Following replacement of all the timing chains and tensioners, head gaskets, valve stem seals, water pump, thermostat tower, valley hoses, drive belt idlers and belt, clearing out the sump, cleaning and polishing all the parts before reassembly, replacing the fuel pump and fuel filter, priming the oilways by turning it over with the fuel pump relay removed and the spark plugs out, and then this was the first go at starting it with everything connected.
Even after all that oil priming, it still rattles alarmingly until the oil pressure build up. We've run it once more since this, and it's now much more smoothly.

Secondary cam chain tensioner failed, and bits ended up down the engine and in the sump and oil pump strainer. Head gaskets were original and a known weak point. This was age related work rather than mileage related. Runs nicely now.

Hi Dale, when you replaced the cams, I'm wondering how you got the relationship to the crank right. Did you again fit the special tool to align the cams? Is there a good source of info on how to get this right?

Well done, that is brilliant and very helpful. I've just started doing my 96 XK8. Did you ever do a Part 2/rebuild?

I've started editing the rebuild video, but it's quite a lot longer, as it includes all the clean-up of the valves, tappet clearances and the slow job of re-torquing everything. I will get it finished. Maybe I'll split it into some smaller videos that might make it easier...

It would be great if you split it up! All information gratefully received. Do you remember how how you kept the crank in the correct position? Did you Tippex/mark it or did you use some sort of tool to hold it in place?

Why did you rebuild the entire engine when it only had 56,000 miles?

Afraid not. It's taking ages to do and I ran out of time and energy. The day job just keeps getting in the way. However, thanks for the prompt, I might try and get it back on the list of things to do. Ta.
