The second gear is now closer to the 1st gear in terms of ratio. There was too much gap beteeen them IMO. The 5th gear mod is really the main driving force for doing to gear change. Changing the sprockets effects all the gears. If I changed the sprockets to get more speed on the top end in 5th, I would lose the snappy feeling of the low gears. This is a very noticeable mod and i highly recommend it especially if you're tearing the engine apart for other reasons
by guesstamation I put his MPG around 30. XR650's don't do well with "over" jetting. I'm at 8'000 ft above sea level so I leave mine extremely lean and hacked up my airbox. The 5th gear replacement is really nice, I rode a couple hundred miles on I70 last summer at about 70mph. Anymore than 65-70 without wind protection is just madness. I also have a 1.5 inch lowering kit on mine because I'm short legged, long torsoed.
Great video with spot-on advice. My opinion may differ as to their order, but your first 6 mods are "top 10" on most lists. I'd also mention tires, Barkbusters, suspension setup, etc.
I agree I owned an 03 left the original front tire no super moto stuff I put an 18 rim on the back put a nice big tire changed the sprockets put a Baja kit on it so I could put it on the road put a pipe on it did a little bit of work to the carb not much and that bike flew stock 125 klm I had it goin 170 much better I heard some people 200-210klm I don't no about that though don't really believe it
Great video Canuck! I enjoyed it. You and I share the same mindset. Function over form. Everything must make the bike run better, who gives a crap how it looks?
You could possibly cut the bracket and reweld it to bring it closer to the swingarm but you can't bend the bracket without the bracket or the guard hitting the tire. You could potentially have a tire failure or worst tire lockup if a rock or branch were to damage the bracket. The guard is only there to prevent chain lube from spraying all over. I wouldn't worry about sand otherwise they would have covered to whole chain.
I've finally scored me a 40mm fcr mx carb an throttle assembly off a crf 250. I'm at 5000 ft , looking for jetting info, nice bike great mods btw👍 been my insperation since I got my 94 couple years ago, been doing cam, skid plate bars, vapor, couple others. Hoping to get big fin head this winter to go with this carb. An revalve suspension . Any help jetting this carb will be greatly appreaciated, I know guys got a lot into getting this carb mod down an xr lovers everywhere really appreciate all you've done👍🍻
its a teraflex 140/80-18 (5.10" wide). DOT approved for the street. I had to remove the plastic chain guard and the cut the 2 aluminum tabs off my swingarm to make it fit.
Thanks for the compliment, Sorry but that aluminum protector was made by my brother during his CAD machining course. Unfortunately he doesn't work in the machining field anymore.
Number one BEST mod requires a single purchase and one easy procedure! First you loosen then hoist the fuel filler cap about 24" in the air above the XR....next you push the remainder of XR out from under the hoist (you will no longe use this portion) Finally you carefully slide a brand new CRF450RL (sans original fuel filler cap) perfectly under the XR's cap danging in the air.....next you slowly and carefully lower the cap precisely into place! ...Trouble shooting tip....Some have found the XR's cap does not fit properly and then quick fix appears to be simply using the cap that came with the new CRF.? (who knew?) ..whew! Procedure complete! Now go test ride her! Pretty sure you will be deeply impressed with improvement across the board! MUCH better power and handling! Plus your wallet will now be much lighter as a side benefit! Might even lose weight yourself in the following days if you can no longer afford as much groceries and fast food etc after this upgrade procedure! ? If so it just means things will get even BETTER performance wise both on the road and the trail!
Sova Klr for what its worth.. highway dirtbikes makes some aluminum protection similar to bugcrush3r's. if you're willing to pay for it their stuff also works VERY well together. the handgards can be a pain to mount but they are rock solid. well worth the money
Where did you get your gears at for the 2nd and 5th gear mod? Also, you say highway speeds are still good? as in you can comfortably cruise at 80mph (128kph)? How is your gas millage with the carb replacement and the exhaust? Great Video by the way! Really interested in some of these mods, especially the gearing change!
