Excellent video. I have been into ham since 1994 and just got into GMRS in 22. Got my first Motorolas within the last few months. I could figure out a fair amount but this really helped. Thanks!!
What a great video my man. You have no idea how long I have been looking for someone to finally make a great vid like this on CPS. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for this video. I recently bought an XPS 3000 Model II and have struggled to get the correct equipment combo. Windows 10 did not work for me so I ended up buying an old Dell micro laptop running XP, and RIB interface, which did the trick, but your video pointed out that direct serial could also be used, so I got that cable and it worked (much less complicated). The video programming section helped me understand how to set up Analog and Astro channels, zones and scan lists which is much appreciated! Great video, keep it up - Dave, KE0NA
I have programmed my xts3000 radios one time and I managed to flip flop the Tx and Rx freqs. This video is very informative for someone like me who is new to this software. Thanks.
Thanks for this great Vid. Getting into some P25, picked up a couple of these handhelds, one UHF one VHf, and this has made things much easier! Running a Panasonic CF-19 with windows 7 and hardware serial port, and it worked.
This is a great video. I have an XTS2500 UHF and a XTS5000 VHF and have used this video for some programming functions in conventional. I would love to see programming the XTS2500 and XTS5000. There aren't many differences but there are some.
Astro25 is tricky to learn. But once you learn where/what everything is, it's not bad. And you can run it on a modern computer that's 64 bit. Just run the program as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 3.
I have not found that to be the case with the xts3000. The other radios in the xts lineup (2500, 5000, etc) use astro 25 cps which does work in compatibility mode. xts3000 cps will run in compatibility mode but won't communicate with the radio for some reason
A video like that would be neat, but you can not program the trunking personalities without a system key file which you're not going to get legitimately. The issue is that if you had that file and if you programmed a 5000 for a trunking system, and if you inhibited ptt and disabled integrated data, the radio still would send in registration ISPs to the system via the control channel. The system administrators are not going to like seeing unknown IDs or duplicate IDs and they can take your Astro ID and brick your radio if you try to do that. The alternative would be to set up conventional personalities to scan the trunking voice channels assuming the system is FDMA only. That method isn't going to track talkgroup calls perfectly, but with a little hang time on the scan, it does a pretty good job and with tx disable it is totally legit to do with no interference to the system operation. It's completely passive listening.
The NAS method does work nut you must depending on firmware version ensure ALL relevant boxes need to be unchecked to prevent any data packets from trying to phone home. There is one version of firmware where it doesn't allow you to disable WUID I forget which version believe it was the final harris update for the xts so they'd run on Harris systems without issues. Not everyone was suppose to grt this update but idiots try to get it for no useful reason.
@@lifeisamatrix5960 If there is a checkbox in CPS that disables ISPs, I've never seen it. The Harris update you mention, is that the one for OBT systems?
Interesting vid. Have a question I got Motorola xts 3000 turns on shows programed channel..I know it's programed from where it came from but I can't get the program buttons to function
@@ATI556 ok what do I need to set up my own panel. I found a couple on ebay but need to know what parts I need and where I can I find the software to program it. If you have a way i could call to get that info it would help out alot
Hi. Great video. I get an error message when I go to upload to the radio. It says can't upload to radio without advanced system keys. How do I rectify that? Also the radio has a lot of trunk freqs in it that I don't need. How do I delete them? Thanks 73 Joe W2JJT
Great video, I'm fairly new to the hobby I've set everything as shown but cannot read / see in (Conventional) Others MDC ID) any step I'm missing? Thanks 73.
Awesome video!!! I do have a question... It wont let me name my zones.... as of right now i have 2 Zones im going to be adding more soon but it wont let me name my zones.. is it because i only have 2 zones or can you help me figure it out please? Thanks in advance
Cant you program the Switches A, B, and C to have completely different 16 channels from the other switches for a possible 48 max different channels on the radio? Because thats what I did to all the MTS 2000 Flashports that I have
You can set abc to be different zones. You can also just switch zones from the menu. The radios hold much more than 16 channels. And more than 3 zones. Can't remember offhand, but it's a lot
Folks if you're watching this video and do not already have a XTS 3000, DO NOT get one. Instead get a XTS 2500 or 5000, they are much better, and much easier to program
I liked your video the one thing I did not like is the connection of the cable that you were talking about and the configuring of the cable so that the software will work I have Adele as well and the connection is not being recognized you don't show updating the drivers for your Dell so it makes it hard to make my radio talk to my computer
Wow! Thanks for doing this video! I knew pretty much nothing when I got my xts3000 and know I programed it on my own. Best video outthere! Great job ! John
This program free? I got 4 of these from work and they just buzz anytime we try to use them. I was told they are encrypted and on a specific channel band.
What you where told is somewhat true, these radios are monoband which means they only use VHF, UHF 1, UHF 2 and 800. Encrtyption however can be turned off.
thanks so much for this video helped me get started programming my xts3000. if you ever feel like making another one of these about some of the other programming features I'm sure it would also be greatly appreciated. also I have been able to successfully program my radio with cps in a windows xp 32 bit virtual machine and an ftdi adapter cable. I don't think I would flash the firmware or flashcode with that setup but programming channels and everything seems to work fine.
