@@Raphael16045 Pc gaming is fully digital since there hardly don't even exist physical games for pc anymore since pc gaming is all about gaming launchers Like steam.
It needs to coexist with digital, Im glad Nintendo and Sony have a heavy majority of their physical games being on the disc/cartridge and that they can be played fully without the need for patches or additional downloads. Im also glad we have GOG (Good Old Games Launcher) to have DRM free games, I never bothered with it as I assumed most games I'd want wouldnt be there, but I basically transferred 80% of my steam wishlist over to GOG. We really failed to teach the kids what is good, wild that many think digital is good when it takes away resale or trading or offline functionality and especially ownership. Its nice to just start a game up in a menu but we should value our money the most, to get the most out of our buck.
@@TheSlimeKilling_Minecart PS still has a hefty majority of their games fully on disc without the need to be online to play everything. However the switch brought back plug-n-play so thats why I bought it first.
I have both XSX and PS5 and I'm mainly buying games for PS5 physically. I like the covenience of digital but physical is just so much better for collection.
@@rundown132 You will lose updates to the games if the servers don't go down. You technically never own games these days. Old, retro games, sure. Today you have more of a license.
@@jimhalpert0 Most games come with a deluxe version like Horizon Forbidden West and Cyber Punk 2077. Both games came out with a new version that has all the patches included. This is why you have to wait to buy certain games.
These publishers are taking away choices from customers / gamers. Gamers needs to speak up now. Do not let these companies take away your choices. Control your dollar speak with your wallet.
The last physical game i bought for Xbox was ReCore back in 2016. I have been fully digital since then, regarding Xbox. Saying that i still want/need a disc slot on my Xbox system, for backwards compatibility Xbox games and blu-ray use.
Definitely disappointing if they prematurely stop supporting physical games... It will be up to them to show us why this will benefit the platform in the future.
it benefits them, as they have full control over your account, can take games away on a whim, ban your account and take all your shit, lock you into garbage sub services. Benefits for you? Nothing really.
@Sir_Adam Not about ownership for me - though it is for some. For me, it's about options - even though I personally don't buy games physically unless I find them for $5-10 - often used. Good for me, but understandably bad for Xboxs business.
@@nickstark8479 Thats another huge reason for me. I can't afford $70 every time I want a new game, So I wait for used on Ebay etc. And that is what companies hate about physical copies.
@@nickstark8479 On PC I'm all-digital for more than a decade now. But for some reason, I only play PS5 games that I have physical copies of. For console it's either physical or nothing to me, I don't like digital for some reason.
If Xbox goes all digital, I will never buy a console from them ever again. I’ve been with Xbox since the OG Xbox days. I supported the underdog when PS2 was dominating the market. This is a very anti-consumer move on their behalf. Ownership of physical media is very important to me. I can think of a few ideas that might work for Xbox. Release an external disc drive. And let physical disc be installed to SSD and not needed every time the game is played.
Same but i don’t think it will matter. PlayStation is going the same route its just the unfortunate future. Is what it is bro. Sucks but nothing we can do about it. Time marches on
@Yvng_remixer wtf u talking about? Stop acting like pc is exclusive to its own shit, calm down buddy. I know you probably like feeling included like you belong to something but no, pc is just video games just like consoles, settle down bubba. It's all going digital and there ain't no difference in it.
I will be supporting any console with physical media, But it seems They want to turn gaming in to a service, and i dont see that as a costumer i benefit from that, so the day the three console makers go full digital, is the day i'll go full Jack Sparrow, if you know what i mean.
When you think Microsoft learned from their many past mistakes, they go and screw everything up… No physical games, that’s when I’ll stop gaming. Digital future ain’t the way.
Thank the consumers they’ve already voted with their wallets for a digital game future. Those of us who are watching this video are a very small percentage of gaming consumers.
@@Packin-Heat To be fair, Playstation and nintendo are going the same route when it comes to physical. The only real choice is going to choose the right platform for you, being the PC despite it being fully digital these days, thankfully you do have a way to buy games in a cheap manner these days, only problem would be how you are able to sell your games once they are no longer wanted. From what I heard though you cannot resell your games once you are done, which is unfortunate. I mainly use physical copies as a means to avoid paying a premium for consoles, but if I am using my PC I would either pay directly via steam or get a game key of sorts. Otherwise it is a real shame, but from what I heard is that Steam "might" add the option to resell digitally but that would require the french court to do something about that.
whys that, i love gamepass cus i dont have to worry about buying a game for $80 and be bored with it in 2 weeks, i get where ur coming from and the whole buying isn't owning but that simply is not gonna be how things are gonna turn out, if u want to keep ur games then buy them i doubt xbox would take that drastic measure of turning themselves into solely a streaming service cus it would destroy them, especially after they have built themselves backup with Phil Spencer.
