This goes beyond the scope of anything I'll be capable of doing, but it was fascinating and insightful. I'm certain this chip is responsible for my console's death because shortly before it died, I couldn't get it to connect to my TV via HDMI. One of these days, I'll have to find a local specialist to replace my chip.

Thanks mate! I had my suspicions from from an Xbox that came back in for warranty with the same issue and symptoms. No shorts. Changed the retimer chip and boom, back to life. Glad you were able to confirm this. Why do you think they keep dying? Bad batch or bad design? These are the same ones in the Xbox one S. At least you can buy them directly from Texas Instruments in the USA, at least.

Have you tried turning on the console once removed from the board, or is it required to turn on ?. Wasn’t sure if removing it would resolve the short and allow it to turn on (without hdmi output)

Would this also be a solution for an Xbox one x turning on for a second then right back off? I've replaced the power supply, an went over the board and nothing seemed abnormal to the eye.

I've replaced 4 retimer chips on the Xbox X's with success. I just did another one and it would power up then shut off immediately. Then it ended up not powering up at all anymore. Good to know this is caused by this chip. Guess I better go back and check my work on that chip.

Very good video .. I have a problem on the xbox one x it turns on for 1 second then it turns off .. the 12v power supply out ... NFD740 there is no ground I checked it as you did have done . the HDMI port seems perfect to me. can the tp 158 do this kind of problem?

Great vid! Very familiar with repairing the retimer on this model Xbox. however, does the console actually need a retimer to power on? If you have one that doesnt power on and you think maybe its the retimer can you just pull the retimer and then test for power on? Or will it not power on without one in place?

Prob power on for a sec with no image and esd protection chip will turn console back off again to protect other components.

Hey so im working on a one X that does absolutely nothing when i push the power button, i opened the power supply and one of the power regulator transistors had its middle leg vaporized, i used a new power supply and still nothing, it appears that all the PMICs are shorted to ground, would it be sensible to try replacing the retimer ?

Hey I have a question about my xbox one x. I just replaced the power supply because it wasn't turning on on making any sounds. After the replacement it turns on for about 30 seconds then shuts off. Meanwhile there is no display. I would appreciate any help you can give thank you

Not too many electronic techs around anymore. Haven't seen this level of expertise in over 30 years. So I have encountered the infamous xbox turns on and 5 seconds later turns off or does not turn on at all. My question is does the power supply (xbox one X internal psu) make any noise when plugged in? I would expect the detection of a tiny bit of humming but mine is making a sound that can only be described as a quiet intermittent crackling almost sounding like a random morse code crackling or tapping, but the output voltage remains at 12 volts. Any thoughts? Help please?

Which iron and temperature are you using to go over the pins as I use a quick with flux but solder just joins between connections? Also are you using the flux and solder in your description?

Yeah the flux I use in the description but the solder is just a 63/37 I found on amazon as I use the solder sold by atten who I brought my hot air station from but I'll be using that stuff myself again soon. In terms of temps and iron o use a hakko fx-951 at 450⁰C (I never change the temp). I think in this video I was still using my TS100 iron at 450⁰C though:)

Hi Bud.. Thanks for video, great tip about checking the retimer. Out of interest, what is the IC at U21? Do you know what it for? I have one that gets very hot when power on. I know you cannot buy them (have tried many google searches) so will have to get a donor board... but what does the IC actually do?

Thank you Simon, much appreciated. U21 is an ESD protection IC but it's a BGA chip so it won't won't easy to get from a donor board unless you can reball unfortunately

@@TheCod3r Ah, thank you.. makes sense so there to protect/block static from the HDMI port/circuit? Have you ever seen that IC causing the HDMI to fail auto detecting the correct resolution? I have a Xbox X that only auto detects at 640 x 480 (but can be manually changed to 1080) - have replaced the retimer and HDMI port but no luck so far

Hi My Xbox One X is powering on and then going off. I have taken the supply out and run it without a load and to me it is sounding like it is 'ticking'. I have measured the output and it is 12V approx. but I dont know if that holds out under load. Does this seem like a motherboard problem? I only ask as I could not pick out any noise from either of the supplies you tried (at least not like what I am hearing!).

Does he happen have have a video on an Xbox one x turning on then turning off after a few seconds. I always get the beeps on start up but it just never stays on long enough to start up completely. It’s not overheated and I’ve power cycled it and moved to different outlets. I don’t want to buy a power supply because I feel like that might not be the issue.

From what I've found it affects the 3.3v rail. I had 2 new chips drag it down to 2.5v.

Ceramic capacitors don't have input and output mate, they can be installed either way around 😉👍

I have 3 xbox one x that are stuck at 86% during "applying update" for new osu1. They do not give error code, they stay on update screen indefinitely. I can swap hdd and upload newest osu and still happens. Is there a fix for this???

