X AIR How To: Sending FX to Monitors (X AIR EDIT) 

I had exactly the same issue - we were doing a monitor check and couldn't get effects via the Aux outs - now I know why!

Where's the insert button? I don't see it anywhere

I think if you go to the I/O tab you can select the point at which the USB send is tapped.

This is how I do it, too...pre-fader.

Have you tried the Gated Reverb and set the gate to close at the level of repeat echo you want to eliminate?

Since your monitor inears are mono there is no way of doing that. If you want that effect you have to use two buses to get stereo monitoring.

To send an input channel to any Aux you need to select the Aux channel by clicking on the button on the bottom RHS of the X-Air Edit screen. All of the input faders will then have a coloured line around each: this colour matches the colour chosen for that Aux (you can easily change these colours) This shows that all of the input faders positions refer to the mix that you want to send to that Aux (it is important to note that this has NO effect on the amount of each input being sent to the main LR mix: you are only setting up a different mix for that Aux) When you click on the Main LR button the coloured lines around the input faders will disappear, showing that you are back to mixing the main LR signal. The same process is used to send any of the input signals to an Fx module: select the required Fx button; the input channel faders will now have a different coloured band around each, showing that you are sending to that Effect module. There is an important difference between Aux Sends and Fx Sends: while you can consider both as extra "mixers within your mixer", the mix that you have set up for the Fx module has an additional Fader to adjust the overall level of that Fx Send mix actually getting into the Fx module. This "Fx Send Master Fader" is not visible on the top layer of X-Air Edit; you can however access it using the Utility button and selecting one of the User buttons. This can then be configured to contain any of the input and/or output faders: you need to select all 4 of the Fx Send buttons (I also select the 4 Fx Return buttons, but you can choose whichever buttons suit your needs) The Fx Send Master Faders names will be labelled in dark blue (the Fx Return faders are green by default: these are the faders which appear immediately to the RHS of the Aux 17/18 input fader) The important thing to realise here is that even if you have 'Sent' some input channels to the Fx module, none of that signal will actually be processed by it if the Fx Master fader is fully down! You should set this at the 0 dB position i.e. whatever level of each input signal you send to the module with actually get into the Fx module. You then set the amount of the Fx module output that you want to add to your Main LR mix or Aux, by adjusting the level of the green Fx Return faders . You can even program one of the Mute buttons to temporarily switch OFF the effect, usually done when the artist is talking between songs. I'd recommend that the Mute should just switch OFF the Fx Send, and not the Fx Return, as this will allow any reverb etc to fade-out naturally when muted, instead of cutting out instantly. Sorry this is so long-winded, but so many people have problem with effects, which are often due to them not realising that the signal path is: Input ch SEND to Fx; adjust Fx SEND Master Fader; adjust Fx Return Fader. Note that normally it is best to have the effect SENDS as Post Fader so that the amount of the effext follows the actual input signal fader; Aux'es however will normally be Pre-Fader, as you're artists won't want their Foldback mixes changing as you mix the Main LR (FOH) signal. Hope that this helps.

You can either send your 1 input to 4 effects and then return the effects to the master bus or the aux bus and just leave the input signal out at the end. Or you can use insert mode with each effect

What do you mean "send channel 1 to aux"? In this video they use "aux" to mean "bus" and monitor. If you want to send channel 1 to bus 1-> click "bus 1" tab-> bring up master fader bus 1-> bring up channel 1 fader On the mixer "Aux" (in red) refers to 1/4 inch cable input channel 17/18. You can send channel 1 there in routing matrix, but I'm not sure that's what you want?

@@URBANALOGUE thanks man. I figured it out somewhat. I had no idea that bus and aux was the same thing

I have my system setup so that BUS1 is foldback. Now I can click bus1 and separately EQ foldback sound and fx seperate from FROH this means that at anytime I can increase the amount of volume or fx to a given singers foldback if they want more or less of each.

This can be done with the XR18 yes. On all Aux outs (monitor outs) you can have different mixes, with reverbs included, you have 8 stereo effects to play with ontop of all the standard channel dynamics/eq etc.

Same here and I note there is never an answer to questions on here. It Should be a no brainer to send effects to the main outs, why would you not want this!!!!
