This channel is great! This is just what I am looking to learn and it’s explained and shown so clearly. Thanks Peter! I love long videos and hair splitting! We can always watch on 1.5 speed! Keep it up!

I understand these long-form videos might not be appealing to everyone but I find them very interesting and informative. Lots of important tips are given along the way that will benefit the person undertaking this project themselves so they will not have to redo/rework certain steps. Speakers look great! Thanks!

With the screw holes on my electric guitar pickguards, i run the screws in, take them out and apply a bit of superglue in the holes, let it dry, this reinforces the hole by basically turning it into a wood fiber reinforced composite. Then when you come to finally fit, counter rotate the screw a little before screwing it in, to pickup the the act thread alignment again. This works well for where you envisage removing screws later. And avoids wrecking the wood and losing grip on the screw

Stephen, that's a good technique for sure and I've done the same. Even tapped machine screw threads in MDF! Thanks for pointing it out.

This is all fantastic. Thank you Peter. I'll be looking to veneer my encores soon and this has been very valuable information.

I didn't read all the comments below, so probably someone already made this suggestion and if so, just ignore. But if not, here goes: At around 7:00 minutes in, you were talking about the problem of having two separate cases in inventory because of the difference in depth for the speaker if it were painted versus veneer. In order to keep from having to tool two different cases for the speaker depth, I would suggest that you add in all your kits a makeup gasket at about the thickness as the veneer. Then everyone would have their choice as to veneer or paint. In fact, someone might initially paint the speaker box and later decide to veneer. With the gasket and assuming they kept it, they could go back and veneer it, thus essentially having it both ways. Just a suggestion and would definitely keep you cost and inventory down, as you would only have to make one box that would work for both situations. I am sure a spacer gasket could be made very cheaply. Only question is would it affect the sound, but that would be your expertise and not mine. Also, thanks for the videos. They are extremely helpful and well produced. Note: Guess you did already answer the question as I did finally go down and read the comments. But I left mine anyway. I would also just make a gasket out of the veneer.

I did a high gloss clear lacquer finish on a pair of similar sized bookshelf speakers. Took me a month and more than 20 cans of aerosol lacquer. The veneer can absorb alot of lacquer before it starts building up.

Wonderful videos! I think that your philosophy of work is correct. It may not be for everyone but to those that would care about a product like this they should and probably do care. That doesn’t mean that your videos all need to be one hour (give or take), and I think you understand that, but as you continue to be behind the camera you’ll find the best ratio for yourself and your style that you think is appropriate and that will more accurately portray your ideas. Cheers to more great videos like these!

Hello, Bill from France, interesting, detailed videos ! Just a question, what’s your take on quality plywood ( Baltic birch, for example) ?
@carbidetooth
@carbidetooth 4 года назад
Big subject, Bill. Lots of advocates on both sides of the Baltic Birch vs MDF question, which I assume is some of what you're asking. I really don't have a bias for sonic properties of either, so it boils down to other attributes such as workability, appearance and cost. I use both and choose based on suitability for the project at hand.

The long form videos are great. I'd rather have too much info than not enough. Sometimes you go into more detail then I need since I've done a fair amount of woodworking but I can always fast forward those bits. For someone that's new to woodworking those might be valuable bits. One of the things I've learned from helping guys in AVS's DIY section is that what I consider to be over explaining is often under explaining to someone new. :) So I've taken to try to give extra info when I can, especially on safety stuff. Most guys don't realize how bad something like MDF dust is to breath and it's good to give those reminders. As for changing the cut depth for veneering I'd say leave it as is. I'd rather have the flexibility to change my mind on how I'm going to finish them.

Why not add extra shims to veneer kits?
@carbidetooth
@carbidetooth 3 года назад
I considered it, but it's problematic in a number of ways. Veneer is not all the same thickness, so I'd be guessing at best. If I were to manufacture a multiple shim pack that would cover most possibilities, it would raise the cost of my kits significantly. Further, many don't know how they're going to finish cabinets at the ordering stage...veneer vs. paint, etc. I've had many tell me that cutting shims from veneer they used worked well and it's what I do when I build out cabinets. Turns out I was postulating on something that hasn't proven to be a concern.

@@carbidetooth sounds like a final assembly issue, where aligning the tweeter faceplate exactly flush will require a somewhat 'custom' approach. I have had limited success in using a gasket that has some compression to align, but if too much compression, then the faceplate can deform. Thanks!

Again Great instruction. Time dose not matter we can always pause. Thanks for the extra work. Do you have a set of these speakers? If so what do you think of the sound?
@carbidetooth
@carbidetooth 4 года назад
Thanks you for saying that, Kerry. Besides the stack of flat packs on my shelves, I just today completed yet another pair of the X-LSs. They're breaking in as I write this. Understand I'm an audio nerd with a speaker obsession. X-LS Encores may not be the last word in all respects, but I'm always kind of amazed at what they do well. I'm reminded of the Hippocratic Oath, "first, do no harm". They shine at letting a recording come through as recorded. They're well balanced and mostly neutral, with bass performance that belies their size. Is that helpful?

@@carbidetooth Are you familiar with Klipsch? I have RF-7III fronts and was thinking of building these for my surrounds but I'm not sure how well they'll match. Any thoughts on it?
@carbidetooth
@carbidetooth 4 года назад
@@DesertILI I haven't heard that Klipsch, but I know the X-LS is pretty neutral. In my experience the rear surrounds aren't near as critical as the main/center relationship.

If you go with veneer, do you reduce by 10 or 20 or 30 mils? Everybody who uses veneer has some thin wood exactly the right thickness to make a gasket to put under the tweeter.
@carbidetooth
@carbidetooth 4 года назад
It has proven to be a non-issue for the reason you describe. More about me puzzling through all the possibilities, I suppose.

Why instead of politely expressing an opinion you prefer to be rude? I find Peter's videos to be very informative, I discovered him just yesterday. Sure videos are long but that's how he likes it, up to you whether to watch them or to go elsewhere. If you have any suggestions I'm sure he'll be open to consider them. By the way, it's "too much".