You should've tested the power supply first with a multimeter on the power supply port where u put the cable in it should have 12v u can still sell the supply

To remove the chip if I don't plan to reuse that chip I go for 480⁰C at 40% air flow. If I'm reusing it I use 440⁰C at 40% air flow

how are you at fixing GPUS? lad i know wired 2 gpus up for mining, but messed up the wiring, powered the PCI extensions from one psu and the main 8 pin connections from another, when hes turned the system of thats when its fried the gpus

To be honest I've never tried to fix one apart from the odd messing around on my own broken ones, but if the gpu was wired incorrectly it would likely be a mosfet which has blown

After replacing the retimer ic I had power but it would immediately shut off and after awhile no power at all. Have one capacitor shorted at the retimer chip and one at the U21. Powered on fine before and stayed on until I replaced that chip. Could a incorrectly installed retimer ic chip cause this short on the U21 chip? Should I try and just replace the retimer chip again? My initial problem was no signal but it powered on fine and stayed on up until I replaced the retimer chip. Thanks in advance.

I would try and replace it again but it's hard to say what caused it, but if sounds like maybe the chip is installed in the wrong orientation or that there's a bridge somewhere

Got a one X here beeps on beeps off, all voltages are where they should be. Chucked a retimer on just for the sake of it no luck. I’m thinking a ceramic cap or resistor has died somewhere. Fancy a project Phill ? I’ve not got the time at work to carry on diving deeper :(

To be honest if all voltage rails are present you likely have dead ram or dead apu. It's probably a lost cause if I'm being honest

I have the same issue. The power button lights up for a few moments and shuts off...the fan also does a very brief spin. The power supply/HDD are good ... I eventually reached out to the reddit community for help. My only response was from someone in your country, extremely helpful and nice. He told me that it could be the retimer chip. Says it's a 50/50 chance. I ordered it already and now I just wait and see.

Picked up an old Xbox One X from a yard sale for $20.. Seller said it didn't work. Plugged it in and it powered right up.. But the disc drive was dead.. Hi, great video. I have some of experience on electronincs and it is now a hobby for me to help my friends. I use your videos to develop my troouble shooting ability and practice! Thanks for the really detailed and explaining videos! An other one from you helped me to repair two One S consols! Currently I am working on an Xbox One X, which had liquid damage. It does power on, lights up, but than shuts off in 2 sec. HDD dos not spin, just 5V are there in teh connector. That worries me that capacitors arround and under the GPU are short to ground, almost all of them eg. C1330/1331; than C253-257 and so on. As well as on the back side of the panel around L2 and L16. Is that board completely dead? Where to look for shorts, etc. any suggestion? (I know from the One S is that two Mosfets on power line caused a number of short to ground, but here I have no experience yet). Thanks!

When I press my Xbox One X power button on it makes the noise then lights up as if its booting up for about 7 seconds & then makes the noise as if I pushed the button again to turn off & just shuts off, the input on tv never notices it turned on. Is this more then likely the problem? Xbox started this after a storm we had. Not sure if that's the initial cause.

What was the fluid you used on the Retimer IC? Was it just liquid flux? I've been trying to learn how to replace this type of chip package 😀

No it's normal flux, just the board was warm so it pretty much instantly melts :)

@@Snecho Make sure you have the proper nozzle on your hot air. Also, the closer you hold the nozzle to what you're soldering the quicker it will heat up and melt. I just did this repair and it did take a little more heat and time than I expected but as long as you shield the sensitive components (memory, CPU) around the area you should be OK.

It can but it's rare. Usually it either causes no display or completely dead. A beep on and off issue could be absolutely anything and it's usually very tricky to find the problem

If you replace the retimer and the replacement went perfect it will probably be either the hard drive or the esd protection ic. If its the esd protection ic unfortunately they can't be purchased so have to be taken from donor boards and reballed

@@TheCod3r yes i verified retimer chip connections were good and not bridged under microscope, replaced hdd and sata cable with a good known working one i have extra and still same issue turns on stays on you can hear fan, hdd and everything working properly it even accepts a game disk and spins it normally, so yes probably the ic chip you are mentioning, what other xbox motherboard has that same ic chip?

It’s sad the amount of time you waste each video you have to convince people who supposedly know it all, that the problem isn’t the PSU that it’s something else on the mobo or vice versa or some other problems.

I don't generally see it as a waste of time to be honest, as long as at least one or 2 people are learning something that's my goal. If I teach one or 2 people a new thing in each video my channel is doing what I set out to do 😁

My xbox one x had the same diagnosis as the. Video does not turn on and I change the Hdmi ic and it still does not turn on, what else should I change friend, greetings

If you still have no video output after you change the retimer and if the port is mint try installing a new hard drive (even if it's just a small 60GB hard drive to test it). If it still doesn't display it likely has an issue with the ESD protection IC. Sadly that chip cannot be purchased anywhere.

The hard disk does work since I mounted it on an xbox one s but my xbox one x still does not turn on and I changed the Ic dtp 158 I do not know what else to change. it does not turn on it has no power
