In this episode, we rehouse and go over the care for the Xenesthis immanis or "Colombian Lesserblack".
And I'm NOT including a link to the 10-gallon Barbarous Growth inclosure this time because the last time I went to buy some for myself, they were all sold out. ;) haha

Thanks for the vid Tom. I think you suggested as such, but is the spider's forever home? Just wondering, as if they end up with an 8 inch DLS, the width is not much bigger than that and wanted to confirm you deem that sufficient. I've seen some rules of thumb that with terrestrials the length should be around 3x leg span and the width 2x (though this varies a bit). Really value your input, thanks.
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders Год назад
Hello! No, absolutely not. This is a "for the time being" home. If it hits 8", the container would be too small. At 8", she'd be going into something around 8-10 gallons.
@IAmTheHound
@IAmTheHound Год назад
@@TomsBigSpiders Hi Tom. Really appreciate the reply. But I'm a bit confused. I calculated the gallons of the enclosure in this video (19in length x 9.5 in width x 10.75 in height) and it came out as 8.4 gallons. Unless you use imperial gallons, in which case it is 6.99. For the avoidance of doubt, what enclosure outer dimensions would you recommend as minimum for a full size adult of this species? Also, dry or moist sub (sorry if the latter question is answered in the video - I forgot if so)? Thank you. :)

Would love to see more like those for comparison purposes between similar tarantulas in the same genus. @TomMoran is it possible that juvenile females of X immanis will show femur coloration? I have a 3.5" specimen that has purple femurs (and I assumed it was a male based on this fact,) but I noticed you had posted a pic on Instagram a while back of a female juvie X immanis sporting brilliant purple legs.
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders Год назад
I think that I might have said "her" as a slip; I wasn't sure if that one was a lady, and I was actually worried that the pink on the femurs might be the sign of a male. That said, I have seen some photos posted up of supposed sexed females that are showing some pink/purple on their legs.

My Immanis has just had a weird molt. One of her back legs came out bent at a 90 degree angle. The molt itself was seemingly successful with no retained skin, so not sure what’s gone wrong there. She’s still spunky, eating and not fully grown yet so I’m hoping it’ll right itself over future molts.
@TomsBigSpiders

If it's bleeding just a little, you can try putting corn starch on it. You can also use super glue to close it if it's bleeding a lot.

I don't know that spider is from the mountains of Columbia. But Columbia is a jungle. Are you sure it doesn't prefer something that hot and humid?
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders Год назад
The substrate is moist at all times and it has a water dish. So, it has the moisture it needs. As for the temps, it has been growing quite well with temps in the 70s. Although many species of tarantulas come from areas with extreme temperatures in the wild, they will hide in burrows to escape the extreme heat.

I'm from Colombia and somehow, some way I got one. My first tarantula and is very likely to be a female according by breader. Unlucky for me I got scared by her while changing her enclosure, she molted three days prior and in a blink of an eye she run, I tried to put a bin over here to catch her but she was faster and I caught her leg... :c She had a white tear coming out her leg, few minutes after she dropped it and now she is strangely doing fine, even not so shy as before because the day before I got her and she was hiding and using her legs to cover her up, after the accident she went into her hide and cover herself, few hours after she was full extended and out her borrow. I am still afraid of losing her and I am feeling like garbage for that mistake. I learnt she liked higher humidity in her enclosure. Something makes me feel worse is that she was so kind and slow, I really appreciated that as she is my very first tarantula and after what I did, you know, feelings are making me feel way worst.

Hey Tom such a beaitiful spider and a great video . This is my response i have posted on a few forums and facebook .Is the dark den the new exotics lair? toturing tatantas for views . He had already been deleting the negative comments from his" can tarantulas swim" video . But the fan club are all saying how amazing he is for making such a great video . The worst but for me was on about the third dunking he gave one spider when that big air bubble comes out . Or the obviously scared blondie that was not floating like the smaller spiders . He does a good job of making the video look organic and an amazing surprise to him but i make videos and know fully well this was the result of good editing . I wander just how many spiders will be "going for a swim"as a result of this video now . I hope it was worth it for the views . Another possible topic for you . I love your pod cast but never v really know the best way to get coments to you ? I listen on audible but if you pick up comments on another podcadt player i will put then on there . Thanks for all you do Tom i try to spread your message and get you more listeners when i can .

Hello! I haven't watched either of their videos in many years, so I'll have to reluctantly take a peek and see what he did. It wouldn't shock me, as a lot of these people who are making spider videos do so for money. They are getting paid by adds, selling merchandise, and by getting free stuff. In order to get views, they have to do more and more shocking things. It honestly makes me sick. I'll take a look, but I'm sure that it's going to make me upset. You can leave comments on www.tomsbigspiderspodcast.com or now Spotify has a way to comment. Thanks for the tip and for the support!!!

@Tom Moran Thanks Tom I just thought you might want to be aware of what he did . I have since felt a bit bad for starting the post wordings it the way I did. It's been pointed out to me that maybe I should have contacted petco first before making the post, and that's a good point . I watched his video fairly early and saw what was a reasonable negative post in his comments get shouted down by his fan club. After sleeping on it I decided I wanted to add to the post on the comments to say I thought he was being needlessly cruel for views . It's not like he was writing a paper on the effects of submersion on various tarantulas . Anyway, I found negative posts had been removed . That's why I got upset and made the post you have seen on various forums and Facebook groups .

From what I have witnessed, my Lesserblack has not bothered the plants in its enclosure. I’m aware that his species is one that develops symbiotic relationships with small species of frogs; in that the frog will guard the spider’s eggs while the frog is granted protection from predators. The Dotted Humming frog is one such species to establish an alliance with tarantulas. I wonder if this relationship occurs in captivity. Not that I would endorse it. His frog species may be banned from export and not available, if it’s not here already.
