I replaced the arms on the 62... but not for GVM upgrade... This is my rant on why. Warning. *may contain traces of bad language *poor camera work *even worse commentary *worse still editing insta @chris_richards_oz_patrol
You are definitely on to something with the lift and different angle contributing to your problem. Plus the shock load of the bags. I may have to review my setup now
@@OzPatrol66 I can tell you I have. Interested to know where you got the the upgraded arms / billets I’m in Belize. All parts have to be special ordered - 4 to 6 week wait at best. Had a joint break off just this week. And you guessed it. Off the passenger side (right) rear wheel.
Love your vids. Lower control arms on a tank like this you would think no worries .. Even my car i looked at them and always surprised how manufacturers take short cuts just a bit of plating here etc but I suppose its all about costs… those new arms look awesome👍
We’ve had 1 case of the same issue over here in the USA (only 1 since very few people here use the Y62 offroad). Guy runs 37” tires and was flying like 100kmh down miles of dirt roads when the LCA broke. He ended up buying 4 new arms and cutting 2 in half longways and welding them to the outside of the others to basically make them twice as thick. But based on your first failure, sounds like they could use some additional reinforcement around the bolt holes. 3600AUD is super expensive but kudos to Dash for creating a bullet proof solution. Thanks for the video and info!
Yeah agree, as I keep reminding myself, mu gu has broken front arms rear arms, rear upper arms torn rear upper from chassis, upper coil towers, lol. Over a few years though. Definitely the weakness in a y62 I've since torn the k frame
A year out of date i know but I've bent one in Tassie doing Belfour's track. I've put it down to weight as well i have a very small lift but a lot of weight with rear bar and long range tank. Similar to you i hit something in a water coarse cam bent the arm out like yours. I held off buying the arms when they were 3k wish I'd done it now they're like $4500. I've got a couple of spares I've laminated some extra plates onto to hopefully future proof until a better option comes out
Yeah, I've since torn one of the arms brackets off the k frame also, not ideal. Every car has its weak points eh. Balfour track, that's a weird one eh, I was down there in janurary
THanks for the info, i just brought a 2019 TIL and tow a van so need to beef up the rear end and in WA you struggle to get a GVM/GCN upgrade, as a starting pont do you recommend upgrade of rear springs with air bags
@Robert Ogs they push out on the springs rather than up to stiffen spring i think so i pump them up then load the car up. I did purchase. Mine for my 2 inch lift but i think the bags are the same for stock.
Last september we did the cape with a 2.5t trailer. I got a 2019TI on a 2" lift and air bags. Done a lot of K's off road. I havent bent an arm yet. Luck of the draw i guess. But now im lookin at the alloy arms
Yeah, I might have an unlucky hit, my truck is also 3.6 t which probably doesn't help, big heavy rear bar, it's hard to keep them protected and light eh
This is really interesting. Two bent lca’s with very different mechanisms of failure there really. One a bump at speed and one more torsion kind of thing. I would’ve thought the second arm would’ve bent heading uphill not downhill too given there would be more weight on the arm with the front end up. Thanks for sharing mate. Just wondering as well, is your rear setup load distributed fairly evenly? Strange to do both on the right and though maybe the right was heavier or something? 👍
@@OzPatrol66 the right side seems to be the weakest for some reason. Thanks for posting this. I have a stock Y62 and I’m inclined to get the upgraded arms instead of waiting for the ones from Nissan that will take weeks to get then be a problem again a little down the road.
5:30 it may have but 5psi is lowest they recommend so I don't think it would have much different, tbh if you were sitting at 3400 kg i would have inflated to 15-20psi depend how much it sagged on rear
Yeah, maybe, i spoke to the bloke that does a lot of work on these y62s and that was his opinion as i run 200kg springs in the back which handles my normal travelling weight, so the bags are installed mainly for when the caravan is in tow, helps.with the extra 250kg ball weight.
Mmm, I did it basically as tight as I could with 2 spanners linked or big breaker bar, 600mm. I have the inner ones move the adjustment so I keep them as tight as I can, Andrew cassar would have the actual torque setting, on track 4wd.
Is there any other reported case of rear bent control arm in the bush mate? I take my Y62S5 to bush regularly with my 4wd club, work mates and my son. Just curious. I'm going in for Ontrack gvm upgrade anyway due to long range fuel tank.
Hi I was watching about the y62 with bent lower control arm and Big Oz explorers had the same problem with their Y62 on cape York as well Might be worth checking out Chris and Sian and their cape York adventure
Mmm,, cant be sure by i am of the opinion that the spring angle from lift is part of the issue. I would upgrade mine even at stock height i reckon. It seems to be the weak point.
Seems like they are weak. The design is difficult to make strong. They did it like this to make the suspension as compact as possible to keep the rear cargo floor as low as possible. Pajero's dont have this problem, you can push them much harder than you do and no problems. The pajero coil sits on top of the arm not inside it. As you say the billet ones are heavy, thats ultimately the consequence of the desire to have a low cargo floor height. The pajero arms are surprisingly light yet strong. And the pajero cargo floor is low so mitsubishi got that all good and then nissan didnt copy it.
Funny you say that, another 62 out with us a few weeks back bent an arm also, 2 inch springs, no airbags, just hooked on a rock. First one ive seen bent since this vid.
Yeah, I reckon they could be stronger, but I also break gu patrol arms, cruiser steering boxes and heaps of other stuff that shouldn't break, they definitely the weak spot
Not very strong not a great design just watching u move them on the floor they sound very tinny. I think Nissan should have stuck with solid rear axil .they are a nice truck .
@@OzPatrol66 they bend but not that easy .iv had to tower brace an laminate houseings but was carrying almost a ton of mud crabs on the back an the roads we went were similar as the ones in your video iv known of a few peaple bending the irs in the new y62 like yours there not built tough ..nice trucks but
@@outbacknomad9939 ahh ok, one of the gu's with us on the cape trip bent his coil towers the same day, he reckons in the same dip. The video didnt show how visious the dip was. But he was quite heavy. Ive bent rear trailing arms in most of my gq gus, i think thats pretty standard if you go full on offroad. But y62 ones def crap.
