This is exactly what I am in the middle of doing now, except I dont have the money to buy $330-$600 of weights. I am taking 1/2" thick cold rolled steel along the rail, using mlok screws. This is adding 8lbs overall. Based on your last video I am pairing it with the Apollo S Max on a 6.5 Bergara BMP. I am really eager to see the results! Thanks for all your content. You have taught me a lot Gavin.
I set my PRS rifle up with weights to balance the rifle around the mid point to an inch forward of the mid point of my schmedium game changer bag. That would be somewhere around 4 inches forward of the magwell. As configured, my rifle's overall weight is right at 20 pounds. The rifle is chambered in 6GT and with the weights, Area419 Hellfire match brake and the 2820 fps muzzle velocity I run my 109 hybrid's at it stays pretty level on the bag... as long as I did my job with good body positioning, recoil management and follow through.
Gavin, is that the 12-13" LOP version? I ordered an Element 4.0 with the C-6 12-13" LOP. I'm 5'7". Pretty sure that will work for me, just wanting your opinion.
Can I ask you a random question (loosely associated to the recoil argument)....I started by shooting air rifles (mostly bullpups) where the scope height is naturally higher. I feel more comfortable with a higher scope height and I see no benefit to having the scope so lower to the bore....bc as long as your ballistic software is configured right it will give you the correct DOPE. So is there any logical reason for me to sacrifice comfort for a lower scope height?? I feel like older-style rifles, shooting with your rifle under your arm pit (rather than as close to center chest as possible to control recoil) and the misassumption that a scope closer to the bore was more accurate has developed bad shooting habits...one of them is that shooters scrunch their heads down to look thru scopes that are way too low. CQB operators are now realized the same thing. They tend to use much higher red dots these days so they can comfortably look thru the red dot while also keeping thier head. Most find it much more comfortable as well. Do you think PRS shooters will start using higher scope mounts? I think the only time this wouldn't be as beneficial is possibly shooting prone
1. A single round is a very small test population, you need more rounds to make your tests proper. 2. Bracing with one hand on top impacts results, don't do that. 3. Manually pulling the trigger introduces uncontrolled variables. Use a mechanical rig to pull the trigger consistently everytime. 4. You mention rifle balance and identify where it should be, but do not identify where it is with or without weights.
One other thing that I never see anybody mention is trying to tune the polar moment of inertia to reduce the muzzle flip tendency during recoil. I'm unsure if this isn't possible because of the available space for the weight kit, but I would think it's possible when using externally mounted weights. Shouldn't mass should be as high as practical, center of mass should be slightly forward of the mag well, and polar moment of inertia should be as high as possible?
Why do you have to add weights. My custom built Wicked Truth Arms 6061 T5 stock with a stock Remington 700 action, barrel and mag clip with scope in 300 win mag weighs 15 lb 9 Oz. According to the postmaster in emlenton pa.. The stock is designed to reduce recoil down from 300 win mag to 243 recoil levels. It cost way less than what you are holding. Really nice video. Thanks
Wouldn’t making accurate measurements require establishing a center of gravity and front / rear weight distribution, and the deltas of those, for the changes made? Maybe I’m overthinking this, as the results, (feel / personal preference), being subjective anyway?
Is there a way to measure the area beneath the curves? It looks like they are probably very close, which makes sense from a conservation of energy perspective. Which means, as you said, there is still recoil but it feels more like a sustained push rather than a sharp jolt.
Backfire RU-vid is looking for a 7-08 rifle to hunt with this year.... Just commented on his channel that you and him should do a series on building him a 7-08 and bring the 2 part series to us on both channels?
You started by talking to how important balance was and may be able to change balanced to win a competition and then you never mentioned it again never checked where the center of gravity was with your rifle wasted video video
