READ MY XERO SHOES HFS REVIEW: thatfitfriend.com/xero-shoes-...
The Xero Shoes HFS is a great minimalist training shoe. This model makes you feel as though you're running and lifting barefoot and is super lightweight and flexible.
I personally love training barefoot, so I was really interested to see how the Xero Shoes HFS would do in the gym and for casual runs. This model is somewhat of a hybrid between a barefoot running and training shoe.
In this Xero Shoes HFS review, we're going to break down all of the essentials that you need to know about this shoe before investing.
0:00 Xero Shoes HFS Pros
1:37 Xero Shoes HFS Cons
2:57 Performance
6:14 Xero Shoes HFS Worth It?
6:54 Xero Shoes HFS Sizing
7:48 Price
8:17 Construction
10:29 Wrap Up Thoughts
Overall, I've enjoyed my time training in the Xero Shoes HFS. They do a good job with running and provide a nice flat surface to splay the toes and lift from.
I do think that if you're new to barefoot training and lifting, then you may find these uncomfortable at first, and I'd HIGHLY suggest acclimating to this style of training and shoe before going all out with your training in them.
For the high-performing lifter and runner looking for a barefoot shoe, I think they'll like the Xero Shoes HFS.
If you have any questions on this model, or how it compares to the Xero Shoes Prio (review + comparison vids coming soon), hit me in the comments!

My first entry to the barefoot shoes and didn’t disappoint. I recently ordered an inov8 and vivo so that I can have something to rotate this shoes with. I think I’m going to keep only my ONs for long distance running & maybe my fave Nobull for training and then give away the rest as I am sure I wont be using ‘em anymore. I wish barefoot shoes were more affordable. I live in the Philippines and shipping can be rather costly. Awesome shoes and awesome review, Jake!

Hey, Jake! I know minimalist shoes aren't built with stability in mind, but did you try any olympic lifts with them and if so any thoughts on how they performed? Thanks!
@thatfitfriend
@thatfitfriend 3 года назад
Great question! They’re actually pretty great for stability when it comes to providing the body the ability to ground the feet, however, when it comes to Oly movements, stability demands will be different (to your point!). I did not test them in this context for two reasons. 1. For Oly movements, I like having a bit of a Heel to sit back on for performance reasons. It helps support my dorsiflexion/upright torso positioning from a performance output context. 2. The lack of heel makes catching weight pretty rough. There’s not a ton of support, so if you were to use them for Oly movements, I’d just suggest to be cognizant of your mechanics and how you’re catching:absorbing loads! Can they work in this context? Yes! But i think the above two should be considered for every lifter 💪💪

Xero prio vs xero hfs vs primus lite 3 for gym and daily wear (lot of walking)? I currently got primes lite 3 but I am going to return them as they have a hole in the upper mesh just within 1 month so they don’t seem durable. However I did like how they felt. So confused between hfs and prio. I also see hfs 2 out but I have seen mixed reviews about those. Thanks

I started CrossFit 4 months ago. I was already an avid barefoot style shoe wearer and have been training in my Merrell Vapor Gloves and Trail Glove 4s. Which I've been fine with EXCEPT for rope climbs. Had a WOD last week with 20 rope climbs in it and burnt a hole in the bottom of my Trail Gloves. I'd love to find a minimalist shoe that can hold up to volume on rope climbs, but can't find many reviews addressing this. About ready to just snag some Nano Xs to wear only for rope climb days. But have been looking at the Inov8 barefoot shoe and the No Bulls. Any thoughts?
@thatfitfriend
@thatfitfriend 3 года назад
Totally get that - I think even the Xero Prios would burn up fast on rope climbs and they're designed to be a bit more training focused. Honestly, might not be a bad idea investing in a pair of Nano Xs while they're on sale and keeping them in reserve. You can probably find a great deal on them ATM and they'll last a while if you're only using them here and there! I vote Nano X over NOBULL + Inov-8 for rope climb tasks. Also, that’s awesome - keep crushing 💪💪
@rjsmithfiddle
@rjsmithfiddle 3 года назад
@@thatfitfriend Thanks for the advice! Just snagged a pair for $65. I had already purchased a new pair of Trail Glove 4s before I burned the hole in them, cause they were wearing out anyway, so not a massive loss. But don't want to risk the new ones as they're my favorite all around shoe and Merrell mucked up the later versions.

I'm trying these out to replace my 210-XF. The problem with the Inov-8 is that there is no traction on wet fields for sprinting which I do a lot of. Also when pushing or having to anchor, I find that they slip on the turf in gyms. The HFS has 3mm more of padding which feels like a lot coming from the 210 Bare XF. When running in them you can feel the cushion for sure and they stick to the turf much better. I don't do high-abrasion stuff like rope climbs, just need good grip for all terrain, zero drop, low to the ground, good toe-splay, and as light as possible. Is there any other shoe I should look at? Only other one I think would be the Primus Lite III. I tried the Trail FG and didn't like the lacing system as it didn't hold my feed in place and felt like too much material around the foot. Any other ones that you think would be good?
@thatfitfriend
@thatfitfriend 11 месяцев назад
I think the best model for this would be the new Motus Strength JJF but their price point is painful. That model's lugs and construction would resonate with your asks, imo! The Xero Shoes are decent, but I don't find their tread to necessarily be the best especially if an ask of yours is for wet surfaces!
@arykgrosz
@arykgrosz 11 месяцев назад
@@thatfitfriend I thought that the tire-inspired sole would work well on wet grass...at least seems to be better then the thread pattern on the Motus Strength, don't you think? I'm likely keeping these shoes for years so I don't mind the price point. I found that the HFS when sized up a half size feels too "baggy" in the forefoot area...and also looks a little funky (which you mentioned before in your videos). Do you have any idea if they'll introduce other colorways besides black?

@krakatoasundra

@@thatfitfriend it’s a good idea to acclimate to barefoot shoes slowly. do too much, too soon and one increases their risk of blowing out their feet because their feet are not strong enough.
@krakatoasundra
@krakatoasundra 3 года назад
@@thatfitfriend also, it is unnatural for human beings to heel strike while running because it would make the heel hurt. the only reason people do that now is because of invention of cushioning shoes in the 1960’s. striking on the heel will increase risk of knee injury because the knee was never designed for the high impact of running with heel striking. in the 1950’s, it was rare for runners to get injured, but running injury was way more common in the 1970’s.

Ease in, homie. Sounds like your volume/intensity are too high for your tissue capacity and threshold. I have a video discussing this. Decrease frequency/volume and run on softer surfaces as you acclimate. It can take a LONG time to acclimate to running in barefoot shoes on concrete and timelines can vary greatly.
