I recommend to watch the drama Ultimate Note (different actors but it’s the beginning of their story, but they are side characters) - lots of chemistry & banter. This film is the first time ever HeiHua has been covered properly by the author. And he’s writing a script for a sequel film & a drama (with the same actors). TLDR: They have been friends for years. On occasion Xiao Hua had to do a cursed ritual to save a family member - but XiaZi stepped in and did it, condemning him to a fate of being an undead zombie when he dies. All to save Xiao Hua. Nope, they didn’t. In the scene in the hospital Xiao Hua says he wants to bring XiaZi to BeiJing to cure him and XiaZi refuses because he knows it’s not possible …his vision is fading and ultimately he is dying, and he’s cool with that. He stays at the village because it’s comfy and feels like a good home.
