Most people are not award of what the foot is doing when stepping forward. On a regular walk, we step one foot forward, and lift the heel of the rear foot to advance forward. Consequently, most people when making one step to advance forward with a punch or whatever, they tend to lift the heel and rotate on the balls of the foot to re-root. This is when you become vulnerable to any resistance to your walk forward. Therefore, it is important that you leave the foot planted when you do the half step forward. For the full walk, the front foot's heel (which will become the rear foot) needs to be planted, and the front half of the foot rotates while the rear foot advances forward. The rear foot that becomes the front foot then lands and roots the heel to the ground, and letting the structure rotate the front half of the foot to 45 degrees of the CLP. In this video, Shawn swings his rear structure and leg to walk forward. This is not the correct way to do it. The wood block is making him do that. The wood block should only be used for the half step.
