You should just dominate this camera comparison segment with more of these. When I watch your videos I'm actually learning a lot about the cameras, their capabilities and photography. When I watch other comparisons it's all about: camera A good, camera B not as good.

That walking shot really sells it, that looks like a straight out mirrorless camera video with a decent wide aperture lens. You wouldn't think for a second that it was a phone shot! And that's what sells me on the Xiaomi. the X80 dynamic range is jaw dropping, and Super RAW is an incredible three or four step shortcut in image processing, but all of the shots out of the Xiaomi feel like they come from an actual camera. For the extra dynamic range, stick those jpegs in Lightroom Mobile for some tone adjustment and you've got stuff you can publish for work. Gads, hope they release the International version soon!

And yet Sony has been marginalised in terms of market share. Consumers are sick, they have no foresight. Smartphones being purchased annually or even every two years just creates an unnecessary hole in your pocket. But a top tier Sony and you've got a beast for 4 years easily. I'm a fan boy with just a little logic so I get one every 2 years.

I think a good example of a camera company doing something like mobile phone photography is from Leica. Their M11 which allows you to shoot in 3 different resolutions while using the full sensor. It uses internal pixel binning to use more light capture whilst essentially maintaining the clarity. Unlike the Samsung s21 and s22 ultra which are just shambolic in comparison. Also their higher iso range means you can push them quite far. Although to do a relative shot in similar settings with smaller sensors. You do need to do a little math. Pity these are consigned to China only.

You nailed the ending by saying that smartphone photographers would care about the zoom lens and thus giving Xiaomi the Win, I would wish more companies would treat the zoom lenses with the same importance as the main lens, imagine an even larger sensor on that telephoto. I was really interested in the ZTE Axon 40 ultra since the Main lens on that phone is 35mm and that makes me question if the 'bokeh' on that is going to be somehow superior to the Xiaomi, that phone also shoots 16 Megapixel raw files so i am very interested in seeing that comparison. With all that said, you can still easily install Gcam to use something similar if not better than the Vivo's super raw on the Xiaomi phone. One more thing, if you install the PixelCam (one with the yellow icon) and shoot in HDR+ and not HDR+ enhanced with RAW enabled, you basically get double the iso performance without any drawbacks, like the softening that results in stacking or the delay in the shutter speed. I haven't tried it on the Xiaomi 12s Ultra but I do use it on my own Xiaomi phone and it works incredibly well.

Would've been awesome if Magic4 Ultimate was more wildly available. As crazy as it sounds, its full-frame aperture equivalent is even faster than the 12S ultimate. Also, stacked raw is a massively underrated feature. It's gives you the best stills output the phone is capable of in most conditions. One thing that bugs me about ProRaw and Expert Raw though is that they give you demosaiced dng files, which means the ugly noise reduction artifacts are still there, making it more of an over-glorified Tiff than a PRO or EXPERT raw.
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 2 года назад
Yeah that's totally fair. I think that's why it's even more important to explain what those modes are really there for. For me it's a situational tool where I want to shortcut what would have been a bracketed shot on my mirrorless, and I'm good with some of the compromises going in.

A statement about 12s: It is not consistent, but when it hits, it hits hard. So basically it is not very good with a few impressive exceptions now and then. But I don't agree and have another statement: If you are a hard hitter, it often hits hard. This means that a photographer or a good amateur will often get very fine results that will match or, especially with the main lens, will quite often be many times better than Samsung and iPhone. I think that if you are not good at taking photos other smartphone brands might be better at optimizing your images. But if you are a good amateur or photographer, 12s (and X80 Pro) makes a big difference, because they can see its potential and use it.

@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 2 года назад
That's the progress we're seeing though. Would you expect sharp edges on a 7 second exposure from a standalone camera. Especially if there's ANY breeze? What about a five shot bracket? How sharp will those edges be when you stack those images in photoshop or affinity? That image of Soundwave took me three tries, with my camera on a tripod, to get a bracket that lined up perfect and had sharp details. The vivo produced a better finished jpeg handheld on the first try.
@georget10i
@georget10i 2 года назад
@@SomeGadgetGuy I would not and I understand that. But the other problem I have with modern processing is that if I have a tripod handy, I would like a normal manual long exposure, not stacking or other tricks of any kind. Just a longer exposure and I can't do that with modern phones, I can't turn it all off. On LG G4 for example, I can select 1s exposure and the light it captures will be nice and smooth, edges will be sharp. Because it's one continuous shot. I get that modern requirements are different though and what modern phones can do is marvelous. Both options would be best
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 2 года назад

