Thanks for the great video! This is by far, one of the best reviews I have seen for the XDJ-RX2.... love the Fisher Price comment lol!!! Buying one next week :)
Thank you so much for the great helpful video. I am used to play CDJ-NXS2 and will have a gig this week with this XDJ-RX2 and have never worked with it before. I hope I will handle it thanks to your video. For me important was to hear what is different to the CDJs.
I have an RX2 by far the best all in one possible! No laptop needed! People are trying to compare this to the 1000's, the 1000's is too messy and you still need a laptop
I've just started mixing got a ddj 400 just to play with now I want to upgrade, really torn between the rx2 and the ddj 1000 I don't want to be the guy who constantly states at a laptop but the 1000 looks so much better I really don't know which way to go.
David, I've been a listener of the podcast since you guys first started and I must say its been a pleasure watching the podcast grow. that being said if you guys started video recording the podcast and posting it on the tube it would make heaps of difference. love the show guys.
Hey Tim! Sorry for the delay. Thanks so much for the kind words, and I'm glad you're listening to the show. We are certainly talking about doing video versions of the podcast, and has a lot to do with the rennovation I just completed. The room pictured above, already looks a bit different. :) There's a surprising amount of effort that goes into that, so we're easing into it slowly. Thanks for the feedback!
Wow. Excellent detail. This is the first review I've seen of yours n i hope you review everything this way. I was on the fence about this bit of kit but I'm definitely closer to a decision. Cheers.
Could of done with a SPLIT cue, Option. Pioneer should have this as standard on all controllers as does on stand alone mixers. Only RZX controller has split option, this would perfect if it was standalone with USB added with video mixing. All Denon controllers inc Prime 4 has a split cue.
Great video. You helped a lot to finalise my setup. Its a full value for money setup for passionate DJs. Wannabes might not like it but its a perfect machine. Thanks.
The Pioneer XDJ-RX2 correctly displays both the Cue Point, the Regular Loop and the Autoloop set by rekordbox. The first 2 (cue points and regular loops) I managed to create and store them in the USB pendrive directly from the XDJ-RX2, while the third (autoloop with red icon) did not. 😔
This by far is the best bang for your buck. I've been DJing for decades and have a NXS2 CDJ/DJM setup in a coffin. Damn thing weighs like 110Lbs. This controller in a case weighs in at about 50Lbs+. I just DJ'd a gig with this and it's perfect for that. Only thing missing is flac file support which Pioneer will never give you on a stand along controller. I guess if you need flac file support, you can always use Rekordbox DJ with your laptop. The controller comes with a full license for Rekordbox DJ.
how do the job wheels feel and how responsive is it compared to nxs2 cdjs? I have nxs2 cdj's but im thinking about selling them since they take up so much room for something smaller and more compact.
My DJM400 doesn’t have an option for split cue but if you press the master cue button and either channel cue button it splits the sound, one channel in each ear 👍 I assume this unit would work the same way? 🤷♂️
Passionate Dj, please do give e your advice. I'm just about to buy either this unit or the Ddj 1000 Dj. My genders are psytrance and techno. What I'm aiming for it's a controller that can perform as close and professional as possible as with a couple of CdjNX2000. Which would you go for? Looking forward for a great advice/ answer. Pedro.
If you aren't bothered by using laptop them I'd recommend a DDJ 1000 for anyone wanting something that's even closer to club standard CDJ Nexus 2 setups. The mixer is 4 channel and has way more effects. And is stand alone like this. The decks are the closest to a cdj and are the full size mechanical. You just have to use a laptop.
Why are dimensions and weight downsides? Look at it from a different perspective ! I bought myself this XDJ-RX2 because it's only a 4th of the weight of my flightcased NXS(2)-set, so I can easily carry it to those harder-to-reach gigs. It's lighter than 2 CDJ's together, and weighs slightly more than a DJM-900 NXS2.
