It's hard to understand how funny Richard was after decades of comedians who followed his lead. It's like folks who find the Beatles overrated after hearing a thousand bands who were influenced by them. Whoever favorite comedians are (Patrice, Burr, Rock, Eddie, Martin, etc) their favorite comedian was no doubt Richard Pryor. He created the format in which comedians actually talk to the audience about real life experiences rather than just telling "take my wife, please" jokes. All performance art should be looked at in the perspective of chronological order.
You have to go all the way back to the early 70's to really understand how funny Richard Pryor was as a comedian. His best work was in the 1970's. The 1980's was a horrible time for Richard Pryor after he set himself on fire freebasing cocaine in 1980. I hope you get a chance to check out one of his funniest movies "Which Way Is Up?'
You have to think, Richard Pryor didn't have much that others had to go off it. It may sound "regular" because he did it first. He created the wave for black comedians, so gotta think back then, all of this was new lol. He was the blueprint for modern black comedians basically
I was just about to mention that movie. Richard Pryor's comedy is relatable to a past generation. Pryor makes light about the problems in America GEN. X,Y,Z knew nothing about. Today you can only make so many jokes about a kid with a cellphone appendage.
You said you watched High School Musical growing up, so it doesn't surprise me you don't get Richard Pryor humor 😂. Nah... he's funny, you just a 2000s baby.
Who you think is funny , thought he was the greatest to do it. You should hear his comedy albums . But whoever you think is the GOAT, probably will declare that title to Richard Pryor.
Ay I feel ya (unpopular opinion) I feel like Richard Pryor type humor is kinda outdated, still has its funny moments but not all through out with jokes people have done numerous or better times, he was just a man of his time which I respect 🤷🏾♂️
Hey, Jayshara. To each its own. To what's funny or not. Richard Pryor is definitely the goat to black comedy. A lot of comedians today was inspired by him. I think RP was known for his skits like: 1. The first black president 2. Reverend James I White 3 Space bar star wars. You might be interested in some of his stand up gigs like: 1 police brutality 2. Mudbone to me it's funny. Check it out u might like it.
Stop taking suggestions from just anybody and go with the majority....... and besides it's hilarious to those who understands the joke can relate to the joke, just like people react to what they relate to because of the particular comedian that is on stage is saying subject matter And because it's not funny are hilarious to one, doesn't mean the same for the other....✌️.........
Lol, why are certain people upset because she doesn’t think that the clips she watched are funny, music, comedy and other things are subjective. It’s her opinion, I’m sure some of your favorite comedians people don’t think are funny and some of the music you like people don’t like, once again it’s her opinion and she has that right.
I know the title prolly is not really a question you want answers to, but I'll give one anyway. Simply put, sometimes. As a non-American with no experiences of friction or segregation with other races growing up, his stand up is not only hard to hear at times, but very hard to understand/relate to With that context, I always loved him more as a comedic actor, but was not a big fan of his stand up, while most others seem to be of the exact opposite opinion. At the time (and still do) loved George Carlin's stand up far better, since it was far more universally relatable and I never had any problems understanding what he was saying (even as a non-native speaker) Not to mention, I personally don't think his material aged that well when (again) compared to Carlin, and seems even harder to relate to these days than before Bernie Mac is an even more extreme example of the same thing, I loved him in some of the movies I saw him in, but I could barely make out any words from his stand up performances 😢 Now after that rant, back to actually watching your reaction 😂
I don’t watch much standup comedy at all. I get bored watching jokes for hours. I did watch Def Comedy Jam though. But I have never seen this show. I will say that I thought Richard Pryor had some funny lines in the movies he was in. I’m sure he improvised them in his scripts. He made me laugh.
His Album "That Nigga is Crazy". Pryor's "WHICH WAY IS UP" "SILVER STREAK" "STIR CRAZY" "BREWSTER'S MILLIONS". We understand that your generation is not gonna see historic situations funny because you guys don't interact with each other as much.
I think Richard Pryor was cutting edge for his time.I guess you have to be more into the technical/fundamental aspects of stand up to fully appreciate him. He's every comedians favorite comedian for some reason.Personally, i'd rather watch Bernie Mac, or Dave Chappelle.
Agree. He’s a legend and opened doors, but I don’t think he’s funny, either. It’s a matter of taste and opinion. I’ve ne er understood how people can get angry at other people not liking what they like.
Back in the day they was the mafia and they would Italian everything he said was just like that and they was the first to do drive-bys are there cars I know this because I was born in the fifties
If you deep diving the legends it will take more than a 5 or 10 minute random clip with no context whatsoever. Comedy is an artform especially Standup Comedy with various styles going back to the silent films of the 1920s. If you are serious about STUDYING THE GAME that will require proper education from the legends and greats. If not just do comedians from the 90s and just stay away from the original OG Groundbreaking legends.
Comedy is also personal and relatable. Not this skit was funny ass hell. But I also knew some, hmmm ppl in this world back in the day. And thou slightly exaggerated, it was spot on on the ppl I knew in those days. So it made it a funny bit. I'm also of an other generation. And it a world that you might not know. Witch is good for you not being familiar with the under world.
There are so many that are funnier than this, although I thought this was funny. There is one called the wineo and the junkie. Another that I haven't seen on YT is when he talked about going hunt with his dad or being out in nature and seeing a dear. To be honest you can't always watch a 5-10 min clip and get the fullest of Richard Pryor. Like ever other comedian, some joke have you bent over with laughter, some have you smiling and some leave you straight faced. Bruce Bruce and Laveil Crawford keeps me laughing because they are spontaneous i have sat though what suppose to be funny comedians and never craxked a smile but I don't say there not funny, . I watch another reaction video of Paul Mooney, i smiled a time or 2 but it wasn't really funny but, you thought it was. I see at the end you like dry humor, then RP isn't fir you.
