In his second season of trail hunting, Tonic really out-did himself by tackling some of the best hedges in the country. Thank you to all the land owners and hunt staff, Merry Christmas! My Instagram: montgomerythe3rd
That looked incredibly dangerous at times especially when everyone was competing with each other at the start. Good video though and Tonic is a great horse.
Tonic is such a courageous gutsy horse that just takes everything in his stride. It’s heart warming to see professional jockeys just having fun on the hunt too.
It's not always like this, Xmas eve is always a bonkers day with loads of visitors. I'm on the horse standing by many of the jumps, videoing everyone on my phone. We don't need to be part of the carnage anymore - been there done it. Now my horse is older we're happy to watch and pop round a few when everyone else is out of the way.
That would be me, too, if I was still jumping and going on hunts. Stay back and wait for the carnage to pass then pop over. Here where I am in the states they would just do drag hunts where I used to ride. So they could control where everyone went and didn’t destroy farm fields. I’m smack in the corn belt. I quit jumping a long time ago. My balance got more precarious as I got through my teenage years when my chest started blooming, now I’m cursed with massive top heavy, so my balance center is way high. And the ground seemed to get just a wee bit harder every year too. Now I just like to sedately ride western. More saddle to hold on to. 😂
@@tracywilson1356 I have a quick question, and I would really appreciate an answer because there is nobody else I can ask. I am aware that western saddles are very comfortable, but they also seem quite heavy. If I was to get a western saddle, instead of any other saddle, would it's weight make it hard for the horse to go on longer trips out in the terrain, or would the horse be as comfortable as me? (just to clarify, I sat in a western saddle ONE TIME throught my whole life, and that was when I was 5 years old so I cannot really tell how much that saddle could have weight). I would really appreciate an answer.
@@imjusttired9524 western saddle usually weighs in around 30 to 50 pounds. As long as the western saddle is fitted correctly, it isn’t going to cause any hardship to your horse. And there’s more saddle to hold on to for you. More seat. However. There are various types of seats on a western saddle. There’s roping saddles, barrel racing saddles, western pleasure show saddles, trail riding saddles, Arabian western saddles. My saddle is actually a western pleasure show saddle, so it’s not a deep seat necessarily, more of a shallow seat. You’ll just have to try out various styles and see what type of seat is comfortable for you, make sure the saddle tree and bars fit the horse correctly and comfortably, then fit the seat to you around the horse. Always with the horse’s comfort first. You could also try a western style Aussie saddle. They’re a little more like a dressage saddle in my opinion, in their style and cut, but they have a saddle horn and a little more saddle to them then an English, or hornless Aussie saddle. And they’re lighter than a true western saddle when you have to heave it up on a horse that’s taller than you. I’ve never actually ridden in an Aussie saddle, but I’d like to try one out someday. I’m just so used to heaving my western saddle up on my horse that it doesn’t really phase me about the weight. Mine weighs in about 40 pounds.
Oi! Less of the negativity on the cob! Mine always bought me home while many fancy mounts left their riders in the mud!😳😂🐎 Having now watched to the end…….that was mad. What brilliant fun…….but mad😳😱😳😂👍🏻
Tremendous ride! Keeping it together during challenging approach (12:58) and then riding off a challenger over jump (18:10). Polo skills coming in handy on the hunting field. Fantastic!
Didn't look like your usual well mannered class of people. But each to their own. I'm glad you had a good ride. Merry Christmas. Am happy Tonic came away unscathed. How? I do not know. But thank God he did. 😎😎
jockeys are always a bit bargy on hacks ..in my experience..they don't mean it but they think nothing of it to bump into you ...which all of us dont always appreciate.
I really appreciate the relationship that you have with Tonic because I can tell that he enjoys what he does, his ears are mostly up and he is having a good time. I have had several horses during my life time, and one of them I had for over thirty years and I did jump her some, but again it is refreshing to see good horsemanship.
Wow! That's was like watching an action movie!! Whi was going where, what big jumps! Who waa going to make it over all in one pice! Great video!! With all the hoops and hollering sounds like everyone had a good time!! Thank you! Love Tonic!
Great video to watch Monty, please keep them coming. Looked a bit hectic at times but I guess that’s hunting nowadays for you. You seem to have good hunting etiquette tho (even if some others don’t) ..and Tonic is proving to be an up and coming legend, such a star mentality, he really does try to never put a foot wrong. I hope you gave him extra treats and carrots! 🥕 I wish you both health and happiness to ride together! Hope you had a nice Christmas🎄, and have a Happy New Year 😊 Best wishes from Northern Ireland
woooooooo what a day out. That horse is an utter super star. Seriously he can take them at the gallop or jump a wall from a standstill. I was way more back of the field and keep out of trouble but know the thrill of the mad dash toward a big hedge. Wonderful.
looked like a fun time. I found the galloping downhill and jumping so near behind each other looks dangerous. very beautiful scenery and horses and riders all done up! nice to watch!