@@abdulwasay6690 Consumers communicate with companies with their money. There are over 20 million Gamepass subscribers. That tells them that consumers like games as a service. Supporting that service is contributing to the end of physical media even faster than it would eventually. I know Gamepass is convenient, but it’s making people forget about physical too much. My concern is when everything goes digital prices will go up due to lack of competition and ownership will end as well as the games are controlled by the servers and not the consumers.
And that’s is just what they are doing right now, the only difference is that gamers are more willing to accept it than they were in 2013 because games are cheaper with game pass
It’s simply not surprising. Consolidation AND the Covid hiring bubble has popped all around. I wish those who lost their jobs the best. Could they Xbox Microsoft afford to keep all the people? Most certainly but corporate business is efficiency above all else which is truly unfortunate. Corporate hates bloat and bloat cuts into the profit which ANY corporation HATES. Again it’s awful and sad for all those laid off but it’s not something only Xbox should be called out for. Great coverage as always and none of this is a direct criticism towards the content itself.
1:22 it seens very likely, Nintendo will be only of the 3 major companies, to still suport physical media, Sony and specifically Microsoft are transitining to a fully digital era/ecosystem
This is why Microsoft buying all these Devs is such a bad thing. Gaming is a business, and a business can't make money on a second, third or fourth sale of the same disc.
@@File.hype.exe_is_not_respondinyou haven’t noticed the dwindling physical presence in all stores yet? Most retailers have said they plan on not selling physical media starting this year. It’s dying and all companies will be all digital at some point. PC has been all digital for 20 years now.
I have all digital now except for a few games. normally because of the great deals for digital compared to physical. Hope if they make another concle they will still include a disc drive because I use my xbox series x as a blu-ray player
As much as I don't like the "all digital way," I loaded my Wii U with games I feel would last longer than the disc drive. But I also take good care of it so as not to ruin said disc drive. Not every game needs a physical release, whereas some do deserve one. Not every movie is going to be remembered for generations so not every movie needs to be in theaters and some are direct-to-video as they rightfully should be. Not everyone needs a giant library of games and films and books. Half or more of their library goes to the trash/dump anyway or sold at a garage sale or given to a local Goodwill. So I'm not 100% against it, but I'm also not 100% for it. There needs to be a common ground, say like trading in your digital purchase for another. If I remembered right, Nintendo did this back then where they had hubs so you could change what game was on the disc. We're in the age of portable TiVo's. We need chips, we need chips...I'll say it again, we need chips!
The problem with this whole thing is that the more Microsoft buys the more studios are doomed to having their games all digital and these guys dont buy a studio or two. They buy wholeass publishers that include multiple studios. I'm already annoyed that I wont be seeing Obsidian games physically but whats next? Sega? Capcom? Theres no limit for these folks. So yes, folks froth at the mouth wanting so and so game on Gamepass but dont think about the consequences. Congratulations everyone *clap clap*
At this point there is no point to physical games. The game you buy in physical media is at best half done at launch and all dlc will be digital anyway. Physical media and consoles themselves will be obsolete.
My biggest issue is that they seem like they’ll release the next console within the next year or 2. I’m sorry but seriously they need to focus on making better games before completely giving up on this current gen. I’m sorry folks but putting their exclusives on Gamepass day one does not help in any way.
@@reisshep just recently word began to spread out that the next console is set to release in 2026. A lot of the stuff from the documents are old plans that they are not going through with anymore. It looks highly unlikely that their mid gen refreshes are coming out anymore.
Even if they launch the next gen Xbox in 2026, 6 years is still a long time and perfectly normal for console generations. They’ll definitely continue releasing games for Series X/S for many years.
As a huge xbox fan that owns all their consoles. They have been the biggest disappointment in gaming history, destroying the gaming culture and literary not making games. 20 years owning rare, the people who make masterpieces and the only game we get i bullshit sea of thieves ? Lol hilarious. Im buying a shit load of cheap xbox games and i will never support microsft aga i n
Honestly, what is the problem with including a disc drive in the design of your console? Digital is great but I always consider making a console that supports less media options is a downgrade.
