Time to change all 3 oils on the 1978 Yamaha XS750S, and not a moment too soon. The Final Drive and Mid Gear oil were changed 3 years ago when I first started this project and have about 3600 miles on each. Let's just say the oil I chose didn't hold up like the original!!!
Oils and Filters Selected for this maintenance:
Oil Filter - K&N 146
Engine Oil - Spectro 20-W40
Mid Gear and Final Drive - Bel Ray Hypoid 80W90

The fill plugs on my final and mid drive were seized in there. It’s a common problem I’ve learned. I had to use a 6mm Allen on a 1/2” drive socket with my air impact gun and heat from heat gun. Was able to remove the mid drive fill plug but the final drive Allen stripped out. To remove it I used a slightly bigger torx bit hammered into the plug and used the air gun again to remove. Just ordered 2 new fill plugs and I’m going to use a couple nylon washers and was thinking maybe using some neverseize on them.

The first time I did this, I had to heat up the case around the plugs; it felt like they were going to break the aluminum!!!

As for the oil level. . if it burns some, fill it up 3/4 full and it will last longuer , , before topping it up..

Thanks for the video. Now that you have 3600 miles on the bike please share your thoughts on it’s highs and lows? What do you use it for mainly? I’m currently going through the brake system on my 78. So, I’ve yet to ride it. Your videos have helped a lot and I like that you’re a regular person doing the work.

Thanks Blaine! The bike took some work to get road worthy. The electrical systems can suffer greatly from corrosion, broken wires and the infamously brittle fuse box. Take your time checking through the system with a multimeter reading the resistance through each trace. Also, there are voltmeters that plug into a battery tender lead. This is a great way to make sure your charging system is healthy on each ride. The brakes are a bit of work to get operational, typically new pistons and a rebuild kit will get you going. The rear master cylinder wasn't too bad to rebuild, but the front didn't want to cooperate, so I bought an aftermarket which is working fine. Assume every rubber part will fail, the fork seals, tach seal, clutch pushrod seal, tires, intake boots will all fail, some you can wait to replace, others you should do before trying to ride it (intake boots) The bike has been great, I use it around town , plenty of 60-100 mile strips, long weekend rides from 200-600 miles. I love country roads with plenty of hills and curves, and the bike is perfectly happy in that environment. The torque is excellent, handling is as expected for a heavy 70's bike. I hope to get plenty more riding ahead! Let me know if you run into any issues.

How many miles is the new oil going to last? Or how often does it need to be changed? I totally neglected mine and had it running with NO oil at all, I had to use regular car oil to make it home. Thank god this engines are so strong. Great video btw

Thank you! I can get the engine oil every year or 3000 miles. The gear oils both looked pretty bad after 3 years, 5000 miles, so I think I’ll change those every 2 years now. Thanks for commenting and I’m glad you were able to get home safely!

Or the last oil change could have been with graphite oil. . it gets black like this fast.. as for the oil seal, try thick grease to maintain it in place. . About the oil seal, do not stretch it when manipulating it. . .

The 81 xs850 has this weird dipstick that’s hard to find, would these measurements work for it?
@pushrodfury6644
@pushrodfury6644 Месяц назад
@@Log9938 Yes, they will be the same. I’ve seen a few designs online to make your own. I made one out of a dowel and nail It’s super simple but works

I have this exact bike, just changed the oil filter and gasket. However when I rev the bike it blows out the O-ring and starts pouring oil. Any ideas?

This sounds bad! I’m curious if the spring and washer are I stalled under the filter?

Hey would every thing be the same for the xj and do you know if itd be the same measurements for a 1100 for the mid and final drive?
@pushrodfury6644
@pushrodfury6644 Месяц назад
@@DevonCarter-e5v I can only say these are the values for the XS750; I’d search for the shop manuals for those other bikes. There are probably FB groups that specialize in each model, and they usually have the manuals too. Good luck!

That's not a hypoid gear final drive. Plain bevel gear.
