This makes me so mad. I am totally fine with them selling a console without the drive, but intentially making the console incapable of recognizing a disc drive is just scam to make people shill out for the X if they still have discs.

@mrcl11w31 it's one this to not include a disc drive to save cost. It's scummy not incude one and deliberately make all disc drives incompatible. You can take any low end pc without a drive and plug one into it with no issue. This was an intentional effort specifically to get more money out of people.

@@bpcgos fair enough. I’ve been curious about stuff just because. Like what happens if you put an Xbox game in a PS5. The answer is it says it can’t play it but doesn’t show the to play this disc message that is on all Xbox games. It literally causes the PS5 to give you an error

On consoles, their DVD drives are married to their motherboards, and that's still true for the series x and ps5. This is done for security purposes so you can't install other disk drives on the consoles to bypass security measures. I was hoping that the Xbox series consoles would do away with this form of DRM, but we are not there yet. The disk drive is responsible for handling the detection of valid or secure media, if this did work, you'd be able to install games from burned disks. I was hoping to install some of my old xbox and 360 games that are backwards compatibile, but since it doesn't appear to detect the disk drive, I don't have hope that we could get this to actually work (officially)

@@AzureGhost117 it would seriously be cool. I tried my external dvd drive and had the same result as this video. I tried a couple of xbox and 360 games that were on the backwards compatibility list, but no dice. The dvd drive works and tries to read the disks, but my series S doesn't react or do anything. I tried the rear usb ports too.

@@timelymirror7826 Too bad it kills the backwards compatibility program Microsoft was pushing so hard last gen. That's why I went PC this time around. For 200$ more than the Series X I can play all the same games with better performance (in 1080p) and I'm backwards compatible with literally everything except the Sega Saturn and the OG Xbox (due to no good emulators). On top of all that I get a disc drive. GG Microsoft, unironically glad they pushed me out of their [clarification for 80 individuals:] (console) ecosystem.

i found this at google: there is one person who talked about " can i put external bluray player to series s?" ( on microsoft support) and xbox ambassador says" do you want make a piracy?". and another one says "no. if you put bluray player on it. why you not buying series x with enhanced performance?". i think microsoft say kinda rude of their customers.

They could but they are probably too concerned with piracy. Xbox One and Xbox Series X drives have hardcoded encrypted serial number that need to match serial number of console. If numbers are different then console will not start. There is no chance to swap bluray drives beetwen two identical consoles. It's all anti-piracy measures. If they would make external drive for Series S then they would need to get rid off all of that. Communication beetwen drive and console would use USB which potentially can be vulnerable for attacks and expoilts. Developing a new protection techology would probably cost them hunders milions of dolars plus all marketing, production and distribution costs of drive itself. It's hard to break even with deal like that. Of course there is still chance that in future someone will break drive protection of current Xbox. Then Microsoft will need to act to develop new protection so maybe then they will make external drive on the occasion.

No it wouldn’t. People would pay 99€ my and would play used games instead of exclusively buy them in their store. They don’t make any profit with selling the series s hardware. It’s all about buying stuff in their store. Look at hard ware prices. The series s it sold non profit basically

@@svenk5221 I'm much more likely to buy games at the store than, buy games online. At least, with a disc, I can pass it off to someone else, if I find out that I don't like the game. If you buy a game online, you're totally screwed if you find out the game sucks.

@@Romeroland not if it’s already formatted for PS4 or PS5. If it’s formatted PS4, just unplug it and plug it into the ps5. Music, movies, and games you’ve purchased and downloaded from PS4 will automatically work when the external device is plugged into your ps5, at least that’s what Sony website says.

Discs are going the way of the 8 track player. Microsoft and 3rd parties can even publish media using that propietary SSD port if they wanted. That would be a lot neater and almost cartridge like similar to the Switch.

It is _aimed_ at 1440p for games, still it can run games at 4k like the Series X, but of course only graphically simpler games due to the slower GPU.

Xbox 360, Xbox One, and now Xbox Series X disc drives have to be "married to the motherboard." There is a unique "key" in the drives firmware that has to match the "key in the motherboard's NAND. You can't even use the drive from one Series X in another Series X, until the "people" find a technique to spoof/flash the keys to drives.

The Series S does output in 4k. 1440p is generally seen as a marketing guideline for maximum game resolution. The system streams in 4k and upscales games in 4k. In fact some games (Ori and the Will of the Wisp) are rendered in 4k.

@@sleasy01 It IS native 4k. Many games are upscaled because they are rendered in a sub 4k resolution. But some games, like Ori, are native. Also, streaming services that offer 4k content are native as well. It is still HDMI 2.1 just like Series X and PS5.

Wherever you're getting your info from it's wrong. If it's not post it. It's 4k for series x. hdmi 2.1 has nothing to do with it being 4k. That's for 120fps and vrr

Regardless of Xboxes advertisement of peak FPS both systems have achieved higher FPS than advertised. The series X has potential to reach 8K as well as a series s reaching 4K. You shouldn't argue if you don't have any facts

Thumb drives work on PS5 insert the drive, go to liberty/installed/media gallery, your usb drive will show up there.

