I'm only 22, so by the time I got to reading comics this was long over; but when I was a kid my dad gave me all his old comics and really all he read was X-Men and he had a lot of this stuff. That, and my step-dad recorded a lot of the animated series, so I grew up on that too. Long story short, this is my X-Men
I just tracked down the ghost rider back issues that went with X-Men 10 and reread that story line. Ghost Rider becoming infected by the brood was amazing.
I loved these XMen stories when I was a kid in the 90s when they started XMen over again with Jim Lee I bought almost all the covers. I wanted to get a framed pic with that cover. Plus they added Omega Red I hope we see him at some point in the MCU.
This volume is pure nostalgia to me, taking me back to 2nd and 3rd grade...probably don't even need to read it since I read these so many times as a kid.
I remember reading these in my friend at the time Lajohn's brothers room when my mom was stationed in Kentucky. He hated us being in his room reading his comics. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
When these came out, I was in high school and fully on board. The hyper for this was real. After Jim Lee and Claremont left, that's was the beginning of the end of the X-Men for me. They were my GOAT's. They still are.
I'd just turned 14 and was about to start my freshman year of high school when _X-Men_ #1 came out in August, 1991 (like just a couple weeks before the year began), and MY GOD the hype for this WAS INDEED real. Nothing else even came close for my buddies and I throughout that year, in terms of what we relentlessly, breathlessly talked about both at school, on the bus during extracurricular trips, etc. Jim Lee's X-Men ruled the entire fucking universe during that time period (along with Whilce's Uncanny X-Men, Peter David's X-Factor, and Liefeld's X-Force), and there was always something brand-new and exciting to discuss up through the mid-1992 departure of the Image-guys to their own company. And this Omnibus in particular is the book that got me into Omnibus-collecting, a couple years ago. So much incredible material here, and high school was the absolute-perfect time for all of this to come together in my life.
My daughter had a survey class on the X-Men from 1963 to today in college. She really liked this run the best. I'll need to get her this omni on the reprint. I hope they include those posters. THANKS for sharing!
The basketball game in X-Men 4 is fun, great Omnibus! I can see the benefit of reading these versus individual comic issues, definitely helps with the continuity
The whole time I was thinking to myself : “Alright, nice. Sooo is vol. 1 worth getting as well or nah?” Glad you touched up on that at the end! And happy to see you enjoyed this one much more :)
Yooooooooooooooo GEM that’s a dope book can’t wait for the reprint deft getting it!! Always a good vid and keep them coming !! Hope all is well with you and the fam!!
Claremont had a stellar 16 year run on X-Men ... almost became one of the Image founders with Jim Lee and Portacio ... Chris with the bad boys of Image 🤯
Wow man! Thank you for doing this and bringing me back! I forgot about these and how much I loved them as a kid! These came out when I was around 12, maybe 13 and it was a huge deal and I remember being just blown away by everything, the art, the story, omega red was such a cool looking character and I had never seen him before and also magneto looked so cool, everything looked awesome, I feel like it was a jump forward in art for comics and stories. Sadly my mother burned all my comics and toys and anything from my childhood (it’s a long story) but you reminded me of how much I loved these and I just bought the omnibus right now because of you. So thank you. I can’t wait to dive in and reminisce! And the best part? No one can take this one away from me! THANK YOU! By the way, where are you from? I was gonna guess East coast and you just seem like a hard core fan, agnostic, mad ball, cro mags…. Just curious, I’m a grown up punk rocker/metal head from Cali and it’s cool to see someone around my age I’m guessing, you’re probably younger haha so no offense, that I can relate to it seems like, into comics! I appreciate that! Awesome video! Thanks again for the stroll down memory lane!
I came here to see the omnibus and debate if I wanted to get one but then I realized I have most of these books if not all of them locked in a safe back at my dads house. Now I just want to go home to Michigan and visit my dad while reading these books again. I'm still probably going to try and get the Omnibus once things settle but thanks for the trip down memory lane. These were the stories I grew up on and treasure today. I've left comics over a decade ago seeing how there was too much social and political commentary being forced into them while story and character development was forced out. I can't get behind superheroes that have tiktok accounts and social media clout when that was never what X-Men, Avengers, Justice League or any of them were EVER about. Seeing the X-Men of today makes me cringe because I've never know Cyclops or Wolverine to get along unless there were major events outside of that they weren't the best of friends let alone "lovers?" WTF is going on? And last I heard they were some kind of segregationist? When, why, HOW?! Anyway ... enough of that. Thanks for the trip I'll always cherish the X-Men of yore. Maybe things will change maybe not but comics to me are never going to be as good as those days.
I own all of these individual issues, as many have said it was the comics that got me into comics, I would really like to get both volumes of this Omnibus. Thank you for the look through.
old school stuff and our boy Whilce! love it. I grew up following Jim Lee's art and i still do it in most of my illustrations. Jim Lee style has more lines/crosshatchings while Whilce's style has more darks. thanks for the vid
I look forward to reading this when it reprints. I read the new Xmen series back in the day, but I dont remember it at all, and vaguely remember being confused by it. Still, gotta have it.
Helpful overview, seems like a good collection. I have Mutant Genesis in tpb form, so X-Men 1-7, is this worth getting for the X-Factor and Uncanny X-Men issues?
Hey Gem, you are correct X-Men #1 was huge. It is still the best selling comic of all time selling more than 8 million copies! During an interview with Todd McFarlane he stated that artist were making 4% of comic sales during that time period. At the cover price of $1.50 not including the gatefold cover because it was more than double the price Jim Lee made a rough $480,000 off one issue of X-Men. I do think that Whilce Portacios' iceman is one of the best styles I've seen to date, very surprised that nobody has done a statue based on his art.
After almost 30 years I can still remember mostly if not all the artwork from Jim Lee's run, but I can't remember some of the art from recent comics.Tells me about how legendary those runs were in the 90s.
Dope overview. This is my very first omnibus that I bought off of IST. I have this collection in single issues. Omega Red, one of my favorite villains.
I wish all omnis had cool extras like that. I'm almost finished with my first omni, Guardians Solo Classics, and it has been a chore. I think I've been at it for almost a year.
This is my favorite all-time best comic (graphic novel). Not only because it is done by Mr. Jim Lee and Chris Claremont...but because of Mr. Whilce Portacio. Until now, I am still looking for a copy of this book. I hope you can help me :-) Your new subscriber from the Philippines.
I'm really feeling like I want to start reading X-Men. I read the debut issue in my Marvel Firsts tpb the other day and now I want to read the original run. Great video as always! Omni vids are my favorite
I've got about 6 years worth of material to read before I get to this omni (Doing an epic read-through from the start of Claremont's run to the modern age + all tie-ins) but this is 90's goodness I'm looking forward to!