Nice... No kick starter but only electric? All my Honda thumpers I’ve removed the electric start, casings and all, no need for all that weight, much better response with a lighter generator and bike.. Carb and exhaust mods are a must but never forget the forks and rear unit...
Great and knowledgeable presentation. My next project will be a 650L supermoto 17" wheels and all. No corners will be cut. Can you elaborate on tj 5th and 2nd gear mod and how it will benefit street usage?. Also with sprocket changes I would like to retain the original speedo and dash ashy. Any info on speeders drives for 17" wheels and different sprockets? I would appreciate your input. And now since you mentioned it I'm going to rhumpertalk right now! Any other clubs on the internet that would be beneficial would be greatly appreciated thanks John in VA
William Keahi , yea let's get more how to series build vids. I got hit by a car last August on my xr650. Come to find out my.bike and myself survived but my forks are not alined. Who has tips and tricks to straighten and Get my bike going again
@@elliotthazlett3414 Same for this comment where people will see this later on... Typically the twisted forks is resolved by loosening the top and bottom triple clamps and then bracing the wheel as you turn the handlebars straight-- next time it happens to me I'll make a video 🙂
@@elliotthazlett3414 - I know the feeling, I got too experienced a setback on my xr650 with some front end damage. I was able figure it out but learned much more from a video which was a good thing because it recommends you do it in a sequence when tightening back up the fork bolts and wheels pinch bolts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RXETkZQ62qU.html
This is to much to do for the average person to do but 1 thing for sure that battery on the side of the bike had to go no doubt and that fork brace is a good 1 for sure
Regarding the 2nd/5th gear mod, pardon my ignorance, but how is this mod different than just changing the front and rear sprockets? Don't you get the same result? Say I want to improve highway riding by making the gearing taller. I can go with a larger sprocket in the front or a smaller one in the rear or change both sprockets. Problem solved. How is this mod different or better than just changing the sprockets? Great video, by the way. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Oh ciboire ok, pas tout à fait du même bout mais presque. J'suis à Sorel au Québec. Bah je considère quand même ça dans le même boutte dans l'fond...:)
Sweet Mods' I just bought a 2017 XR650L with only 85 miles on it. I used to have an older 1990's out in CA. I missed running the deserts. Any way. Looking to do that Carb change...Did you need to remold that Clark tank to set that carb?
Could you have bent the chain guard mounts and retain the chain guard with a 140 tire? Id like to run a 140 tire but keep chain guard to help keep sand from pouring on the chain from the monster tire.
Thanks man. Will do. What about carb? Should I use stock carb and rejet? Or upgrade the carb? I need better performance verses the stock. And I'm assuming when I get an upgraded exhaust I'll need to rejet as well.
Hello, great video. I have a question regarding the battery relocation. I seen others had questions and you referred them to the forum post. I have read the forum and I still have a question. In the forum post it is stated to use the battery part # LFX09A2. In the video the part number on the battery is LXF14A2-BS12. Which battery should one order? Are the dimensions possibly different?
eddytimeddy Both batteries are identical except LXF14A2 is a 14 A/hr rating with a cold cranking amps of 210A and the LXF09A2 has a rating of 9 A/hr and 135A cold cranking amps. Manufacturer specs shoraipower.com/lfx14a2-bs12-p66 shoraipower.com/lfx09a2-bs12-p50
I love this bike.Im on my 3rd one since 93.Have not changed since! Wonder why! They are HEAVY tanks for 6ft dudes and over.Ive done about every mod possible. forget cracking the engine with gearing BS.,No need to go internal unless you have to! just go with sprockets and get the right tires for your needs. Cheap and easy!!!
I would have to disagree with ya on that ,the stock xrl at 70 feels like the motor wants to jump ship not to mention it is tachin high, with the mod you get smother shifting and a over drive that drops your tach down resulting in less stress.
Hey bugcrush thank you for the quick reply on the tps sensor, I have another question ,since I am seriously thinking on the fcr mx carb and was wondering how hard that is to hook up, I built my xr650l with nx gearing so im sure ill be able to do it but sometimes when you buy items they dont send clear and informative directions. thanks. also do you have a email I can send pics to ???
