Gomez: "And, you know, this is definitely a different kind of genre, a different kind of, you know, look into this dance style."
Chmerkovskiy: "It's also yeah, it's also, you know, the style is contemporary. And we've seen even this season a lot of contemporaries already last week that were a reflection of a personal experience. And so, there's a there's a different emotion here. This is a fictional narrative that we get to play characters."
Gomez: " Which I find that so exciting because then you get to kind of play around with like the movement. And yeah, we've kind of got like a rag doll situation where it's like starts with mourning and sadness to we see a change and we see him use his powers bring me back to life. And then third, we're doing things together. We dancing."
Chmerkovskiy: "We triumph."
Gomez: "We triumph. I love that word."
Chmerkovskiy: "But it's a great, you know, in the Viennese Waltz. I couldn't stop telling her to keep her frame. Now we have choreography where she gets to be-"
Gomez: "I don't think you understand. It's like, I get happy and I go like that (slumps down). Like, it's just, it's just the way -- it's just the way I move. So it's very fitting. It's something that I think I'm pretty capable of doing."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Xochitl Gomez, actor and Val Chmerkovskiy, dancer - how past martial arts and stunt work helped her prepare for this competition:
Gomez: "It's been really helpful just within balance, I've noticed a lot. And then also just being able to have that kind of connection in the arms. I found that pretty easy just because with martial arts and stunts, you have to be not only in control of your own body, but, you know, lean on somebody else and be able to kind of share that. So I think that kind of made it a little easier when we started doing kind of all the stuff."
Chmerkovskiy: "Yeah, the physicality, just being in each other's spaces is different for people that are not used to that. So I think in that sense there wasn't so much intimidation that you gotta get through. But yeah, she's been amazing and she works hard like we talked about and yeah, she makes me look very good as a teacher."

Gomez: "I don't know. I think the dance marathon, I'm like psssh. I don't know why I find that a little easier. I think it's because everyone's together. And I think people would think that, 'Oh, my gosh, you're like having to be compared to people.' But I go back to like, you know, all my friends and I like dancing at a party - after party. We're all dancing together. That's what I'm thinking about. I'm going to be dancing like, 'What's up, Ariana [Madix]?'"
Chmerkovskiy: "Which is great, you know. And I don't want to change that mindset because, you know, the less she knows, the less she'll worry about it."

Chmerkovskiy: "We rise from the ashes."
Gomez: "Third day I have a day off, mandatory day off because I am a minor. So, I get one day less than other people."
