XPS 15 (2019) - The Best They Can Do

Dave2D review of the 2019 Dell XPS 15 7590 with an OLED. The i9-9980HK is a beast but the thermal limitations of the chassis are still here.
XPS 15 - amzn.to/2OH60QJ
The new OLED 4k display panel is VERY bright and colorful. Awesome for content creation. Overwatch and other moderately demanding games run at a good frame rate on the GTX 1650. The 2019 XPS 15 is still an excellent laptop for content creation but the thermal design of the laptop holds it back

@@ryanb1374 I agree that teacher education is often perceived as a soft option. However, not all students admitted to teacher education have a burning desire to be a teacher. In some cases, a student isn't sure what they want to do, but they definitely want a degree... so they apply for a few courses, hoping to get in to at least one, despite their low year 12 marks. Teacher education is sometimes considered 'the degree of last resort'. It might be the third and least attractive course that they apply for, but with the lowest bar to entry, a student with poor marks might just get a place. In a year where the admission score is lowered, a group of students who normally would not have gone to university are allowed to start a teacher education course. It's not that more students want to be teacher, but that the ones applying to a teaching degree as their "last resort" option actually get a place.

Make sure you upgrade to BIOS v1.2.3 - massive difference for gaming. Undervolting is very easy with TS (do not use XTU as it causes sleep issues). I played a bit APEX and getting stable operation over longer period of time, no issues. I personally love how quiet the fans are when in low CPU tasks and when load is high the noise is actually not bad at all. Also I went for UHD over OLED for better control of screen color profiles.

I'm beginning to think Nvidia overhyped as per usual that MX150 to these laptop suppliers (back in the day) and they have loads of stock, hence why they're still included to this day (while supplies last). I think we're all waiting for 10 series gtx to be included at a fair price in all laptops (notably the 1660Ti and up) although I can't wait for laptops to include the new super chipset from Nvidia (forget the Ray tracing) as their performance, being a 10 series, are comparable to the 20 series but not the 2080/Ti

I agree. Also, not everyone wants a 1080p 144Hz display. From a value perspective the 4K OLED price is incredibly cheap compared to other laptops. The Blade 15 that is being championed has a 4K OLED option prices at £3150! That’s £1000 more than a similar specced XPS.

Hey Dave, great video summary as always, and good on you to point out year after year the thermal limitations of this device, but I think after this many years and this many iterations, I think you should call out their ongoing problems with high DPC latency. It appears all xps models, 13/15 inch since 9x5x series is heavily affected. The problem is so bad and pervasive that just day to day usage causes pops and crackles in multimedia playback.

Not sure if you'll be able to do a review as such, but I was hoping to find a review of a laptop for software developers. I've been watching all of your videos over and over again, but I don't think I really get the info that I need, I don't game much, just once in a while but not heavy games either, for me, the most important things are having a big screen prefferably 4k (but the big question is if I'll be able to use it without windows scaling), light weight, good processor and lots of RAM, at least 16 but would preffer 32... and of course, nvme, maybe 2 slots? The main thing is, I don't really need a graphics card, that makes the laptop more expensive and thicker... Does my question even make sense? haha, thanks, love your channel and keep up the good work!

One more thing! If it is like older models, then it should have two PCI-e lanes connected to its Thunderbolt 3 port (instead of 4 lanes which we see in Razer laptops). Hence it would even be problematic if you wanted to play games using an external graphics card while using the laptop's display.

I won’t be gaming because I have my gaming desktop. Mostly will be used for school and video editing for my RU-vid videos. What do you guys think, did I make the right choice?

What is your opinion on this laptop as an alternative to the standard MacBook Pro for running music production software? In my research it appears this laptop is the best competition

Hi Dave, A great review from a great reviewer, as usual. Could you please consider reviewing Lenovo's new P53 mobile workstation? Being somewhat thicker and now featuring much improved (at least on 'paper') screen options, this could be the mobile device many computer enthusiasts have been dreaming of.

I have the xps 15 and your right when I played DOOM(2016) it throttled. After repasting and putting thermal pads on the voltage chips and PCH and undervolting it works fine

I have the 2018 version of this laptop, it's pretty much like you say, good for professional work (i am a developer) but not so good for gaming. I even undervolted and re pasted it but it still throttles. It still has the best value imo, especially if you take build quality and dells customer service into consideration. That said, i think unless they fix these issues in 2020, i'll pay a bit more and go for a razor or aero 15 next time. Let's hope they follow apples example next year :)

They should do something similar to whatever Samsung does with the Galaxy phones... Some kind of liquid cooling system

Tell that to all Dell users that had issues with the TB16 dock and the 9570. Just check their Reddit to read issue after issue with their laptops. The XPS 15 was _the_ _worst_ _experiance_ ever with a laptop and Dell only gave me the runaround using bulletpoints where everyone knows that A: BIOS is screwed where they lower the throttle temp for GPU after all reviews, not speaking about the DPC latency issues. B: Drivers suck for the KillerWifi, and the the soundcard where it pops/crackles etc. C:Sleep not working at all after Dell disabled C3 Sleep. I actually regret that I did not try a Razer..... But one thing for sure, Last Dell ever.

I'm keeping an eye out for a good developer machine. I am using a 2018 Razorblade Stealth, like the solid construction, but I am getting thermal limited a lot. I don't necessarily need a really fancy GPU and like the goods/feel of the stealth. Want something with that solid design, maybe a bit bulker, without the thermal issues. XPS seems in theory to supply those features but disappointing they are also getting thermal issues.

Exactly the issues that I wanted covered. How is the thermal performance, does the 1650 get you there in games and is the build quality there. Great feedback, I am probably going to end up back in another Razer, I'm loving the silver finish on them, I have been wanting a Lenovo or sleek looking ultrabook to sweep me off my feet but the Razer just seems to do the important things (what is important for me, a graphics card strong enough to game most of your mainstream stuff, a nice clean sleek look that won't be off putting even in business situation, great build quality, and good specs) all a little better than the others.

What the next XPS should be: 10nm intel cpu, 7nm nvidia gpu, and bigger and better heatpipes on the cooler

Hi Dave, great review as always. I hope you may have time to compare this to the new Dell Inspiron 15 7590 (not the 2 in 1). This laptop is basically an xps 15 but with a numpad and slighlty less build quality. Its specs is almost similar to the XPS 15 but unfortunately it is not popular. I hope you can review this laptop soon. Thank you

Nice. It would have been helpful to explain the difference in power consumption depending on / based on the type of screen (FHD, UHD, OLED, etc).

I think Apple took a huge lead in laptop/ultrabook design with the original MacBook Air, and that, years later, Dell leaped ahead of them with the XPS, a design that I still think holds up pretty well today.

Any chance of you doing a deep dive on this laptop? Would like to know if undervolting and repasting with good thermalpaste like the kyronaut (not the liquidmetal) would make how much of a difference in performance when it comes to gaming and premier rendering

Hi Dave! I see in the reviews that you should talk about the gaming options, but which laptop do you recommend for a photographer, because I only use Lightroom and I travel a lot, so, weight is important, but the most important thing is the screen, I need the best quality, good calibration, good accuracy. Thank you very much.

I also don't understand why it is so hard for manufactures to make more heatpipes that transfer more passively to the sides of the device and in the front instead of to the buttom where the laptop often sits!?