To be honest I sold the bike 2 years ago so I'm working off memory. I bought a 40mm OEM FCR-MX off ebay. There is a huge thread on thumpertalk forums referring to my jetting and installation. Just search for, D0T-C0M exactly like that. You'll see several threads that will help you
+Shane Denherder The gears come out of a 1992+ NX650. The second gear can be had at any dealer. The 5th gear can only be had in Europe. Check out this thread, I'm D0T-C0M in the thread www.thumpertalk.com/topic/897543-request-for-compatible-gears-for-honda-650-engines-xr650l-nx650-fmx650-etc/#entry9346378
Haha yeah I have a NOX button on my handlebars it gives a wicked boost lolol. No Its a NOSS adapter, NOSS is the company that made the adapter to mate the air box to the aftermarket carb. Ch33rs BC
Hey. Did you ever felt on and off vibrations at high speed? Like from 110kph vibrates for 1s then it stops, then it starts again and so on? And if you accelerate to 120kph it does the same but at half a second intervals?
I built a xr650l with the nx650 gearing saddled in a 1983 xl600r frame , I wanted shorter seat height and a cush drive, I also have the 2007 crf 450r front 47mm usd showa forks ,I bead blasted everything frame ,swingarm, motor cases , and powdercoated cases smooth black, jug was cerakoted, brand new dg exhaust, I just finished it ,took me 4 months started last oct, I also did the 10.5.1 wiseco to compliment the the 5th I was told if I didnt do the high compression piston that it might not have enough to pull it so im curiuos since yours is still stock and you have mods and you are able to pull the 5th gear? also what type carb is your off a 650r?? size and year??, thanks. ps its still cold here in nh and im itchin to see how this goes compared to my 06 thats stock except for desmog and full fmf.
Lukas Eddy was going to say maybe not but it looks like an wide open air box with uni filter if that's the case he is putting far more air and gas after the carb tune in his engine than stock get more power but sacrifice miles before rebuild.
Hey guys just bought an 07 650l that is stock. The guy took off the air box lid, and removed the baffle . Guy did some other mod that required holes in the side plastic cover as well. He went back to stock jets he said, but its running like crap. I need to get this thing jetted properly to this open air box and open baffle!please help. Thanks in advance
That is a huge demand to make when you have access to wide band o2 sensor data but to tune an engine over the internet, well that's dam near impossible. Goodluck
Maybe, maybe not. Check your compression, valve clearances and if good then i wouldnt worry about it. Use a lazer thermometer and check if the temps are pretty equal
have these bikes changed at all in the last 15 years or so?? i'm getting close to selling my cruiser and looking to buy a dual sport.. .but I don't know which one to get!! anyone can recommend the xr650 or the KLR 650 ?
The Honda xr650l hasn't change much over the last 20 years. And is intended for heavy mods and most off road use but can also make a reliable street bike but I would recommend something with fi for a dependable street bike. The klr comes more as an adventure bike but can be on par with xr. And if you want to spend a little more you can buy the ktm 500exc which will have a shorter life and more expensive parts but will give it back in enjoyment.
The XR 650L has more suspension travel. Much better for dirt riding. If you plan to stay on the street or smooth dirt roads the KLR with 5" less suspension will work.
I bought a black clarkes tank and I painted the side covers with krylon fusion paint. You can get this paint at most hardward stores. It comes in a spray can and fuses itself to the plastic so it is very scratch resistant.
+Brandon Edwards never paint the plastics. it'll look ghetto in no time. i see these "masterpieces" in my shop all the time and just end up lookin like a 300 dollar craigslist special.
+thelaughingman79 the fusion paint really works well. Its not like the other cheap paint, this paint fuses itself and looks great even after 2 years. Very high scratch and crip resitance. I highly recommend it.
+MK116Alex yes its a Teraflex 140/80 Knobby that's DOT approved. I have to cut the little L bracket off the inside of the swingarm and remove the chain protector to fit this tire. Looks better without it. The tire is awesome and lasts quite a long time.