Hey Leon. You're not wrong. :) When doing these reviews, I need to consider all types of DJs and the different scenarios which they will encounter. The dimensions and weight aren't downsides when comparing them to your previous setup. However, if someone is used to rocking a DDJ-RB, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the huge difference there. At the very end of the video, I do make it a point to mention that the score is deceptively low because of dimensions and weight. For a lot of DJs, this is the right choice for sure.
Thank you for telling me I'm not wrong. I was so worried I would be..... You should not compare it with a DDJ-RB. That is an empty shell with no displays, no processors, no connectivity, no power unit. Nothing! It's like comparing a scooter with a bicycle. In the video you make it look like the XDJ is impossible to carry. I just carry it over my shoulder, like a handbag.
David, why did you choose a standalone mixer (integrated display)? Why mix without a laptop? I will get a mixer and do not know whether I should choose a standalone mixer or a mixer + laptop and software. What are the pros and cons? THANK YOU keep it up! 😏
Can you adjust the space between the beats on the screen? I.e make the space between the beats wider, so it looks like something like the waveforms in Serato DJ. Great review anyhow! thumbs up
I've had the RX2 for a year now and it may be just me but the display on the RX2 when beat matching doesn't flow properly. Using a laptop is much better. Am I doing something wrong. The software is upto date.
Does the crossfader have that awful volume ducking in the middle on curved mode. Why they keep forcing that on people I don't know. Don't know a single DJ or situation that would use volume ducking when the crossfader is in the middle
Hi when you first use this ? does it need to be connected to a laptop. lets say I bought it. can i just plug in my USB with mp3 files and use it ? or do I need to connect it to laptop and mess about downloading software ?
I just got into DJing and I haven't found anything telling me not to buy this. Though I'm afraid there might be a updated version coming out and that's what puts me on the fence.
It sorta already has! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bAgtTVbhD_U.html The curse of the digital DJ is that something new is always around the corner! :)
There will ALWAYS be another version around the corner. Accept it or you'll be on the fence for the rest of your life. If you just got into DJing you won't need all the bells and whistles yet for quite some time as you will be learning the basic stuff for a while. Pioneer gear have a very stable used market where prices don't move much after the initial price drop. Get yourself a used XDJ-RX and find out if DJing is for you, and if so, what kind of DJ you aim to be. If you take care of the unit, you will probably get most of, or all your money back within a couple of years. It doesn't get cheaper than that. As a pro DJ for many years I have the NXS2 setup and the equivalent modular setup to the RX2: 2 XDJ-700 & the DJM-450. In comparison it has less features than the RX2 and is a few 100 bucks more expensive. I mainly use what's installed in the clubs I play, which means everything Rekordbox compatible since 2009 with a few exceptions. Then and when required to, I bring my own gear, and in 19 times out of 20, I bring my small setup instead of the NXS2. Why? It's still better than half of what's installed in many clubs, and it's MUCH easier to carry and setup than a full NXS2 setup. I also don't need to feel the worries that using my personal $6000 gear in an environment I can't control will bring. Finally, all the stuff I need to perform is on the XDJ-700's as the pretty much equals the CDJ-2000 Nexus with a touch screen and a QUERTY search. The DJM-450 lacks the Booth out, and the very few times I really need that, I bring my DJM-800 in a back pack. That is not a problem with any of the RX/RX2/RX3 as they all have the boot out. I hope this little rant helps you to decide to spend some money to get into DJing now rather than later :) .
Why didn't you mention the compatibility with rekordbox performance with a laptop? There's a lot more functionality added when using that, as far as effects, looping and such. Seems like it should have at least gotten a little mention, especially when mentioning it's limited standalone function in those areas
Perhaps, though I wouldn't recommend someone to buy this to use as a controller in that way. It's functionally equivalent to the DDJ-RR, which costs less than half the price, and is much easier to move around. Or, you could get a significant "upgrade" by getting a DDJ-1000. Not only do you save $500, you gain two channels and you still have nifty onboard displays. I should've mentioned it... but I don't necessarily recommend it.