Sad to see this, only real benifit is less plastic being used on the planet. But being locked into an eco system and not owning any of your games is not a bright future. Gamepass is great for finding hidden gems and trying games out before a future purchase elsewhere for me. I havnt bought a game on Xbox since COD Cold War 3 years ago Only GOG is digital game ownership Whats your opinions?
This would be the worst mistake microsoft/Sony or Nintendo would ever make the day this happend ppl should stop supporting these companies regardless of the love we as the consumers have for them it’s that simple🤦🏻♂️
I'll probably stop buying consoles then when that happens. Got a huge backlog of a couple console generations to go through. So old school all the way !
I just thought of something. Next gen may have to be all digital by default. Here’s why. Right now a 4k Blu-ray Disc can hold 100GB. Depending on how much of a jump next gen is there may not be a physical format that can hold the size of the game especially some of the larger more demanding games. Unless another physical format is around by then.
@@LukiGames0 sure. The only drawback I could see is that these companies will come up with some proprietary storage to help protect piracy and charge much for them. I mean look at the Switch. Those are t as cheap to produce as discs and the more storage they require the more expensive they will be. Now by the time next gen rolls around maybe the cost will be less but then you run into the issue of backwards compatibility with your current discs. All this to me point to the digital future being inevitable as games grow. Nintendo may be the only one that can get do physical for longer as cards het cheaper and mobile tech improves they will likely be able to put current gen specs on a mobile chipset in the future without breaking the bank.
So now Xbox is basically just going to be a PC, but you’re in a walled garden with prices set by Microsoft, sounds like a great deal… looks like I’m returning the series x I just picked up.
With the money one spends on a series x and gamepass, after 5 years a person would spend as much as the upfront cost of a great mid/high range PC. It's worth it to save up and get freedom to play online and DRM free games and better web/music/movie/web browsing options, but even PC gaming can be very annoying with DRM like denuvo, multiple launchers that hold like one or two good game series, and the annoying TOS/EULAs that people skip but have dire conditions. It can be really sketchy like some games asked me for my web browsing activities before and (at times) AFTER using their services with no indicator of how long before and after they spy on your activities! Its why Im mainly buying from GOG so I know I can play these games offline with no data going out. Consoles still have a use imo for games like that, I can install them offline and play the game knowing they wont send any info out. We need to be more diligent to protect our data, given companies tend to keep our private info in plain text and leaks/breaches will always happen to big companies its better to keep our data out of their hands. With the removal of physical, offline and data security is less possible, and that allows them to get data and profit off of our worsened security.
Im sure they have the data that supports them cutting out physical media bc id guess 85-90% of their sales are digital. I even think i read somewhere that alot of publishers are hesitent to even put their game on xbox bc the stigma is that xbox players don't buy games they just wait for them to come to xbox
Let's say third party people like limited run take care of physical media going forward. If those versions include all the dlc and patches on disc then I'd be fine paying a premium. But that only exists as long as Xbox has a disc drive.
Moving forward Xbox won't have a disc drive. Wether that happens this gen or next gen isn't important, but it could happen at any time with a new digital only Xbox X, the disc drive version being phased out. I see Nintendo doing this too, they already have a bunch of digital only AAA titles. I don't see Sony doing this anytime soon.
@@Alien_isolationist So why did Sony release the All Digital then? Oh and they released the All Digital with the slim models so you know it's not a one off.
@@stevenbishop1782 so freakin what those are options 🙄 the only game Sony released in digital format was Alan Wak 2. Nintendo has numerous AAA titles digital only, & Xbox is pushing gamepass. I don't see Playstation 6 being digital only.
Given the small amount of Series X games fully on disc, as opposed to just the Xbox One version with a download for the SX ver, and MS's move into the PC space with Xbox more resembling something like Steam, I can't say this move's a surprise. Hell, I still have a few of my old PC CD and DVD ROM discs stored away, but between disc rot and the need for long expired or used up activation keys they're useless aside from nostalgia. The PC gaming space went through the same thing when Steam first launched.
Having the ability to go back and play a game is what's important there are so many games I miss playing but they don't exist anymore and sadly this will happen to digital media but even faster, play any game that's available until the companies say you can't access it anymore that's the future of gaming, and at this point what would even be the reason for gaming everyone might as well switch to pc and enjoy retro gaming and emulation till the end of their days.
