Check out the XAG V40 spray drone at a cherry orchard. Although this video is short, you can see the spray pattern and canopy penetration. Why the blue dye? This is a clip from a field study that was done for fungicide applications in orchards. A few other things to note about what you're seeing from the V40
1) Typically over row crops, you'd fly a spraying drone with a much wider swath - however, in dense canopies (and orchards) where you're using a fungicide (with higher volumes than a herbicide), you'll have more thorough coverage by flying down each row.
2) Why fly down the center versus on top of the trees? This depends on the aircraft, but since the XAG V40 was made specifically for canopy penetration (really great in orchards and vineyards), the spray systems are positioned pointing out and down at its sides, so being in the middle of the row allows most of the product to be captured on target.
3) What about drift? You'll notice very little offsite movement, even though we were flying about 3ft higher than we normally would have. This is due to the propeller downwash and the canopy capture. We were using a 100micron droplet setting - in applications, we would have turned that up closer to 160-200 (depending on label) to mitigate drift as needed.
