I've travelled on XPTs a lot. The main reason people choose first class is the 'quality' of the passengers. If you like travelling with noisy backpackers and sometimes 'interesting' people, economy is fine.

Meth heads and other undesirables unfortunately in Economy on the North Coast Line. As an Age Pensioner I get generous discount to go First Class. Feel very sorry for all the good reasonable people in Economy subjected to the crappy antics of the minority of low-lifes around them. Only low alcohol beer available on this line too, for a good reason.

I've taken first class on the XPT between Brisbane and Kyogle twice in 2022. Mainly because the fair was discounted at the time i travelled. But i was able to get a nap in the seats due to the extra recline and leg room.

The name New South Wales came from the journal of Lieutenant James Cook (later Captain Cook), who sailed up the east coast of Australia in 1770. He thought that the land looked like the south coast of Wales so he named it "New South Wales".

South Wales and NSW do look a bit similar. The former even has sand beaches.

@@kevinarchbold3704 The captain of any warship (small 'c') is not the same as the naval rank of Captain (capital 'C'). Any naval officer who commands a ship is addressed by naval custom as "captain" while aboard in command, regardless of their actual rank, Most officers commanding a warship hold a lower rank than Captain, and that is still true today. Only larger warships are usually captained by an officer with the rank of Captain. On Cook's first voyage as a commanding officer he had the rank of a Lieutenant, later to become a Commander, and finally a 'post-Captain (a rank now no longer in use) indicating commanding a smaller ship than would normally be the case for a Captain. He was also Captain of Greenwich Hospital (for Navy personnel) in 1775/76. His best known portrait is from there. The national Museum of Australia indicates that, in the painting, he is wearing 'his post-captain’s full-dress uniform'. His wife lived on a pension from the Admiralty of 200 pounds a year until her death. Her three sons also each received a pension of 25 pounds per year. She died at 93 years old and left money for the poor in her area.

Keef78 .. I empathise with your statoabout Australian trains to a point. I live in WA and our trains (not many, but nonetheless) are better than flying - fast, high class entertainment systems back of seats, very comfortable and affordable XPT-like buffet. Queensland trains are awesome in my estimation as well. If you get the chance, check out other systems than just NSW. Even though they're old, i still like your XPTs. The trains that run to/from Canberra are so woeful on every way, especially ride ability and comfort that I'll fly or take a bus in or out of Canberra next time. Also, TransWA intercity voaches are as good as their Prospector trains comfort-wise and having the same back of seat entertainment system, free wifi and smooth ride. Things might change your perspective on NSW trains when the XPT replacement trains start arriving. Happy travels mate👍

I think the reason why people travel in "first class" is not because of the slightly extra legroom and reclining seats but to get away from all the druggies/weirdos/bogans that travel in economy. I myself have travelled in economy class many times and seen all kinds of unsavoury characters on that train. Hence that's why I choose to fly. But I guess if people want to sit back and watch the scenery go by then by all means take the slow old Xpt.

yeah but it should be far far more than that, our trains are woeful.

Umm you know the real reason is speed and frequency right? The plane is just faster and more frequent only HSR can provide similar speeds

At 186cm tall, I find the extra legroom in 'First Class' is worth the extra price, especially for long journeys. Not a fan of being cramped for so long. Hopefully the new trains will roll out soon, that replace the ageing XPT fleet.

I do travel 1st Class. But i would be more happy to pay more for a 1st Class ticket as long as there is a considerable difference between Economy & 1st Class. Because there is no difference at the moment. Better layout & more comfortable seats. Single seats included. 1st Class food carriage. So you don't have to go into Economy to get food. Fold down/up armrests on window. Because they there is no where to rest your arm . Because of the rounded edges. And with the trains being longer will passengers at front get off 1st at their station ? Then train move forward to let passengers at rear get off ?

XPT Economy class is where noisy drunk unwashed people on $1 concession tickets travel. XPT First class is for people who pay their own way and want to travel in peace and quiet.

For the same price you can go first class in a daysitter cabin. Phone charging power point, private and far more space. I would ever go back to the standard FC again. You have to do a phone booking to request these, no option on the web page.

The reason to go in First Class is to get away from the pissed drug addicts and depressingly dysfunction families that unfortunately frequent the XPT’s. Once you have experienced one of the expletive laden melt downs, you will pay the extra $25 all the time.
