The best part is the animation and voice are SO in sync to show that Malos, psychologically, was just broken in the centuries following the events in Torna And the music pairs perfectly.
Not a Xeno game if you aren't trying to find a meaning to your existance, regardless of how good or horrible that turns out. Doesn't matter if it's the protagonists, party members, side characters, the main villains, doesn't matter...that fear that existance is ultimately meaningless comes for them all.
This song isn't the only emotional gutpunch of a song, but it certainly one of the more impactful ones especially due to context. With the two biggest other ones I would say being The Tomorrow with You and Drifting Soul. There isn't a Xenoblade 2 fan who doesn't immediately respond emotionally to those songs.
"I just.. want... to save..." This song is so devastating to me cause it plays during one of the most tragic scenes of the series, it still makes me cry after I've seen it like 10 times already (said scene is the ending to Torna -The Golden Country-). The song generally plays during sad character-driven moments. Another song that immediately will drive a Xenoblade 2 fan to tears is Drifting Soul.
The other version of this song, Desolation, is a piano only version that sounds just as good as the full orchestra. Xenoblade has a good few of these songs that set the mood for tears, I’m glad you were able to hear it.
When the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 soundtrack goes for your emotions and you have played the game, you can close your eyes and see the scene playing out just by listening to the music. The only other piece of music that does this to me is the music to the Throne Room Scene in Return of the Jedi.
Yes! Wasn't sure about requesting this one since the tone is so different but glad I did. Beautiful song, and as you noted it sits in this weird place between joy and sorrow. When the choir coming in around 2:50 it feels like a glimpse of heaven to me, as if all the emotions that come with life (and loss) are reaching up as high as they can go. And then at 3:30 it's like a feather slowly falling back down to earth. The scene with lora at the graveyard absolutely destroyed me.....this song plays during some of the saddest moments ive EVER witnessed in a video game.

This is cutscene music - it plays during some of the most emotionally impactful moment of the game. It tends to make people cry. There is a piano version of this song, too, "Desolation". WWY is one of my most favourite songs in this game, though overall, the entire soundtrack is a masterpiece.
This song is just so beautiful, it plays at some of the saddest moments for an amazing character. Especially knowing the backstory and significance it just hurts
What makes Xenoblade's soundtrack so good is the variety of songs the games have for each emotion. They are so good at writing songs that fit each emotional moment.
Xenoblade 2 has this odd reputation of being the Gacha Waifu game with the tig bitties and sexy designs...but all the complaints are surface level. Those of us who know and trust Tetsuya Takahashi's games knew we were in for an experience and Xenoblade 2 matches and in some ways surpasses its predecessor. The clincher for me was Takahashi/Monolith's long, LONG history with Yasunori Mitsuda and his music direction. I trust Mitsuda's direction for ACE, Hiramatsu and Kiyota, and I trust in Takahashi's storytelling. I won't spoil things because Xenoblade 2's story has to be experienced, but this song comes at very sad and pivotal moments in the story. There's a second version that's primarily piano called Desolation that's even SADDER and that's for the real big moments.

Sure, by the end of it xenoblade 2 can actually get pretty great story wise, but it's really a shame it wastes half of its run time in stupid anime cliches and fanservice that over stays it's welcome. We really didn't need to waste so much time around a party member's family-wide fetish. If xenoblade 2 cut a lot of that and focused more on what the series was known for, it could have been an all time classic like the first one. Xenoblade 2 shills say it's unfair that the game is known for being shallow, but when most of its marketing and half of its story is like That, well, it's just the game reaping what it sows.
@@hiccupasterisk worst take I've seen in years. If a character with boobs throws you off, maybe you should reevaluate yourself. Anime cliche was always a huge part of Xenoblade. Get over it. Xenoblade 2 actually managed to tell a story that actually is sad. Xenoblade 1 doesn't hit that at all. It's 2 different stories. If your argument boils down to: oh but a character has big boobs and it's anime, it's a stupid argument.

What... clearly he/she went with the mainstream view of the game... stupid argument , I myself went on with the series , enjoyed it laughed and cried... those boobs didn't bother me as much , I've seen worse fanservice . Those scenes doesn't even last... I go on and enjoy the story for what it was trying to tell, instead of trying to linger on those moments of fanservice and trying to nitpick the game like a reviewer😂.
@@roddypantheon well yeah that is my view as well. They didn't even market it with fanservice. Unless showing one of the main characters is fanservice marketing somehow. It's one of the best written characters in the series and somehow her having big boobs is somehow destroying her character? Also the anime cliche moments were to bring a little bit of light-heartedness to the story in between. It builds characters. Also Xeno 1 had tons of these cliche moments as well.
It reminds me of "A Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Both songs have such an emotional yet controlled sound. I get goosebumps/almost cry whenever I hear either track.
Of the emotional tracks on XC2 my favorite one is probably either this one or The Tomorrow with You. That song has such amazing build up and when the drums kick in halfway through it’s amazing. Such impactful motifs all around in this game. The songs accent each other so well also as you’ll find the same or similar themes and motifs in many songs. Ties the OST together nicely.
If I had any song that I'd wish to see you experience while playing any game it'd probably be this one. That's how involving the scenes that include this are.
People like to rag on the Voice Actor somewhat but mostly the Voice Director for large parts of the game, and it's not unwarranted, but one piece of criticism I will never understand is the people who say the Utterly Defeated/Crying Moments sound like s**t... Particularly the one that plays during this song after a significant death, the character sounds like an absolute mess and it's the most real crying scene I've seen in a long time because if you're a young lad breaking down in front of the corpse of someone who just died saving you it's not gonna be some anime rage at the sky screaming act (which admittedly does happen earlier) or quiet single tear thing but an Ugly Cry with a couple voice cracks and chocking on your own breaths...
I agree with all your points. To why so many people think it sounds bad, I think it's cause we're so used to watching extreme emotion in standard Hollywood fashion, where strong anger and grief are shown as more subdued and subtle, but sometimes those extreme emotions come out in very ugly or uncomfortable ways.
The pain from this song reminds me of the first VGM that made me cry “I don’t want to say goodbye” from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky

With regards to non-VGM with a similar feel, I immediately thought of a couple of other soundtrack pieces that gave me a similar feel. The first is Jinora's Light from Legend of Korra (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FWT5uHzAFIg.html), which is also very short, very emotional, and structured in a way that mirrors this piece quite nicely. The second is one I became aware of because of comparisons to Jinora's Light -- Oogway Ascends, from Kung Fu Panda (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KtMnDmuhKQs.html). What all three share is this very bittersweet feel -- something good happened, but at a serious cost. I don't know the context of this song, but that's the sort of impression it gives me.

Could you please react to more Kirby music? The Kirby series has an incredible soundtrack with a pretty wide range in music styles. I know you reacted to one song already, but you haven't seen any yet. Some recommendations I have are C.R.O.W.N.E.D., Masked DDD, Meta Knight's theme, and pretty much every final boss theme from any of the games. Trust me, you will be blown away.
If you want a track similar to this, I can't really think of a non vgm, then the main ost (or title theme) of Xenoblade Chronicles 1 really reminds me of this song and is also amazing. So I'll put in a request for that song.
