hello there. I'm from Malaysia one of the southeast nation in Asia. Japan culture is not foreign here since all the manga and anime way back from 80s had reached here. However I must say that Japanese music (be it rock or pop or ballad) are extremely unique and original in it's own way. I listened to a lot, from american to brits to swedish to german and of course to my own local music but there's something special about Japanese music (especially J rock). I really wish that one day i have the chance to go to Japan!

This comment is quite old... But I thought it was an interesting question, and only one other person replied. So I'll reply anyway lol I grew up with a lot of anime. By the time I was 10 years old I'd seen, among others, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Tekkaman Blade, Akira, and Evangelion (maybe I was a little too young for those last two...). Some of them were heavily changed for localization, but not all of them were, especially the last two. I think that kind of prepared me by exposing me to Japanese names, towns, and a few concepts early in life. I was also a big fan of heavy metal already, especially Iron Maiden and Blind Guardian. An older friend recommended X Japan to me, the first song I heard was Drain and I loved it immediately. It's very reminiscent of early American and British heavy metal, trash, and power metal, but in a VERY different and distinct direction. I also really loved Blue Blood and Dahlia. At one point I found an actual physical Art of Life CD in a record store, and I think I cried the first time I listened to it. So basically, no, I didn't find it strange. Anime prepared me a little for the language and US/UK metal prepared me for the sound. But it was also different enough to be very exciting. Even today I still love X Japan and a few other Japanese bands like Dir en Grey and L'Arc en Ciel. Hopefully that's an interesting reply, if this account is even still active.
