressed, I have to go with "Your Phone's Off the Hook (But You're Not)"!!! And then, I'll change my mind again....
Excellent footage and sound. X will always be my favorite punk band. They were so much more. Like The Ramones, they were all more versatile than I thought as a teen.
I was born in 78, pretty much was born into everything 10 years earlier skateboarding and punk is my life luckily the dudes I looked up to pushed me to earn my grinds. This is it, life and X
As a child of the 60's and 70's and a young adult of the awesome 80's I can say without a doubt that this was my Punk Band. I just love the slightly off key duets and the band as a whole were just rockin'. Nothing compares and I am glad. I only with we could literally go back in time. I know, look to the future...nah.
this band was my youth i cant even count how many shows ive seen but every time was different all amazing and unique ,, the one that sticks out was X and the Remones at The Bacchanal in San Diego on the way to Mex, to go surf ,, at this point all the old punk bands were cool with each other ,, those were certainly some fun and free daze
I saw X live at a music festival in 2009, I was working at it and what I noticed was members of other bands such as The Breeders and Shellac coming behind the PA to watch. Clearly one of those bands who were massively influential rather than successful.
Always felt the connection between X and the Doors. Doors songs like Land Ho and Cars Hiss by My Window almost sound like proto-X which is crazy I know but I just feel it when I hear them.
Nobody , but Nobody better give this Video even a half of a Thumb's Down , because if you Do , I'll send Top Jimmy's Ghost Down From The Heaven's to Thump Your Ass ......! X RULE THE WORLD , O. K. ???? End of Discussion............
Any chance of uploading or offering on x website the early live footage It sounds and looks amazing Also x should sell bandana and posters again on website Thanks for changing my life
Couldn’t get enough X growing up… went to a recent farewell tour date and disgusted to hear them adjust lyrics to “avoid offense”. Went from being counter-establishment to compliant.
Billy is right, Johnny Hit and Run Paulene is the best song on the first album. Just for his guitar intro alone. That Chuck Berry riff played at 99 mph! (Your mileage may vary, but not by much!)
