Should still have a auto block prussik. Also your locking biner should be the other way. Screw it down so you dont screw up...so gravity helps keep it closed
@TheChrisbeeChicken
@TheChrisbeeChicken Год назад
You don’t need a prussik to rappel. Lol describe to me how you’d release the tension if you stopped descending? I can tell you if you don’t know and it would be a pain. The way he tied off is correct but you should loop around twice and go through the center twice. That’s what it’s designed for. It’s the reason for those ears on the side.
@Nathan-uo9yf
@Nathan-uo9yf Год назад
@@TheChrisbeeChickenthe prussik is only there for backup, incase the rope slips out of your hand, or for some reason you lose your tail end rope, the prussik will catch you.
@vlaaady

In Canyoneering prusic is not used due to the danger of getting stuck under waterfall.Rgen you die from the exposure. Instead the friction should be enough for semi controlled descent even if unconscious.

We teach that during rappelling (especially on single strand) it is highly recommended to add in a third hand for additional safety. This non negotiable when doing rescue operations and high load scenarios. A prussik is not recommended, an autoblock, VT hitch, and distal hitch are great options that reduce the likelihood of it welding to the rope. But my school house way is not the only way. If anyone is looking for great videos on this kind of stuff, AAI has tons of free videos on RU-vid. I'd highly recommend them.

Everyone hating but this is literally how the military does it out of helicopters. No presuik or anything
@nope110
@nope110 3 месяца назад
Doesn’t mean it’s the safest way to do it, the military is more focused on getting people down fast, when I’m abbing I’m more focused on just not dying

I have this item (Amazon purchase) and let me give you the rundown: It’s fine for decent slopes. It’s dangerous for verticals. Full body weight (I’m 220lbs) at full vertical gets squirrely quick. Also, it ends up rubbing rope to rope on descent which, I’m not an expert but, seems less than ideal.

Considering how expensive ropes are, it’s criminal how these figure 8 devices twist them.
@OldManJenkins23
@OldManJenkins23 11 месяцев назад
It evens out I think, since a figure eight is way cheaper than a mechanical descender. Tougher on the ropes, but now you've got extra money for a new one 😂

Hey uhh make sure your climbing gear is rated via UIAA or CE. It looks like that rope was bought off of Amazon. Please be selective with purchased gear when rappelling.

Yeah, that’s all well and good, but it’ll be practically impossible to make that locking hitch while you’ve got the system loaded unless you’re also using a prussik or autoblock of some sort.
@OldManJenkins23
@OldManJenkins23 11 месяцев назад
You should try it, it's a lot easier than you'd think. It takes practice and upper-body strength, but plenty of professionals (arborists mostly) use figure eights alone. I was a tower climber and got rescue-trained with mech. descenders, mech. prussiks, figure eights and safety eights. They all work, just need to know how to use them.
@TimFlynn-rd6dz
@TimFlynn-rd6dz 11 месяцев назад
@@OldManJenkins23 I'm aware that it's possible to use figure-8s alone: I used to do it. The difference is that from an engineering standpoint, the tension applied to the rope would make this incredibly difficult (i.e. "practically impossible") to do what is done in the video both safely and effectively, and from a redundant safety perspective (something that if you were "rescue-trained" as you put it, you would be aware of) the use of a prusik is the most appropriate option as it removes the human error element of accidentally letting go of the rope while tying the locking hitch. You might also benefit from reading other comments on this video from people who actually have this item and how they describe that it is not exactly an incredibly safe tool. Once again, from someone who claims to be "rescue-trained", you seem to be advocating the use of rather dangerous practices for abseiling. They might be fine for arboreal work where chances are you're not likely to be more than a few meters (5-10m) above the ground, but for rope access, technical access, abseiling, etc. it is just not a safe option. Its the reason why leading manufacturers usually stick to a few, known, proven designs.
@nateroberts877

Is that model wearing their approach shoes while abseiling? If so, do any experienced climbers here know if that would cause any issues? Bc if not I might try that (when I can finally get out climbing again)

That awkward moment when your model doesn’t actually know how to abseil. Or how to take any other safety precautions

Don't want to be that guy but this is pretty ugly rappeling technique. Like a spider crawling down the rock. What happened to legs vertical to the wall, body straighten up, look above the shoulder and all of that? This doesn't look relaxed at all. Other then that, don't listen to all those lame climbers in the comments and their knowledge about back ups, shoes, whatever.... Hey climbers! Do you know what ATC stands for in other activities that are way more technical with ropes, gear, systems...? ATC = always the climber
@brianeversole3849
@brianeversole3849 10 месяцев назад
I would not be comfortable with this technique unless i had a fireman’s belay or prusik backup. Also dont buy cheap amazon climbing equipment. Its not worth your life to save a few bucks. Also get some professional training before you try this stuff. Tick tock is not the place for learning this stuff.
