The Journey to the West - the ancient Silk Road had brought trade towards the west and with it - culture, religion, works of art, weapons of war and silk. This passage leads towards the north-western side of the Taklamakan desert and through the Tian Shan Mountains, and this is where you can find the Uyghur (Uighur) people. These people are not Chinese per se, you can see that they are of mixed heritage possibly from the surrounding areas around China, even their language is Turkic, written in the Arabic form. Here you can find grapes grown for wine, Buddhist relics, ancient cities, mosques and a stunning landscape - ones that are not usually associated with China. Xinjiang is laid back, simple and plays a major part in bringing out change in the history of the world during the Silk Road era. Trust us, ibn there done that.