pioneer will always be pioneer if this unit had 4 channels it would be sick but pioneer as a company would lose a lot of money beacuse of that cuz nobody would buy cdjs anymore so they cant do that .. i think the new denon prime looks pretty cheap they wanna be like pioneer but they will never reach the same level as them on the quality .. and one more big problem is that prime doesent run on rekordbox and rekordbox is the best software out there i heard the softwere on denon its pretty laggy and full of problems but hey do what u think its best :) im sticking with pioneer all the way :)
Tbone Beats Denon kills it dead in the water, it has a touch screen, a sata hard-drive bay, sd slot, 4 us connections, is standard 4 channel, onboard effects unit, go watch laidback luke he has a video on the unit which pretty much explains what's all there. I used to be a pioneer fanboy but ever since I switched over to the denon primes, I haven't looked back. It takes some getting used to the prime software and workflow but the prime 4 is compatible with recordbox, serato and all major software platforms. I already pre-ordered my prime 4 and if it's anything like the prime gear I already have, I will be traveling light AF in the future.
@@markkelvisar9544 Never had any problem with lag at all, I used to be a pioneer fanboy myself, but the sc 5000's are way better, in terms of built quality, ease of use, and downright reliability, mine were still playing after having been in literal pouring rain for over 5 hours. My nexus give out after one beer having been spilled on it and an expensive repair to boot. I will give you the software is not like recordbox. But prime is compatible with recordbox, you can import all your data without any problems to prime, hotcues and all. It takes some getting used to but it does all it needs to do. I have been using the sc 5000's for nearly 2 years now and have yet to encounter any problems. If you have any doubt about denon they used to be the industry standard that was until pioneer started paying big names to use their gear, the rest is history. Also if you ever get a chance to check out a denon sc 5000 in real life, tell me how their built quality of the sc 5000 is, they are imho better built then any plastic pioneer, the sc 5000 are full metal jackets. The prime 4 is no exception to that rule as it's chassis is full metal as well. So in terms of built quality they are ahead of pioneer. You pay more for pioneer because of their name, not because of more features or built quality.
Is there much difference between the RX and RX2, Except the price. Looking for one of these DJ controllers as I love mixing my own music and don't want to use a laptop. Is the RX just as good as RX2 just with added features that I may not use. Is it worth getting RX2 or RX.
Please... stop it... they won't do that... you can read the reason why in like every second comment on youtube... please grow up and study economics to understand, that they wouldn't destroy the sales on their cdj line ever...
I have a question about the QSC speaker mounted behind you. Is that a K8? Also how is it in a room of your size? I’m considering getting a large qsc or EV speaker for my room (I live in a fraternity) and I’m wondering if it would fill the room with crisp sound and heart thumping bass
Hey Daran! It's a K12... there's actually a pair of them in here, but one is out of frame. :) The room I have them in is 1100 sq. ft. with ~8ft. tall ceilings, and they are more than I need (though if I were throwing events, I'd add a KSUB or similar.) For not having the sub, they sound really good, and have a really full lower-midbass/upper sub-bass if you have the "deep" setting selected. Midrange and top end is perfect; I love the way they sound. They also seem really willing to "throw" sound a long distance without having the volume up too far... hard to explain. I find myself surprised at how well I can hear things at low volume when I'm standing quite far away. Looks like there is a "version 2" out, now: amzn.to/2MKo8Ey To better answer your question, I've used a single K12 to power small house parties and such, and it's more than up to the task. Hope this helps!
Say one night I was feeling a little nostalgic and yanked my old vinyl out of the closet and wanted to play or mix some tunes, do all the same effects work when phono is selected?
Intresting Review ... Although This is like watching The "big bang theory" as a dj review channel Lmao ;D All im gonna say is : It's a great price , its less than a one cdj price wise for it and you have a complete set up!!!! I know resident Dj's over here that sold there nexus setup to buy the last RX because of the Price as its perfect for home set up and preperation. Its not about having a club setup in your BEDROOM. Its brillant!!! for price and build ... 7.5??? Really?? , nah its a 9+ . For beginners , or Pro djs with no space at home , or that have just had kids , and cant win the "i need NEXUS SETUP" battle with the wife... Lol (+ if you want more effects buy a RMX 1000 later on ).
