Damn you Z ! First you made me buy the TA-10 and now the TA-30 ! Your review is very accurate. It gets hot, very hot. Even the volume knob gets hard to touch after a while :) but damn this thing sounds good !

I thought many times that I liked the sound of my tube amps better than the live sound or accurate sound. It's not all matching the master tape in re-creation in the house. Audio in the home has to do with you the listener.

This is why a preamp is essential. All gain issues corrected by a preamp that remembers each input's volume (almost all of them). All amp dials at noon all the time. The fear of headphone and eardrum explosion compels me...

hey zeos, if you enable developer options in android you should have an option for "disable absolute volume" which should disconnect the volume on your phone and the amp. That should allow to change the input volume without the max volume issue over bt. Hope this helps man, great stuff as always

So let me get this straight, they're selling a $700 headphone amp with a volume adjustment that is functionally useless and a fuse that fails under normal use? Who has $700 to spend on a headphone amp that would ever be interested in a product this flawed? I genuinely don't understand the market for things like this. For $700 you'd expect to get an amp with a volume knob that is actually useful...

I mean. Audiophiles put up with a lot of shit for what could be considered mediocre gains in "performance". At least this monster ONLY costs them $700 and its flaws can be dealt with. I mean if you are a millionaire you probably buy 3-4 of these as backups anyway.

I agree, for $700 there are better value tube amps. Perhaps something from the Tor Audio line ups. Audiophiles put up with qc problems & mediocrity, but they shouldn't have to.

Zeos tubes infact do not burn in, it is the period of which the heater gets up to temperature there for causing more thermal emission from the cathode of the tube, that makes the sound difference, tubes do not need burning in, it is a common missconception, just the heater coil needs to get the cathode up to temperature.

However tubes do change over time as they are used, eventually they lose so much performance that they will need replacing. The electrolytic caps will be the same deal especially in that furnace environment (they are 85°c rated)

I have had brand new tubes that buzz or hum and that hum does not subside until about 50 hours of constant use. Then I consider a tube "broken in".

Hmmm, guessing they are brand new (not new old stock) all of the nos tubes i have tried some being right out of the boxes, didn't seem to have that effect, the first 10 minutes they were a bit quiet and gave off a little bit of white noise other than that i don't find a difference. To each their own, i believe you when you say there is a difference though.

With an amplification end-stage like that, I doubt it's a hybrid. The little ones are the gain stages, the big one is the power stage. Maybe they converted the numbers a little.

Thanks for your genuine detailed review!!! We believe the heat is due to the tube's getting hot during the usage, we personally loved it for its sound quality and clean output with high amplification. It drove our Senn HD600 like a charm bringing out beautiful details.

I frequently used my tube-rolled TA-20. I’ve never felt the need to have a gain switch. The power output of the TA-30 may be different but still. Now that the TA-26 has dropped on the market including on Drop, I am hoping that the next amp in the xDuoo line-up will be a “TA-35” where they drop the DAC from the TA-30. On paper the TA-26 seems underwhelming but as there are no reviews yet, I’ll wait and see but it’s more than likely that I will hold out for the “TA-35”. We’ll see how it goes.

I wonder if there is some potentiometer or resistor in there that could be tweaked. Or get some 0.1% 3W resistors and TRS plug and TRS jack and wire up an external attenuator.

The argument for this amp however is it can add that tube smoothness to headphones that don't normally react well to real tube amps.

@@hamedshahr Generally planars don't perform their best with output transformerless(OTL) tube amps. However, tube amps with toroidal output transformers such as the ones from Tor Audio should be okay with planars.

High end DACs need burn in too. I just got the Holo May DAC and it took 5 days playing it 24/7 for it to settle and sound good.

I wonder if switching to a different substitute tube will fix the gain issue.... Such a shame that a design oversight can be made..... Its basically useless as an amp unless you can attenuate the input.

One more thinks, HEADPHONE AMPS, THEY DO NOT NEED XLR BALANCE CONNECTION, IT IS SNAKE OIL, HIFI BOXES (PRE&AMPS)THEY COULD BENEFIT OF 100% BALANCE CIRCLE XLR BUT HEADPHONES. (defiently not a serious comment) There is also the HWA codac xD . You 'mericans will never get it! It is part of huawei Btw it sucks!!! It can do 100ms to 1000ms and up to 96kHz 32bit BUTTTT it lags on the Q5s pared with a Huawei P20pro on balanced audio quality for the current connection strengh. It clipps and not silences itself so you get loud pops and even on 700 kbps like LDAC it sucks but goes up to 900 marketing quoted: "1. In principle, "HWA" stands for Hi-Res Wireless Audio and is based on the announcement of Huawei and Savitech on the March 27, 2018, to ensure the sound quality of wireless audio. 2. HWA certification grading has three different level including Gold, Platinum. Applicable products defines is to fulfill the following specification.