I think this is a software issue, which he hinted at in the video. It's not a lack of capability. It's the programming of the blu-Ray app. If it was possible to install 3rd party apps on Xbox series S you could make this work. What we really need is homebrew, or custom firmware, which would then allow you to install 3rd party apps. And, of course, a homebrew blue ray drive app. But it would have to be compiled to talk to the hardware Controller in the USB blu-ray drive. Not an easy task. I see the main problem here is that the blue ray app from the store is specifically coded to look for the xbox specific blue ray drive found In the xbox one and xbox series x. Otherwise, the software won't know how to talk to the hardware of whatever drive you plug in.

If I'm correct, Microsoft started encrypting communication between optical disc drive and the main processor starting with Xbox 360. This is to basically trust the optical drive and prevent piracy. And there is a video about Microsoft talking about Xbox One's security system, and they mention that the disc drive is paired with the processor, so that the disc drive can be trusted. So it's no surprise that external ones don't work at all(though I think they could definitely add support for video playback).

Definetely try using developer mode and pluging in different USB accessories including the disk drive. like elgato stream deck USB microphones and more.

Even if it could read the disk it wouldn’t play the games as even Xbox and PlayStation systems with built in drives, they still require you to download the game into the built in storage to play the games, they don’t actually play directly from Blu-ray’s

Consoles use special drives woth custom firmware that has DRM built in to protect against piracy.. They will never allow to use regular usb drives. Hovewer Microsoft could release custom USB BR drive for Xbox, but they don't want drives anymore. Series s is so cheap because it has no drive and you can't sell games you've already played.

The lag is because the drive that you have connected is slow (plus the front USB is 2.0) while the back is 3.0 -- It has nothing to do with the xbox, but more of what you're using is the wrong approach. And Quick Answer for people coming in: NOOOO.

If the dvd drive was hdmi, why not just plug into a spare HDMI port on the TV? Doesn't really need to be funneled through the xbox. But I understand wanting to play physical games. Im hoping xbox does release a external DVD/Blueray player in the future but Im sure people are like just buy the series X. Well not everyone wants to fork out all that money at once. I like digital format, but would like to play discs they dont have in digital and also still would love to play my 100+ collection of dvds.

You need to update system they fixed that in beta testing. I'm not sure all bluerays driver will work. But the feature should be added. We found lots of driver that will work. So keep the bluerays drive. I also hear both are looking into ram drivers or cards for camera and phone support hubs. On both Xbox and Playstation in future.

Try the usb port closest to the power and hdmi ports, that is the usb used for external hdds on one, might work better

You should try plugging in the external blu ray player into one of the usb ports in the back of the series S and see if that fixes the problem. I tried using an external hdd in my series x in the front usb and it would initially read the drive but it wouldn’t show up in the Xbox storage, I plugged it in the usb in the back of the console and it immediately resolved the issue. The front usb is probably 2.0 and not 3.0 like the back ports

Only 1440p what do you mean? It can play videos in 4k without any problems. And it can play 4k on some games. Most 1080p and 1440p in games but still 4k on videos that supports it.

The Series Does video 4KHDR like the OneS and OneX it's just the games that's are at 1440p but you can still upscale it to 4k if the TV allows it

Anybody could have told you that, considering Microsoft used encrypted keys on the Xbox drives that had to match keys embedded on the motherboard - this was the fundamentals of anti piracy which jailbreaks eventually exploited - 85% of the jailbreak was recoding the Drive - thus proving you can’t just pop in any old drive into an xbox series S and think that it will work

They did say "digital only"... Xbox has always done media from storage. The Series S does support 4k (see AC Valhalla). 4k gaming is not optimal.

Finally someone had the good idea to do that ! Thank you so much. If you can try the app KODI maybe it can play the Blu-ray disc. For the USB drive try the app VLC. If the video lag on VLC on serie S it mean they must do a update for the serie S. Because technically the consol can play 4K vidéo like RU-vid 4K video.

Kodi for Xbox has no play disc option . I never noticed that until I watched this vid and went in to try it on my Xbox One . I think the only way to play Blu-Ray/DVD is to rip them to a USB thumb drive or external HDD and then use Kodi or VLC .

What happens if you put a hard drive with games installed from a disc into a Series S?

you still need the disc to verify the game, which won't work on the series s

This device did not work on the Xbox Series s because it is USB 2.0 and the Xbox Series does not support USB 2.0, but if USB 3.0 it will work on the Xbox

The only reason I won't buy a series s is because of the lack of a disc drive. I still can't find a series X in store, but if Microsoft released a drive for the S I'd buy it today.

Rip your Blu-ray discs to MP4 file on your PC and put them on an external hard drive or USB thumb drive and download "VLC" media player on the Xbox to play any kind of media. (Also, I doubt MS would allow any kind of external disc drives since that's where their security features are located so you can't play like a copied disc version of a game....and external disc drives use alot of power...hence why it has 2 usb 3.0 ports to give your external Blu ray drive enough power. I personally use a Sabrent 4-port USB 3.0 hub (the usb 3.0 hub that uses external power that you have to plug into an outlet as well) on my Series S /X for more ports for my hard drives, keyboard, mouse, controllers)