My guess is the Series X will stay physical, and they will still release them for it, but next gen probably won’t have a disc drive. This is the first step of them doing that.
@@zozzinator true, But I still think they will release physical for the Series X out there that have the drive. Then Next Gen no Xbox will have a drive.
@@michael423 I keep seeing that they'll release either 2 versions of consoles with a d without a disc drive. But then iv also seen they could release all digital but sell a attachable disc drive
When they announced Game Pass, instead of upgrading from Gold, I cancelled altogether and switched to PlayStation. Since the series X came out, I was waiting for a decent price to get one for the exclusives. Now that they announced that the drive is going away, I got my X before they disappear. When physical media is gone altogether, so will I from that platform forever. Sony and Nintendo have been more opened to listening to their customers. I love my retro games a lot ad well and without physical media, it wouldn't be without having to hack, so I find it a shame that they're killing the survival of the platform. Once they loose a right to a game, it will be gone. Think of Transformers on the 360. Digital in unavailable, you got to find a disc.
I got discs but still internet is required to install the games, Xbox is going to become luxury for those with fast internet because it needs internet to simply install a game and that will shrink its market because some don’t have affordable internet and they will opt out
Subscriptions aren’t the future lol. I have xbox game pass on my pc. I started playing guardians of the galaxy on it when it was included in the game pass back in 2022. I stopped having my game pass account at the end of 2022 and stop playing pc games then. I went back to my pc at the end of 2023 and thought I would finish the game. So I resubscribed to finish the game. Imagine to my surprise that the game was no longer available for game pass. Fortunately it was on sale for 14 dollars so I purchased it. Game pass is just like any other streaming service. They have a licensing agreement with 3rd party games. When the licensing agreement expires they will remove the game from their streaming service.
If the PSP Go was successful, I imagine a world where Sony would have done this first. Ironically, my PS 3 and 4 consoles became all digital by default eventually after the drives failed. Because of that, I have the PS5 digital and the XSX since I have a fairly large BC library of physical games. I didn't plan it that way, it just happened. Out side of that, I'm all digital on the pc for over a decade.
People complain about how gamepass is the cause of this and is the root for the whole buying isnt owning thing, but think of it, just buy the dam game if u want to actually own it, and i get that u wont be able to get discs anymore but i thinks that's for the better. I doubt companies would revoke ur digital games (except Ubisoft, they are smoking something strong) and digital is more convenient and plus what if u lose ur disc or break it, then what, u have to buy the game again. I agree how physical media shouldn't go away, but when was the last time that u bought a disc for a pc game times change?
Getting a Series X, and playing on it for 10 years! Thing plays almost all my 360 games and all my One games and SX, what more could a gamer want? All digital can kiss my Hillary!!
So say they go all digital are games still going to cost $70? Like how do you justify the digital price compared to disk. I would say at least $10 goes to create the physical copy no? Wishful thinking i guess.
You’d think from a business standpoint that if a digital system fails that they wouldn’t release another system but they released another one for series consoles. Not a smart move.
I a personally not really sad about this, I've only ever owned 3 or 4 games physically, and that was on pc as I've never owned a console, and that was like in 2012, I've then been digital on pc. Even planning to get a series s soon.
But Playstation hasnt moved to a fully digital experience yet. Why are ppl making it seem like PS5 is a digital only console? I just installed and played Horizon on PS5 w no internet connection. Its version 1.00 though.
Disney recently announced they would stop distribution of DVDs and Blu-rays for the Australian market. This is most likely neither the first movie production company to do so nor the last country it will happen to.
Maybe MS can not justify charging the same for physical and digital anymore. TBH there is few first party games im interested in these days as bored of Halo and Gears after 10 yrs plus. Maybe they will out source to rip off company's like limited games etc
They’ll probably not change the price and still continue to charge $70. It’ll be up to them what price you pay for game now unlike walking into GameStop and seeing a game for $25 and the same game on Xbox store for $45 .
As soon as they do I'm not buying anymore games.... they want us to get the game pass and play games that way. Unfortunately I like having physical games. I like being able to play when the internet is down.
I’m happy I bought a disk PS5. I have access to all my PS4 games and have options going forward. If the PS6 is all digital I might stick with my 5 for quite a while.
