Okay this is a bit of a random question, but since you seem to know a lot more about yokai than I do, do you mind telling me what (in your opinion) you think the most famous ones are? I am trying to make some characters based on yokai and I want to get the most popular ones down first before making other characters. Sorry if this is a lot to ask. I'm 13 btw. :)

Minamoto no Yoritomo and Minamoto no Yoshitsune were descendants of Yorimitsu, who is mentioned earlier in the video. (The fictional Genji in the Tale of Genji is a member of the same clan -- 源氏 [Genji] means "Minamoto [源] clan [氏]".) "Morimoto" (森本) is a completely separate name. Also, "Mie" wasn't a province of old Japan -- modern Mie Prefecture roughly corresponds to Ise Province.

As I just started the new instalment in the Monster Hunter series, I found this video very enlightening. The games in the franchise usually take inspirations from indigenous peoples and for the current one the devs have decided to go with a heavy focus on their own Japanese mythology. As I listened to this video, I found plenty of parallels that I wouldn't have noticed otherwise and made me see the game's world in another light. I have been following the channel for a while since I have an interest in history, especially early history. However I liked this video the most as it helped me appreciate one of my favorite franchises even more.

Interesting to hear the common pronunciation mistake I'm constantly guilty of here, being from Yorkshire: "Kami" being pronounced by Crofty as "Kame". The nice thing about Japanese is that the kana characters are totally phonetic, eliminating a lot of ambiguity in pronunciation... but old habits die hard

here's a handy, super easy cheat sheet for anyone who's ever been unsure how to pronounce a japanese word: just remember that the vowels pretty much always sound the same, no matter what. so if you can pronounce "samurai", "sushi" and "nintendo", you can pretty much pronounce every single japanese word. a is always "ah", o is always "oh", u is always "ooh", i is always "ee", e is always "eh". there are really only those five ways to say them. so when the vowel is elongated without an apostrophe, just pretend you're saying it for slightly longer, like it's accented. and if there is an apostrophe, just pretend you're saying the vowel twice in a row. "o'o" is "oh-oh". no hard stop, just say it twice. otherwise, just make a short vowel sound ad you'll probably have it right. japanese as a language is far less arbitrary than english. the rules are the rules. and now you know them. kinda. close enough. even accents aren't hard to learn. of course, r's and f's and such are a little different than they are in english and may take some practice, but for most things if you just speak the words in the front of your mouth, like you do when putting on a spanish accent, you'll be pretty dang close.

This is fascinating to me as a devotee of "The Monstergirl Encyclopedia" series by one Kenkou Cross, and the numerous amateur prose works based on it. Leaving aside the silliness of the franchise (it's erotica, ranging in tone from horror to goofy to romantic depending on author), it's very interesting to see how Cross has adapted this body of mythology into his own world.

hengeyokai are changeling creatures. from the verb henkan sure = to transform to change form. the famous Kitsune yokai is a good example as they often took the appearance of humans, often women and also sometimes having only 1 leg.....differences between Yokai, Yure, Majin, bakemono, mamono and Oni are thin for a westerner and hard to differentiate. Oni were actually not demons but a clan of mage ogres who lost to the demon clan and got "incorporated" under the Majin class (demons) I hinge everything g I can find on yokai and the spiritual creature of Japanese lore, so thank you for that lengthy video full of new knowledge!