Hello, I became the proud owner of xts3000, but I have a problem: cps cannot connect to the radio station. win xp, usb to com(rs232). first, the radio goes into 1 csq mode, and then the error "failed connection with radio" flies on the computer screen. What am I doing wrong and what should I do to make it work? thanks in advance
I have a Windows 10, 64 bit Dell, about 2 years old running the CPS without any issues and using the USB port to read and write. I also run APX software on the same computer using either blue tooth or cable, and again, without issues.
This is an amazing video!!! I thank you so very much. I have spent months trying to find a program that works. Then find a video that’ll help me understand. Then find an old WORKING laptop that would let me put all of this together!!! Absolutely great step by step video. I’m a computer guy, but needed a direction to go in. Thanks again.
I have a Dell laptop and I need to use the USB what type of cable are you using I have the same radio and been using the desk top but I wantvto use the laptop and the USB not working maybe I don't have the right cable for using the USB,,, Thanks you
I have the programming cable works fine on the desktop with the serial port but my laptop doesn't have a serial port what adapter do I need to use the USB
Fantastic....Exactly what I needed after buying two older radios. I bought the software and such But really needed an idea of how it would all play out. The last 10mins are very important stuff. many thanks
Can someone please help with RMN5038A for the XTS2500 Astro? PTT works fine, emergency button on radio is programmed properly. The RSM emergency button will not function. We finally got it to work but it is reverting to a random channel that we don’t want it to go to. We double checked the revert and thought we found the problem. We set the revert to the main channel and now it won’t work at all!? Any advice?
I was thinking about getting one of these (MOTOROLA XTS5000) to listen to my local Police. They use P25 no encryption. Is the CPS hard to find on the web? They use 800 Mhz
The software is called Astro25 CPS. What you're trying to do is called non-affiliate scan. You need to make damn sure you do it properly, or you'll run into big problems if the radio affiliates to the system. There's instructions for it online. Just make sure you do it 100% correctly.
I am able to use most of the principles shown here, however, I can't get past trying to write to the radio. It hangs up with the message: The radio Serial Number does not match. Under Radio Information S/N ----- can't enter anything. It doesn't allow me to change the s/n in the CPS. I have asked around and haven't gotten anything to help me.
Go to tools, cloning, clone radio. Change the serial number to match the serial number of your radio. (If you don't know it, read the radio and find it under radio information) Note however, if the flash code between what you intend to write, and the radio itself don't match, you can't write it. You'll need to export then import everything. There will be error to clear out. Can't help ya with that
Is there a way to disable the transmit function completely? I have a xts2500 and would like to only receive with it kinda like a scanner. But I’m also fairly new to this and just got the software.
Hey man, great video. Have you got a link for the cable you have? I think I might have cable probs. When I read the device, the radio beeps and shows 1 CSQ on the screen, then I get an error message of of the cps. Not sure if it is the cable.

@@ATI556 XTS5000, I bought it on eBay and it came with a codeplug password. I can’t figure out how to get around it. The seller was just a 3rd party company selling these for the original party. They were no help when I tried to get the password from them.
Hi and thanks for the video. I do have one question. I have a XTS-3000 Astro VHF Model 2 and I would like to know if it is possible to have 2 scan list programmed and how would you toggle them between 1 and 2.or A and B? OK forgot to add that my one scan list that I currently have consist of channels of different zones for public service and as of right now I have 6 zones total.. I want to do another scan list with ham , MURS and Marine and maybe a few P.S. frequencies as well Thanks in advance for your time and response back..
In the personality you can select which scan list they use. So for the other stuff, create a second scan list. (scan 2 for example) and under the scan tab in the personality section, make sure scan 2 is selected for all. This way when on one of the scan 2 channels, you just hit the scan button to toggle scanning and you can scan the second list. If you have channels you want on both lists, duplicate those channels and change what scan list you want on the duplicates. Radio holds enough channels for this
@@ATI556 sheriff surplus auction but it wasn't cheap paid $3000, although I did get a good flashcode.... do you know where I can find any Astro25 CPS R20.50.10 software to download I want to get my old xts up and running again.
@@johngotti123 20.50.10 is the latest Firmware, not CPS. You sure you don't need the firmware file? If you need CPS there is a video on programming the XTS5000 by a Mark. E. In the comments there is a link to the file you seek.
I also have a problem. I'm using a Windows 7 Panasonic Toughbook that has a serial port on it as well as the latest xts software / firmware to program my XTS Radios. The problem is every Time I go to read my radio (XTS 3000), I get a little box screen that says quote: "motorola cps open radio failed error context 24 status c000039e". How do I fix this issue? Please respond back to me asap. Thx
What version of CPS are you using? Sounds like you either have the wrong CPS or the wrong cable. XTS3000 programming cable and Astro Saber & XTS3000 CPS do not work for XTS5000. XTS5000 programming cable and Astro 25 Portable CPS do not work for XTS3000
Hi. I need a little help. When I have my radio on scan I would like to press the PTT and have it go to my own frequency or go to my priority frequency if that makes sense. I listen to the fire dept but when I want to talk to my guys I want to be able to press the PTT and talk when I’m done it should automatically go back to scanning. I have the CPS I just can’t figure it out can you or anyone tell me what to press or touch ? Please and Thank You
Great video, thank you. I need to transmit on a frequency that lies in the public safety band, so I need their band radio. I've heard that there's a setting in the software to block a signal from public safety agencies that can enter your radio and brick it. What is that setting?