Its a STUPID MOVE of MS to do this. Having a HARD copy is way better than just digital but as it is of today it looks like they are going to finish killing it off. ARGH.
As a PC gamer, this feels so overblown. I finally got a PS5 and expected to immediately want physical games because I think owning things physically is very cool. But I've been buying digital games because it's so much more convenient. To me, physical copies are not crucial to game preservation. Emulation and DRM-free digital copies are.
Ayy guys I’m a 16 year old Xbox fan and I’m going to say this first people say they have no games second people say Xbox is going 3rd party and now They are killing physical games can XBOX BE ANY WORSE 💀💀
I will continue to buy physical media for as long as I can, even if they tone them down to a limited release type of thing, just as long as the option is offered that’s okay with me, because the idea of paying for an expensive figital only game and then having that license revoked out of the blue is pretty fucked
With Xbox going all digital, then there's no need for me to invest into the Xbox console "ecosystem" or Game Pass. The very few games that interests me from Xbox, I'll just buy them digitally on Steam.
I don't think physical support will end during this generation as the Series X has the disc drive so it doesn't make much sense to just randomly stop. However I agree that how Xbox is tracking I wouldn't be surprised if the change will occur during the next generation
If the companies can figure out how to make ALL games available via subscription for a fixed price, say, 20 to 25 bucks each per month ($40 to $50 max), I would jump right on that bandwagon. If it is limited and some games are only for sale, not so much. None of this buy or not being able to play at all... or I'm out.
The landscape of Xbox and Microsoft PC production is set to change dramatically by 2030. While I'm not eager to expand my library, I do have a preference for a classic, enduring system that provides a superior range of choices compared to the so-called upgrades, which often boast minimal improvements. This is reminiscent of the iPhone 7 and 8 scenario, where many chose to keep the 7 until the 10's release, as the upgrade wasn't compelling. It feels like a forced transition, stripping away features or options available from the beginning, which seems disrespectful. It wouldn't surprise me if the Xbox were to be transformed into a Wi-Fi router, enabling a number of streams from a USB hub in your room for connectivity. In this way, they could take the fun, games, and even our very own consoles with them.
After researching and considering my speculations, I've observed a trend in streaming content and wireless transmissions. It's reminiscent of my facetious remark about a Wi-Fi router Xbox; we're approaching what I've described, where content is streamed to a central hub-your system. Microsoft's future projects hint at a new, fully digital system resembling the tall Amazon Alexa devices. However, this game system seems more like a device designed for quick profit than an upgrade. For instance, I can't play my Xbox 360 games on an Xbox One, despite it being touted as the most powerful system of its era, simply because they weren't ported. This doesn't feel like progress, especially when I primarily use that feature. As a consumer, I encounter issues that highlight the need for the right to repair and the right to use items provided by the company that sells them. How can a company sell Xbox 360 games without offering the console, then lock the games to the next generation, forcing a new console purchase? Every loophole I've investigated seems to funnel money into their pockets-they're a shrewd and decisive company.
Obviously, one could opt for second-hand purchases, but that's not the point here. If I, as a newcomer to Xbox, wanted to play Fallout: New Vegas, I would need to buy the game and possibly an Xbox 360. This would result in a single digital game purchase, assuming you're not using a disc version-if they haven't sold a physical copy in years except through their marketplace or if you're not ordering it online. Personally, I would only buy new, so I'd use their marketplace. You could buy a used Xbox 360 or Xbox One and still be set, but you'd have to pay for the online service to play, depending on the game. This applies to a new Xbox as well; you could run used games on it, but you're still paying for the online service. Unless your idea of gaming is playing solo titles, you're likely paying for online access. You could create a new account on a friend's Xbox and play there-that's the only free workaround I've found to get set up with anything Microsoft. Otherwise, you're either giving them money or playing offline. Free games might offer free online play, but no one buys an Xbox just to play Fortnite-unless you're 12, and even then, it's probably your parents who made the purchase. So, unless it was gifted, you'd be spending money on the company or at least out of your pocket.
If MS stops to make physical discs I will move to the other side of the force: PlayStation. I have 122 physical games since Xbox One then I will not be allowed to play them anymore on the next Xbox console?
Microsoft should know most gamers love physical over digital I subscribed to game pass just to play the newest games day 1 to see if I would like it so if Microsoft decided to go digital I’ll buying my games for PlayStation only if Sony decided to do the same then everyone’s digital I’ll go PC but won’t be buying to many games