@georget10i 2 года назад
@@SomeGadgetGuy Oh really? Didn't know manual mode disabled all smart camera tricks like HDR and image stacking
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 2 года назад
It doesn't on the LG. If you want a jpg, the camera is going to "process" the RAW file. ALL cameras make decisions on light and color and noise reduction when making a jpg. But if you want an image like the G4, the Xiaomi will have roughly a three stop advantage. Shooting at night, what you need a tripod for on the G4, to shoot a one second exposure, you can create a similar looking image on the Xiaomi in one third the time, and with better pixel level detail, and with better noise grain. So, when the phone finishes off a JPG, it's going to look a LOT different on the Xiaomi, because you're starting with a MUCH different (and better) base of info. That's not a problem with "processing", that the natural evolution of camera hardware improving our ability to resolve an image. I'm a HUGE fan of classic LG phones, and the G4 was a beast of a camera, but if that's your frame of reference, we've evolved RADICALLY since then. If you're already comfortable using a tripod, and you're worried about the (excellent) image processing on modern phone camera apps, you should really start editing the RAW files. You're already doing the hardware work to lug a tripod, the software work isn't that much to add, and you'd have more control over your final output.

All of the comparisons on photos? Why you not try at least video recording to make the final decision ❌️😑

One question from a smartphone photographer... which of the two you would use thinking in night photography and possible printing size?

19:10 I haven't seen focus peaking on smartphone camera since LG. Glad to see Xiaomi take the chance to put it on the 12S Ultra.

Quite a few phones have limited options, it's just refreshing that Xiaomi supports it in practically all photo and video pro modes.

Have you done reviews on the Huawei P40 pro? I can't find it and I would be really interested in opinion because I recently bought one and the camera comparison to my S22 ultra really shocked me, especially considering the P40 pro is from 2020🤷‍♂️

If you're into photography first and foremost, I doubt Apple is going to bring much new to the table on the 14. SERIOUSLY doubt we'll see the sensor improvements which we just take for granted on premium android.

*These comment would never fit on Twitter* I've used the p30 pro since 2019. This year I decided to change my phone for a newer one. I ended up with the x70 pro+ (these names are getting ridiculous) even though there was already the x80 pro. The wide angle camera on a gimbal make more sense to >my< use then a 2x zoom on a gimbal. And then xiaomi release this phone. I admit, the specs aficionado that lives inside my not rational me was so jealous. But then again, I look at these side by side, I look at the real differences between those two and, more importantly, I look at my real use of the cameras and I'm pretty sure I did the right choice. And I made it not because of pixel peeping, cold and abstract specs. I made it because of good and realistic comoarasions that take in consideration the real uses of these cameras. And the only place that I find those real tests and real debate about it is here. If now I have a vivo x70 pro plus (I lost my breath just saying these name) and I'm really happy with it, its because I chose it based on your reviews and analysis. Your channel, and all your bragging and rants, are one of the few places where I can find real information, real comparasions and real opinions from people who talk about photo, not hypes and out of context numbers that look great on paper. As a photographer for more then 15 years that just recently fell in love with photo on smartphones (not THAT recently, I just kept my 1020 and after that my p30 pro for too long), here is one of the few places that I sense that the RU-vidr are talking the same dialect as I do. And it's a great place to be and get some good ideas, informations and analysis. Thanks for doing a really good job and helping me to find out a really good camera to have in my pocket. You are awesome! **Gif from Meryl Streep stand ovation**

And I just realized that I talked this much and didn't say what I wanted from the start: great video! Awesome cameras. Can't wait for the second generation of this partnership between Leica and xiaomi. With better post processing and all they will learn from this first generation of really huge sensors. The future o cameras on smartphones never looked so interesting!! What a time to be a photographer! ❤️

I'm so torn. It's my first time to purchase a flagship phone, and I can't decide between the two. My current phone is Redmi note 10 pro, I love the MUI. But the night pictures that you can take with Vivo X80 is just mind blowing! Both phones are excellent. Somebody help me

Comparing to M4/3 camera. Bokeh is comparable to kit lenses, any prime or pro lens just destroy these two in terms of bokeh quality. Image processing is a bit harsh on these two phones. I would said if someone is looking to step into photography, the better option in my opinion is EM5mk2 plus Olympus 25mm prime to start with. You can stack images, you have bulb mode, you have high res picture mode. You have still the best IS in the business. Plus this is still pocketable combo. However if you limited to smartphones only, these two are not bad. ;)