Why are you filming this on a GoPro and more importantly on the “wide” setting? Not trying to hate but it’s hard to be interested when the fisheye effect is all I’m seeing
Download Rekordbox for free here: rekordbox.com/en/ However, if you want to use it "as a controller" you'll need Rekordbox DJ (with "Performance Mode") which you would have to buy a license for.
Wait so do u have to like analyze ur tracks in the record box dj software on the computer and then plug it in the controller. Or can u just put the flash drive in the computer and u can analyze it from there
Both. You can plug your usb in and play straight from that. You can also put your tunes through recordbox and sort your loops, cue points etc ahead of time.
You don't need a laptop at all. If you decide to use one anyway, here are the system requirements for Rekordbox DJ: rekordbox.com/en/support/system.php
It mainly depends on your requirements and budget. A used XDJ-R1 would give you standalone (non-laptop) functionality, but it's getting a bit "long in the tooth". Another way to stay laptop free is to buy individual components. Personally, I went with: * (2) Pioneer XDJ-1000s || amzn.to/2I69h3q * Pioneer DJM-850 || amzn.to/2M85yoF Of course, this type of setup is more expensive, coming in at about 2 grand. However, I was able to find refurbished players and a used mixer, saving me several hundred dollars. You could also replace the 1000s with XDJ-700s and get a cheaper Pioneer mixer. I liked the 850 because I use four channels and I like Traktor certification. If you don't care about being tethered to a laptop, the DDJ-1000 is indeed the bee's knees... amzn.to/2tdS5EN
how is the sound quality on a decent system, especially with turntables plugged into the phono inputs? I love the feature set and all of that, but I play tons of wax so I'm curious.
Heya, sorry for the delay. I've only hooked it up to a pair of QSC K12's, which are great, but it's certainly not a "big production" setup. On there, it sounds great. The guy who lent me the XDJ-RX2 is in a band called Cryztal Grid, and they have connected both to high-end club rigs and recently played an 8000+ festival in Athens, Ohio. I heard no complaints of sound quality! (Though, admittedly, he didn't have turntables connected.) By the way, Cryztal Grid is a pretty cool electronic duo which combines DJing elements with saxophone, live drums, and MCing. They're pretty dope, so I always try to give them a plug. :) Learn about 'em here: passionatedj.com/episode-141-cryztal-grid/
@@PAVEL-JAKL honestly I have used the cdj 900 nexus which have the same jog as the 2000 and if feel close. The Rx is not as good for scratching but if ur a house dj lot of EDM then the jog Is good for matching
@@PAVEL-JAKL ddj 1000 is not standalone so it requires a laptop. But yes the jog wheels are better on that. I would prefer this anyday. You have few points of failure, better reliability then a laptop with serato or RB and a real screen so it does not look like your checking Facebook mid set
I dont understand what the big fuss is about CDJ's . . .they are very limiting and a major let down in terms creative expression to be quite honest...for the price they are actually a huge waste if money... they are good for putting your baby to sleep with a boring house 'journey' mix though...
Never get rid of your Macbook Air 256GB SSD intel i7 13". w Serato DJ Pro, 💡💡💡, the Lappy becomes your backup. Any standalone is man made as well a laptop. Both can crash. Use powered speakers. No worries House music all night long, house music house nation dont confuse it w edm.
Sounds great until you use Rekordbox and find out how much of a piece of crap it is. At least with Serato I was able to use my old controller right out of the box and only took a little setup and analyzing to get up to speed. Rekordbox audio drivers however will not work correctly with my current Mac OS 10.4 and the software constantly freezes and I have 16 GB of RAM and tons of disk space. Not happy at all. $1700 and I have yet to use it at a gig, and I bought a replacement controller for my Serato setup and was right back in business within minutes., Pioneer needs to scale down Rekordbox a bit because it is just another new age bloated piece of software. I guess if you can deal with the frustration of the freezing software while you prepare to export files to your thumb drives and use the controller without a computer as it was designed then you should be fine but in my case I would like to use the computer as well to access my full library but I guess I have more to learn about how Rekordbox functionality works. But so far not impressed.