Lots of happy memories. I didn't start hunting until I was 60 and we never had such a huge field. I was always a non.jumper until the day I rode my husband's horse. As I wen to veer to the left, Tom took hold as if to say"You're not going to make me look a fool" and flew it! Doesn't feel like before the Ban but great video . Thank you
Yes my hunter loved the hunt. Also in the states. Belonged to q registered hunt He was a dream, always made me proud. A real professional. Smart as a whip.
I don't know about anyone else, but I would have been absolutely furious if a hunt went through a field with my horses in it. I just hope the owner of those horses/land had given permission.
All permitted and it is imperative that good will and permission from the landowners is given. I know this land very well and can assure you, permission will have granted
The hunt contact the landowners in advance for permission to cross their land. Given the size of the field with the horses in it the landowner probably felt there was enough room for it not to be a problem.
I’m watching the videos again. It’s such a nasty day so it’s entertaining. Monte, you’re a fine horseman, a pleasure to see how you and Tonic have gelled. It is a bit funny how you two tower over some of the others. Great duo. I have a thousand questions 🤔Thanks for the posts.
Wow that's a lot of horses! (Or it seems like it to a non-rider like me), but I guess it's all part of the experience for you guys! :) Your horse seemed to do pretty well - I enjoyed how his ears stayed "busy" all the time.
G’day Monty & Co ;-) Thanks so much for taking us all on a super adventure with you your fabulous gutsy horses especially Tonic & your daredevil mates, lots of adrenaline action, dodgems, danger, with a few muck ups & absolute nuffies too! How’s your leg mate? Look forward to the next adventure TA With many source blessings with truth clarity love light laughter happiness joy fun play creativity adventures abundance wisdom and may peace be with you all! Victoria Australia 🇦🇺 xox
First time watching and really enjoyed it. I'm from the western USA, and there were times all of you reminded me of cowboys whooping it up, especially when I heard an actual yee-ha. Your horse is a real champ. I wish I could ride one of my boys (stallions) like that, but us old folks with bad knees don't bounce back up like we used to. Looking forward to future videos.
Thank you very much for taking us with you and sharing really breath taking moments in the saddle !! Compared to your hunts our hunts in Germany are a small piece of your cake 😂 - all the best for the new year 🎊 🎉👍🏻👍🏻🥳
Thank god they are. Less injured horses/casualties. This was just pure luck in lots of cases. I think it’s way beyond stupid to endanger animals (and people) with such reckless riding.
I need a glass of gin in hand to go with Tonic on this ride! What a great horse and what horsemanship skills! The speed on this ride! I had to laugh closer to end I think some of the jolly mates at end had some liquid courage beforehand! 😂😂😂❤. Tonic you are priceless!
Some of the looks incredibly scary. I would not trust the other riders enough to do this. Thank you for videoing this and bringing us along! It was super fun to watch this bc I don’t live anywhere that this is done so it’s really interesting. Lovely riding as well🥰
This was wonderful to watch. Thank You for doing this. I remember very young over 50 years ago we had hunts in Ambler PA USA. , but where were the dogs ? and we had a drag leader with a fox skin. This brought back memories.
Shame its still called hunting . I hunted for many years when it actually was hunting and everyone had far better manners or were sent home. We watched hounds work and didn't use it as a free for all gallop. Tonic went beautifully and is a credit to you
@@pixie706 yes it’s a lot different than how I was taught. And I wouldn’t like to be in the middle of it. Even now I try to ride on the wings a bit and give myself space. But… it’s still a great video to watch
Tonic is absolutely focused on what other horses are coming in. He has a very expressive face and his intelligence just glows. My Lord, the horses are so keen when you stop. They just eat up the runs and seeing one another. As you were bashing and crashing with other horses and riders all I could think was how in the world did women do it all side saddle!!
There seems to be a lot of people that don’t follow proper hunt etiquette. Everyone piling on top of each other, cutting each other, bumping each other, practically galloping on top of each other. I went on a few rides when I was young, and if we, any of us no matter how much money we had or social standing whatever, no matter who we were, if we’d behaved that way we’d have been booted right there and told off home alone. We were expected to never ever under any circumstance crowd another going to a fence, never cut, always be mindful of what’s going on around you. Our hunt master wouldn’t have let that big of a field go out all together either. Too many people, to much chance for serious accidents. But you got through unscathed for the most part though. I really thought you had gotten in trouble when that other rider ran right in to you, but you both recovered decently.
its always at the poular meets, such as BD, NYD etc. Lots turn up and don't go out regularly during the season. If they wern't so important to support, I'd have not gone. My line was as his, when he wanted to get Tonic's confidence back. Let the others go first, and hang back a bit, until you can get some distance, accounting for a refusal
This literally looks like so much fun. I would kill to go on a real hunt in Europe, not some of the stuff the states do. Damn it seems so awesomeeeee I’m so jealous 😂
You haven't lived until you've foxhunted We're called crazy, but it's our life. You & your horse galloping and jumping obstacles. At times your hearts in your stomach, but gadsden it's fun. Dangerous. Yes. But our horses are trained professionals, as most of the riders. Really few injuries. Just 4-5 hrs of pure heaven.
Hey - that was exciting to watch. Please upload a little map - of the area...and the course. Would make it all click into place. Bet you were soar the next day. Cheers from USA
