The Varnus Organ Hall needs your help. We are asking the community's support to restoring and operating Varnus Hall, Canada's only private organ concert venue owned by Xaver Varnus, to provide a worthy home for organists, famous artists and young talent alike, from around the world to perform, and broadcast their concerts online. We are grateful to you if you can help our work with any donations. ca.gofundme.com/f/fundraising...
Xaver Varnus' first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Debussy. He has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in Bach's Thomaskirche in Leipzig (2014), Berliner Dom (2013), Notre-Dame (1981), Saint-Sulpice (2006) and Saint-Eustache (1996) in Paris, National Shrine in Washington, D.C. (1985), and Canterbury Cathedral (2004), as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia (1985). His Quadruple Platinum Disc winning album From Ravel to Vangelis (SONY, 2007), is the best-selling organ CD ever. As a Canadian citizen, Xaver Varnus resides in Berlin and Toronto. "Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould" (The Globe & Mail, Canada's National Newspaper). "He is one of the most influential figure in organ music in the early twenty-first century." (Mark Wigmore, The New Classical FM, Canada).

Although Bach’s best-known organ work is the toccata and fugue in D minor, many music historians dispute whether this work was indeed composed by Bach, since a manuscript written by his own hand has not survived to posterity. Devoted Bach fans know that Bach composed another toccata in D minor for organ, known as the “Dorian“ Toccata BWV 538. It is called Dorian, because it is notated in D minor without any flats in the key signature, along the lines of the dorian mode. The first performer of this masterpiece after rediscovery was Felix Mendelssohn, who knew the Dorian not as a toccata but as a prelude. We may conclude this from a letter written to his family in 1831 in which Mendelssohn requests to be sent copies of six different Bach organ works, including a “Prelude and Fugue in D Minor,“ which he identifies by notating the first two beats of the Dorian Toccata. Moreover, Felix at some point acquired a manuscript of the Dorian in the hand of the violinist Eduard Rietz, titled "Preludio e Fuga di Giov: Seb: Bach." Rietz, who died in 1832, was a Bach enthusiast and close friend of the Mendelssohns as well as being a professional music copyist. According to Fanny Mendelssohn’s catalogue, three of the Bach organ manuscripts that had been acquired by the Mendelssohns between 1823 and 1825 were copies by Rietz that he had donated to the family. It seems likely, then, that Rietz had also donated to the Mendelssohns his copy of the Dorian, and that Felix adopted the title of the work found in this manuscript. An exciting, dynamically rhythmical work, it concludes, like many toccatas, with an extended low pedal D and a majestic Buxtehude-like gesture for full organ.
This work was played with dignity and at a slower pace by the Mendelssohn generation. According to the research of Wim Winters, the paces of both Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert, and Baroque authors were much slower. Only the virtuoso madness of the second half of the 19th century accelerated the tempo of the works, often distorting the logic of the harmony. The vanity of virtuosity destroys Bach’s music. There is too much electricity power and digital age in the contemporary Bach playing with too little silence from a long lost horse-driven society. At the end of Beethoven's life, the steam train was invented. Stephenson's 'Rocket' of 1830 travelled at just 40 km/h but some people thought this was dangerously fast and would not take the risk of going at such an unnaturally fast speed. It seems that people's perception of time has changed. If true, and given that theories concerning the Tactus are correct we can demonstrably hear that the original baroque and early romantic paces are in fact too slow for many people in 2020.

I´m glad to read that you feel that, somehow, some modern tempi are unapropriately fast. I´ve always felt that way. A friend of mine used to say that Bach had written "I compose for the glory of God and leisure of the reason". I just can't enjoy a music that my reason cannot comprehend. Thanks for your music. Bye the way, I tell this: you are indeed a virtuoso, but your gestures, your body language are sober. I guess Johan Sebastian didn't use to bang his head when performing. Thanks once more. All the best for you.

A common theme through the works performed by Varnus seems to be a slowed down tempo, for which I am grateful. It lends another layer of majesty to the music delivered to my grateful ears.

So, finally.... *THIS IS IT* ! Here they are : *The " Lost Harmonies "* ! ( THESE harmonies that you just can't hear when an organist plays this wonderful piece of music in the usual way nowadays.... ) Thank you very much, Xaver, for this extraordinary and wonderful performance !

It's very clear, from this remarkable and unique performance, that we are hearing an extraordinary piece. I cannot express adequately how much I appreciate the clarity and depth of this performance. Too often this work has been the expression only of the virtuosity of the performer, but not so here. Soli Deo Gloria.

For me, BWV 538 was always the most beautiful piece for pipe organ i have ever heard. Untill today, Karl Richters performance was my absolute favorite, now i'm not so sure anymore. Would love to hear fugue played by maestro Varnus too, i'm sure it would be sublime. Thank you for this performance :)

I felt the same about this piece. In my case Helmut Walcha was the performer. For me, back in the 1960s, it was a rare treat to hear any performances of Bach's organ works. Now we are spoilt for choice. It is wonderful however that we are able to re-visit these early recordings that have all been re-issued in box set DVDs. Walcha remains my favourite exponent of Bach, but Richter's recordings are also superb. His performance of the Sonata BWV 529 from the Jaegersborg Church in Copenhagen is exquisite.

Weiterso ...

I see much merit in Wim Winters' theory, that proves beyond reasonable doubt, that tempi in former times were slower than those we have become used to, e.g., Cochereau in the 1950s was funereal compared to the Koopman sewing machine one generation later. Look for poem 'Leisure' by Welsh poet Davies.

I feel bad, looking at his hands and seeing so many blown out joints from playing. My mom has one joint that looks like his and it gives her pain and limits her use of the finger a bit.. Even his hands show how much Xaver loves the organ.

I like the slower than usual tempo, but this should give time for more articulation and non-legato playing. Can you be sure that Mendelssohn always played everything legato?

What about the birds? Their tempi are so fast in the summer, I think several composers got ideas from them.If the birds' songs were that fast that time in Bach's and Mendelsson's life, they could play that fast too, because they could have the perception and knlowledge of this fast tempo, and the idea of playing slower that time could be a mistake. Or maybe the birds' songs have become quicker since then, but this is hardly true, since they are singing much faster now in the summer then any of the songs or the tempi of the people. Just listen them! :) And try to answer..😉

Yes, Mendelsohn, music genius and one of best composers, would definitely play without any emotions and any agogic. There is already in Austria so called Orgelautomat, that accompanies songs for conngreagation without organist, you could just program it for this piece, there wouldn't be any difference. This great practice session, definitely not a performance.
@stko9164
@stko9164 4 года назад
This is such a stupid comment, it normally does not deserve a reaction.... However, if you do not know that you simply cannot do some things on an organ the same way as on a piano for example, due to the lack of velocity-dynamic keys.... Then you should better say nothing, hm ?!?!?
@stjepanmolnar600
@stjepanmolnar600 4 года назад
Exactly, so you should do other stuff. Organ is not piano that doesn't have dynamic keys, it's completely different instrument. Did you ever hear of some different parameters in music than dynamic, articulation for example, harmony, rhythm, voicing? Use them, or you can just decide to play each length of note in each voice as it is written, and think you make art. I know this piece, and I need first three bars to know how it will be in each bar: the same and the same...
